Walman gives the puck away in higher-leverage situations than someone like Ferraro or Ceci. When Ferraro and Ceci give the puck away it's usually because they went glass-and-out or flipped the puck into the neutral zone or worst case rimmed it around the boards to an opposing defenseman. In all these situations the Sharks are typically in good defensive position so the resulting scoring chances are unlikely to be grade-A.

Walman's giveaways are far more often the result of him trying to skate through the opposing team or taking a stupid risk at the offensive blueline or just inexplicably turning it over in the dzone against minimal pressure. I fundamentally disagree that Walman's occasional good breakout passes or power play production outweighs his liabilities unless you can carve out a specialized offensive role for him on a blueline with 5 other guys who can actually defend. He has also been flat out horrible since returning from his injury, just like he was all of last season in Detroit, so it's hard not to come to the conclusion that the first 20 games this year were a fluke.

Yes, Walman's first 20 games this season, where he literally played like a legitimate #1D, were a fluke, and he has regressed to what he is: a solid #4D, which is all anyone is claiming he is.

In the end, getting just a late 1st for Walman feels pretty underwhelming considering the prices worse players have gone for at this deadline. Our D is back to being bottom-pairing guys, journeymen, and AHLers, and we have to now go shopping for four (4) new top-4 defensemen this offseason. Tall task if you ask me.

I know there's more context than this, but it's strange people are papering over this very real reality because Walman was better than Thrun or whatever.

I dont think anyone is unhappy with this trade, but we should all be f***ing ecstatic right now. I think EDM fans are going to hate him come playoff time.

Why? he rose to the occasion for long enough to gain interest from a contender. Months earlier a team paid to get rid of him. Sounds like he did his part in rehabbing his image; nothing to offer sympathy for

There's two sides to carrying the load for a team like this in that he received offensive opportunities and leeway that no other team in the league would have given him.

To a large extent I don't care what his stats look like this year. He's 29 years old, was drafted 12 years ago and just hit 200 career NHL games this season. Can we stop ignoring his long history of failure before coming to the Sharks?

My guess is that Grier "chose" between Ferraro and Walman. Right now, Ferraro, Desharnais, Mukhamadullin, Liljegren, Thrun, Vlasic, and Thompson are your 7 presumptive defensemen, at least pre-draft.

Then come the hypotheticals. Will they draft Schaefer (the broadcast hinted that the Sharks are targeting him)? Can they put together the assets for a premium young defenseman via trade? Or, can they take some cap dumps for the third season in a row? Who will they sign in free agency? How do the prospects (Cagnoni, Dickinson, etc.) look during TC and preseason?

While this would not be my choice (I'd still dump both - neither is a good player), I think this is correct. He knew he had a logjam of LHD down the road and traded one. Whether he traded Walman because he liked Ferraro more or because Walman would bring more in return we don't know.

This is a 29 year old player who has - being generous here - maybe 100 games of resembling a NHLer across his entire career to date. Nobody has any idea what he'll look like next season.
