JBD in a yr where he was in & out of the lineup led the team in blocked shots. What is one of their priorities leading into next season? Reducing their goals against. Having a guy who can blocks shots leads to less chances against which leads to less goals against.

I view JBD as at some point probably after Jensens's contract is up replacing him in the top 4 until Yakemchuk is NHL & top 4 ready, and/or being a permanent 3rd pairing with Kleven as a shutdown tandem. He is just starting to enter his prime & improve as the team is improving at the same time. In fact, a number of these young guys are all starting to enter into a time where everything starts coming together for them.

JBD played 72 games last year.

And started the season in Belleville where he played 2 games so he basically played every game when he was in Ottawa

He makes good reads defensively, but he has to get stronger and heavier to play the role that is suited to his play style effectively. If he was 2 inches taller and 20 pounds heavier he would be a good complimentary top 4 d man. He should suffice in a bottom pairing role he has good defensive hockey sense. One of the few D men that makes forwards make a decision at the blue line which is by far this teams biggest issue from their D men. I really think him and Kleven can be a fine third pair they just need reps.

JBD is looking like a full time NHL’er. Even if he is what he is as a RD bottom pairing guy who can fill in up the lineup with injuries for a few games that’s perfect.

You really have to hand it to JBD....


He's not blessed with any standout individual skill. He's not fast, his shot is meh, his mitts are below average, even his hockey IQ is just ok.

And yet here he is.

A meat and potatoes NHLer pulling his own weight. Here by the strength of his own will.

JBD's bread and butter was IQ and he has now a more mature frame and greater strength, he's become what we have hoped him to be.

If, as the seasons go by, he develops his first steps he'll be a great top 4 option as well. Only 24, hard to believe.

I hope they've got Zub mentoring him because that's where he should be directing his game.

Both Zub and Jensen play a similar game to what JBD can aspire to. I'd like to see him be a bit more physical, he's not a big strong guy so maybe it has to be with some hacks and whacks,

Yeah Jensen would be good too and maybe a bit closer comparable to JBD's current game.

I think he needs to demonstrate this year that he can be completely trustworthy on an NHL roster and can handle the front of his net. If he does that then he can start working on confidence with the puck and growing his game into a bit more of the two-way style that he played at lower leagues.

Maybe get into the conversation as a legit middle pairing dman.

He seems committed to getting there.

JBD hasn’t played too bad in his limited starts. He is only getting paid $805k. If we could replace him with someone better that is only paid $800k, then OK. But, that might be more difficult than it looks. I’m kind of on the fence, but willing or tempted to see if he can keep improving. He’s a RFA next year.

Well, yes I was talking about now and the bulk of this regular season.

How much cap space we’ll have next year is highly variable as there’s going to a lot of moving parts (RFA’s to sign, players whose 1 year contracts will expire, etc.). There’s another thread for next year’s cap space, so probably worth a visit. I’m not sure where you would insert Fabbro, but if you’re thinking 3rd pair, I doubt there would be enough cap space for Fabbro at $3.5 m. I’ll guess we’ll have about $2.75 m for the entire 3rd pair (i.e., Kleven/Yakemchuk).
