So your telling us Caufield can’t replace what Kyle Connor does ?

And by the way, his common lineman this year where Blake Wheeler and Cole Perfetti

Quarter 2,3,4 it's Connor who is ranked among the top ~5 scoring wingers in the league.

They have the assets, and they will always be on anyone’s list.

They just need to find a way to make space. With 17 players under contract and 7 millions of cap space (without Dubois signed) it’s a tough ask.

Carolina would have probably been the best match for Winnipeg, but I guess it’s not on his list.

Well, excuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuse me, GM Michaels! :sarcasm:

I have to agree that Beck and the FLA 1st is not a very high price to pay. I wrote my reply as a Beck fan which of course is not the way any deal should be viewed. I was also consistent in not wanting to expend assets in a rebuilding phase as I voted to wait for Dubois to become a UFA. Hughes himself is on record from last week’s presser about not looking to acquire assets that can help now and Dubois certainly fits that.

I love that Beck has certain highly desirable attributes and could become a key component of a winning team. He’d also be cost-controlled, provides high defensive reliability, is smart, very coachable, is close to being NHL-ready, can play physical and he can win critical faceoffs. He’s the
LA and Bergevin. Totally see it happening. Part of bargain bins revenge tour - and we all know he's had a stiffy for PLD like forever

Since his first full season, Connor is the 7th best scorer in the league.

Maybe Caufield gets there in time, but Connor has truly pushed the pace. And Caufield is expected to play on Suzuki’s wing.

I’m not worried about Dubois production, he’ll get his 60pts one way or an other.
No doubt Caufield is not at Connor level yet but he can bring to PLD what Connor did when they played together.

And I see PLD on the LW of Suzuki-Caufield

We were talking about the run to the Stanley Cup Final. Not after Danault left.

And as @Vachon23 mentioned, one thing PLD does real well is go to the front of the net and pick up a lot of garbage goals. A guy his size with the hands, he can definitely help bring a presence on the PP that we usually had smaller players play (Gallagher more specifically).
Sorry, got lost on that one...........

As mentioned, yup, big guy good hands, could help the PP around the net. Huge upgrade over Gally that;s for sure...........

Kings are definitely in a better position to trade prime assets for PLD than Montreal. I would be wary of trying to outbid them as PLD does not instantly make MTL a playoff them and they would likely still be a bottom team for a few more years.

That said, I'm not entirely sold on the PLD hype train. If Kent can get him on the cheap (assets traded and contract signed), fine, if not I'm more than okay with him not coming over.

Pretty sure the Habs decided a long time ago what they were willing to put on the table for PLD and will stick to that. If the LAK bid is vastly superior then so be it.

I know Molson probably won't interfere here.

But is Gorton feels like we should accelerate the rebuild to get the Habs into a playoff spot, I could see them make the move.

Especially with the tension that there was between Marty and HUGO last year. Marty wants to have a group that wins games and Molson wants to have a team in the playoffs.

I wouldn't be surprised if this accelerates a rebuild.

Just some numbers about Caufield and Connor..........

First 3 seasons for Connor 178 GP and 67 Goals
31 GPG

First 3 seasons of Caufield 123 GP 53 Goals
35GPG

Caufield has outscored Connor first 3 seasons in the league.............just some raw data.

As for PLD, he could do for the habs what he has done for the Jets at C or the wing...............

Again, as long as he doesn't cost too much all the way around.

Related to the cap hit and contract for PLD just read a very interesting The Athletic article about Caufield's contract. Why did Caufield settle for the lower number?

He gets $30mill given to him before the renegotiation of the new CBA in 2026 and under a 6% escrow freeze, when escrow was 17% before the freeze. By doing so, Caufield guarantees to actually keep millions more under the lower escrow than if the contract was structured a different way. The Habs got the term and the lower cap hit, Caufield got the cash up front before the CBA and under an escrow freeze.

Player agents around the league were extremely impressed at how brilliant it was for both sides, with the Habs taking advantage of their financial strength vs other teams to get the very essence of a win-win contract.

Just a note that I found VERY interesting.

Yes that’s something we can easily do with PLD but not every team can do (I do think LA can do that though). We should try to take advantage of that

Yeah it's clearly LA or MTL
odds are, it'll probably be LA
I just wanted us to take a stab at it is all lol
Habs will always get used to drive the $$$ up...............one thing for sure, Hughes will stick to his plan.

The Jets need a couple of teams to get in on this..................stay tuned.

