How can an 8-year extension and trade bring you less than what you'd get at the TDL?? Come on a guys...
It is a bit counterintuitive, but not every team has cap space for an expensive 8 year contract. Although there is probably some overlap, "rental teams" and teams with the cap space for long term commitment are different groups. A rental team looking to win now can package a lot of assets. A team that's rebuilding places a lot more value on prospects and draft picks. These seem to cancel each other out.

EDIT: I mean anyone touching that Huberdeau contract??

Teams have until 5pm EST December 1st to sign RFA players for them to be eligible for the season. So the Dubois saga could last that long....

Lets hope not.
I dont think it will, the offer sheet thing is real and a team on his list could offer him $6.5M (which would be a 1st and 3rd as compensation) or <$8.5M (a 1st, 2nd and 3rd) and force Winnipegs hand. If they accept it they walk Dubois right to free agency.

We're thinking Habs, but think about it for a team like the Avs, Kings, Canes, Hell even the panthers (who now have cap space) getting a 2nd line center for even a season at the cost of a 1st, 2nd and 3rd or 1st and 3rd is great value when compared to prices at the deadline.

He'll be gone by the latest the day before offer sheets are available, winnipegs starting point in negotiations is likely that and building because that's what they'd get in an offersheet.

I read a report yesterday that the Jets will be be going to arbitration with Dubois. So, it appears that there will be a trade from now till draft or before July 1st.

I don't get why so much time and energy is focused on PLD. If so many are willing to pay the bucks he will get,why not add a bit more and go for the big fish than the little one, talking McD of course.

Mcdavid? He's going to cost a million times more...

Nothing. Nothing at all. Another day of 10-15 pages of PLD lol
Daily PLD dose — as we’re approaching draft day, will PLD be in Nashville? Will he rent a loge for his family and friends like did last year at the Bell Centre for the draft? Will it have champagne and balloon bouquets?

PLD is one of those very rare top 6 guys in his prime years who has a manifest interest in playing for Montreal. I can’t recall the last time that happened.

If I had my druthers, I’d much rather that they sign him as a UFA and not expend assets to acquire him but he’s forced Peg’s hand into trading now, so don’t know how amenable Hughes might be.

If Sebastian Aho became a UFA next season, that’s who I’d target.

If, and it's a big if, the Habs could move up and get Fantilli, I'd rather go that route than the Dubois route. It would be cheaper in cost and salary. Winnipeg will want too much and 9 million for Dubois is a bit much.
Why does it have to be either or? Why not both? Someone posted Habs need 3-more top-6 players, well if Fantilli & PLD are added that makes the need 1-more add

PLD let it publicly be know his desire, but was McD not hab fan growing up? He's the cream of the crop and might relish getting out of his current situation the way they mange the team.

Really gem, isn't it? Ever since the whole "list of teams" comment got out, Jet fans suddenly went from Florida's 1st to thinking they'll get the likes of Byfield or both our firsts and a prospect. I get they wanna hold onto anything to make it look better but come on.

Right now the "reasonable" offer is:

Barron
Kidney
Dvorak
1st (Florida)

:biglaugh:

If I'm the Jets, I take the best offer and let another team deal with PLD's nonsense. He's probably worth more as a one year rental who walks to us next season than anything we'll reasonably give up.

I proposed that offer actually as the most I would do assuming other teams are also bidding to get PLD.

And Jets fans responded with that would be okay and I might do that. Like that's on the low end of acceptable.

The guy is demanding out...

Has there been ANYONE, even the most biased Habs fan that have said, PLD would make us an instant contender? That’s just vitriolic nonsense. You can dislike the player for whatever reasons, his attitude etc, his potential contract but you can’t create a false narrative to hand out self high fives.

PLD gives us three major things:

A Big shutdown center that can play on the edge, in the prime of his career. Size in your lineup matters, especially at center in the playoffs.

A two headed monster at center. Finally Suzuki gets some help down the middle. He’s been a lone warrior out there for a long time. Adding PLD gives Suzuki better matchups, which should only increase his production.

A genuine Francophone star in his prime, who wants to be here. That counts for a lot. Even now. The last one we had was Stephane Richer, (sorry Damphousse) and most of the Xbox crowd have no idea who either guys were.

Considering I'm prbly one of the biggest PLD fans on the board and have wanted him since his draft year. I'm going to go with you are correct and that noone has said that. Our team healthy + PLD next year I think we finish in the 9-13 range and miss the playoffs by like 6 points.

It's just that the cost for both would be extreme and there's no way they could afford it. The same pieces would probably be involved in both deals.

Realize there’s been a dearth of top-5 trades but projected cost would be in the order of 5OA + Fla pick + B grade prospect / 2nd rounder which I wouldn’t qualify as “extreme”
