People say it's just entertainment, but for a lot of Americans pop-culture and entertainment is their ONLY source of historical information. Entertainers should have some responsibility to be historically accurate, but they clearly don't.

So yeah, I heard the Redcoats were some hockey team out of Canada.

Commentators work for the NHL?

I thought they were hired by broadcasting companies, in this case specifically regional broadcasts.

So these guys communicating with regional fans. Fans of a specific team, but people feel they shouldn’t be biased? Lol. They’re not officials. They’re not league brass.

I think many people are confused on what the role of commentators are, who employs them, and who they answer to.

NESN is jointly owned by Fenway Sports (Red Sox - 80%) and Delaware North (Bruins - 20%)

So yes, Jack Edwards is an employee of the Boston Bruins albeit indirectly.

Yeah ok, if your want your team to hire a homer to inflate your teams tires, wax their cars, and tell them they are indeed gods, sure w/e, have at'er.

BUT, when you're accepting applications for homers, please, oh pretty please, have them be able to pass a basic history course if they are going to start equating their teams successes to historic moments.

An NHL announcer told his audience that this was a viable option... insane. And of course what happened after the game? A sea of fans took to Twitter saying the refs screwed up and should’ve done what Edwards said, totally believing this was an actual thing that could happen in the NHL.


Say what you will about his bias and his chirps at players, but when he blatantly presents objectively impossible things to his audience as an actual possibility, ooof. Might as well tell your fans that the refs might go back after the game and realize your team totally should’ve won and are going to change that 3-1 loss into a 5-3 win because that post you hit twice in the 2nd period really changed everything and the game was kinda bullshit when you think about it...

This is the problem here other than him being a giant ass hat.

He has the ability to influence public opinion. Even though it’s just ‘sports’ he’s been tasked with calling the game based on reality and the facts in front of him. There needs to be a basic level of objectivity in order to educate the viewer. That’s part of the job. Not to just spew deranged fairy tales and act like a complete asshole.

I’m just going to leave this here. Besides meeting Bobby Orr when I was a kid, I have never met a nicer person involved with sports than Jack Edwards. He’s nice to everyone and really wants to talk to people and will take criticism and readily admit if he’s wrong about something. I could name people who I’ve met who seemed like real jerks but Jack isn’t one of them. That doesn’t mean he’s the best announcer because he’s not but he’s also very far from the worst. He just annoys people including more than a few Bruins fans.