Lol,

PLD does not make this team a playoff team,

the team finished 24 points out of the playoffs,

PLD will be in LA, and MB will be giving his middle finger to all habs nation

How many here thinks Slafkovsky will become a bonafide 60-65 points winger?
I know pre-draft most says that is was probably his ceiling if he ever reach it....

I do, I think a 30-30 powerforward is what he'll become.

...imo, Byfield was always a bust waiting to happen...he just can't keep up; if Chevy has Byfield as a main piece coming back, the 'Peg might finally be ready for another GM...

I have a buddy who is a huge wings fan who said he prays they don't end up with Byfield because he expected him to Bust.

Man may have been right

Dubois isnt in the the same situation as Suzuki and CC. Dubois will start his 8th year in the league in 23-24. He"s entering his prime years and those years are UFA. They're worth more than RFA years. I'm sure Suzuki and CC and the players will understand that because thats exactlky what they will be looking for down the road in their carreer

But there's a limit I'm willing to pay, also considering that we will have to give to get him. 8,5m is my absolute max. Over that, its a no for me.

As for what we give, I trust Hugues. We're not in the Bargain years anymore. There's a plan and whatever Hugues does, he'll follow the plan. Yes there will be mistakes, bad decisions, etc but on the overall run, we will be a competitive team in a couple years.
I disagree completely with your analysis. Caufield and Suzuki are being paid for their prime years. PLD is looking for a payday for his post prime years, and his prime years were nothing special to warrant such a salary. Teams more and more are signing their better players long-term right out of the ELC to try to lower the salary for the prime and just after rather than paying them later. Prime for NHL players is historically till age 26.

I'd like to hold onto Beck too. But if Chevy calls Hugo and says....this is the final offer....31st + Beck, you guys would say no?
Yes I would, only because if that is the price it signals Winnipeg is out of options. You either offer a lower prospect or make them Take bad contracts back

Nick Suzuki is 23, going 24 on Aug 10. PLD is 24, going 25 on June 24. 13,5 months difference... I dont see a major difference between the 2. They're both entering their prime and in my opinion, prime is a concept that varies from an individual to another. Where i "completely" disagree with you is when it ends. 26 is still young, Some will plateau, some will regress and some will be better. I believe there is still untaped potential with PLD.

It is true that teams tend to want long-term as soon as possible. But it doesn't always happen that way as you know. Robertson in Dallas is an example. He's 23, will sign another contract at 28.

Lol, like what do you do with a post like this..
I have to repeat again , why do people act like Dubois is 30.. ?:
PLD is 24, Suzuki is 23, Caufield is 22
Suzuki is signed til 31
Caufield signed til 30
And PLD looking to get signed til omfg 32.

It's nice to know that according to you, Suzuki is finished in 3 years, and Cole is finished in 4 years, man that was fast, the f*** are we paying them til 30 for??
So you're right, I guess we should be planning on getting younger talent than those 3, what we're we even thinking??

I do, I think a 30-30 powerforward is what he'll become.
Just cause he has size doesn’t mean he’ll be a power forward. He’s only shown to be a finesse player so far, who leaves himself vulnerable to incoming big hits.

He doesn’t need to be a power forward to be effective. Not everyone can be one. He doesn’t approach the game with the kind of edge and pushback that typical power forwards exhibit. You can see players who have those qualities already coming in with that attitude from the get-go.

If they can get him to play more physical and responds well to that, all the better. But, he’s not showing that it’s part of his game at this point in time.

I don't blame you. So many simultaneous conversations going on here that so much shit gets lost in the shuffle.

FWIW, I buy at least 60 points. But, I very much doubt he becomes a power forward (as some are projecting). I would have loved to have Tatar back on a short deal, to act as his mentor and as someone who is liked by several players who were his teammates while he was here. I’m assuming it wouldn’t cost all that much to sign Tatar, who is now a UFA.

Well thing changed in the sense it's not about being interested in doing something or not.
Hellebuyck isn't a possibility anymore, the door is officially shut. They have 2 hot potatoes, maybe 3, to deal with now. And if they whiff this off-season they will forced into a rebuild, interested or not.

You'll need to see what the returns are in trades of those players. Because potentially, what if they trade Hellebuyck to the Pens for Jarry. Or to Vancouver for Demko. Or to Philly for Hart. Or even to the Preds for Sarros (as he's also been rumored to be traded). They're not going into a rebuild if they bring in goalies like that in a trade.
