Jack Eichel is quietly becoming a top-5 player in the league

Eichel is still below Mackinnon this season in terms of production while having 4% higher OiSH. Do you expect him to be able to keep such OiSH advantage going forward?

Yes. If Olofsson stays on his line, you have two elite shooters on one line. So yeah, OiSH% will be high.

Who dares me to make an Eichel vs Matthews thread?
That would not be close right now. Jack has put himself into the conversation of Hart trophy consideration. 15 pt game streak shows consistency. He has taken a step fwd into a good Captain. On and off the ice, he has been a franchise player. Where would the Sabres be without him? Truly a great player, and really I could not be more happy for him. Considering he was not gifted with good teams and talent in his early years. That seems to be turning around now.

One was closed yesterday becasue of lopsided results.

Sabre fans have had only one complaint on Eichel his entire career. And that was that he passed up way too many prime shots to try and feed inferior players who would inevitably flub set ups that should have been guaranteed goals.

He has heeded that advice. Career high of 28 goals prior to this season. At 22 in 33 and on pace for over 54 goals. Eichel has always had an elite wrist shot. Now he is using it. He still has untapped potential. 80-85 points was not his ceiling. He has shown he can be a 50-60-110 or 40-70-110 type player. The Sabres are averaging over 3 gpg and they only have 4 players with more then 5 goals. Hopefully Botterill adds another bonafide top 6 forward this year.

Olofsson-Eichel-Reinhart
Skinner-Cozens- XX
XX - Mittelstadt - Thompson

By 21-22 that looks to be a great top 9 to me.
My second complaint (altough I'm not a Sabre fan) was that he slowed down the game too much, instead of using his speed. This has also been amended, so one can only assume he reads these boards. I just hope he remembers I was one of the first, and only ones, to predict him taking an Art one day.

its not really a hot streak when it is 20% of the season.
For example 9 out 10 is 90%. Well, 90%>>>>20%, but still does not prove anything.
Generally accepted minimum sample size is 100. For NHL hockey it usually reduced to 82. It's certainly not 15.

Do you have a point you're trying to make?

1) This thread was started on Nov. 29th, so 7 or 8 games into this "streak" by my count. It's less commentary on the points he's putting up and more about just how dominant he looks.
2) The title literally says "becoming top-10", not "has been top 10 over the past 100 games." If you watch him play, do you think there are 10 guys who impact the game more right now? Is there any reason to think Eichel will fall off a cliff and stop dominating shifts the way he's been doing this season?

Like I get your point, he's on an extended heater that isn't necessarily indicative of where his play will average out- but at the same time I'm watching every game, and every night there isn't a single player on either side of the puck outperforming him. So you can argue sample size, but when a dude is the best player on the ice 15+ games in a row I think you're kinda caught up in semantics instead of focusing on how damn good the player is proving to be. Makar has a small sample size, yet I feel pretty comfortable saying he'll be a top 5 D-man for years to come.

I dont have any point on the topic. I notice the incorrect statement of "15 games" and "consistency" in the same sentence. I pointed out that 15 games is not a definition of consistency. It's a definition of hot-streak. I could not care less about the discussed player. Show me the same mistake about any other player and I will write the same message there.

He's just as good in the offensive end as the defensive end. He's the total package, never would of thought he would get to the level he's playing at this year. Such a treat to watch, can single handily take over an entire game. The Sabres haven't had a player like this since GP.

Decent list

Petterson is not better then Jack Eichel. Luckily I live in BC so I get to watch both guys, but yeah. He’s not. At all. And I don’t think draisaitl is either but his totals ...you can make an argument. Panarin is amazing too but he’s a winger and isn’t as valuable. I don’t know if anyone would take carlsson over Eichel too. Or even Kane right now over Eichel to start a team even though Kane is still the best American of the modern era and one of the best of all time.

I'd also take Eichel over Petterson or Panarin.

Not all that close at the moment. Matthews doesn't impact the game the way Jack does. Eichel's zone entries and playmaking skills are a level above Matthews. Jack is starting to use his huge frame to maintain possession as well, and the defensive side of the game is really coming along. Matthews may have another level to his game, tho.

Oh Matthews definitely has another level to his game. He was better in his 2nd season and early last season than he is now by a fair bit. You can't argue with the numbers Eichel is putting up now though, even if he was piss poor defensively.
