Great point. He, like a handful of other young star players, has taken a massive step forward this year on both ends of the ice. He just flat out dominates. You can see why many people feel he may be the best young centre (excluding McDavid obviously), and its not out of the realm of possibility.
And he only makes $10 million for a full 8 year contract. Other young players make substantially more, for far less term. Eichel is amazing and on a great contract. Buffalo is lucky to have him

Sabre fans have had only one complaint on Eichel his entire career. And that was that he passed up way too many prime shots to try and feed inferior players who would inevitably flub set ups that should have been guaranteed goals.
He has heeded that advice. Career high of 28 goals prior to this season. At 22 in 33 and on pace for over 54 goals. Eichel has always had an elite wrist shot. Now he is using it. He still has untapped potential. 80-85 points was not his ceiling. He has shown he can be a 50-60-110 or 40-70-110 type player. The Sabres are averaging over 3 gpg and they only have 4 players with more then 5 goals. Hopefully Botterill adds another bonafide top 6 forward this year.

maybe he's trying to make them look bad intentionally, like it's all a performance art piece that he'll reveal at the MoMA in 2035, in the twilight of his career, his final achievement as an NHL great. Sounds beautiful to me
Two goals tonight, but the d-zone play where he saves the GA and then the soundbite as they're skating off the ice and he turns to Ullmark to quietly tell Linus that Linus is the player of the game? Favorite parts of the night.

Technically speaking if he keeps this up he would be the best player in the league. Ofc I don't expect any of them to keep this up.

Eichel: 14G, 13A, 27p +18
McDavid: 9G, 18A, 27p -4
MacKinnon:10G, 16A, 26p +10
I’ve refrained from “how do you like me now” type posts in here Despite being told for years by people who haven’t watched him play longer then ten minutes how overrated, overpaid he is. But I do wonder where those posters are who said just two weeks ago “don’t make a mountain out of a scoring ottAwamolehill.” When he scored four goals, or the next game when buffalo beat jersey 7-2 and another guy wrote “if only he could play Domingue and OtTawa every night” I mean is it just me or are those posts and posters no where to be found in here? It’s curious.
So let me see he’s first in even strength goals, offensive zone possession, end to end rushes, second in overall goals, fifth in points, and has averaged 2 points a game (and a goal a game) for the past month while playing on a mediocre team at best with a horrid powerplay? Just checking.

Not to sound arrogant but He already is IMO...not just because I want him to be but because....
He’s basically had as good of a season and he’s also had a better start to his career. Better points per game and his worst season is better then half of mackinonns seasons. And he missed a lot of time too.
Mackinnon had two seasons of incredible totals that has put him ahead of course, but also has the better linemates and last year (one of those two years he finished with high totals) finished with just 8 more points then eichels 82 game pace. 82 in 77 = 89 in 82. To be fair Mackinnon did put up 97 in something like 74 but he’s ahead of Eichel for a reason. I think he could challenge him already, the numbers career wise and this year just aren’t that different especially when you consider eichels production when in comparison to his linemates with Mackinnon, where Rantanen has unreal totals too and Mack did start producing like a stud when Rantanen came. Mack has proved though that he’s improved completely As a player too as one can just look at his dominance this year without Rantanen as an example.
This was actually said on the national broadcast after his first NHL game. That’s how’s they compared his skating style/offensive dominance too from the jump.
Of course I’m biased and everything but he’s really been my doing this his whole career but who wants to watch a bad buffalo team? I’m not saying he’s played this good but he’s been known to skate circles around teams put up around ten shots a night, set up a few glorious scoring chances and still finish the night with no points. His environment and injuries early on have really held him back from being something Really special from the beginning. But hey I mean he’s still only 23 and the big change in his game came last year (defensive responsibility, leadership) which was right when he became captain it seems that changed the guy completely. He’s just been more consistent with that this year, the captaincy made him way more accountable, even his post season interviews sounded different and mature compared to the early ones. When I say post season I mean after the season not playoffs obviously LOL.
Of course that’s not being all true, his attitude has come along way. He was pretty entitled, immature in the beginning. But because of how bad buffalo was that narrative or stigma followed him and got blown up. Especially after the double firing of bylsma and Murray.

Petterson is not better then Jack Eichel. Luckily I live in BC so I get to watch both guys, but yeah. He’s not. At all. And I don’t think draisaitl is either but his totals ...you can make an argument. Panarin is amazing too but he’s a winger and isn’t as valuable. I don’t know if anyone would take carlsson over Eichel too. Or even Kane right now over Eichel to start a team even though Kane is still the best American of the modern era and one of the best of all time.

Not all that close at the moment. Matthews doesn't impact the game the way Jack does. Eichel's zone entries and playmaking skills are a level above Matthews. Jack is starting to use his huge frame to maintain possession as well, and the defensive side of the game is really coming along. Matthews may have another level to his game, tho.
Michel is Top 10 maybe Top 5 to START a team, but judging by play last 2-3 years I'd rate 11-20:
