The more this plays out, the more it seems he's using MTL for $$ leverage.

The new Basu article basically just says his contract ask for Montreal will be higher than other locations. Arpon says "the sense we get" which sounds like he's been told that.

"For example, he could accept slightly less money to go to a Stanley Cup contender than he would to a rebuilding team like the Canadiens."

Stay strong HuGo. No need to move heaven and earth for him, and no need to pay 9m for him.
“The sense we got” is the same as “salary we projected”…. “he could accept slightly less $$$”

All info based on Basu/Godin’s speculating..

I think a lot of people are forgetting that he has asked to be traded on every team he has been on.I think he even asked for a trade in junior. His value as a player is one thing .The baggage that goes along with him is another. He could very well pull the same stunt here
He didn't ask a trade in junior, he even went played in Cap Breton

Adam Fox ask a trade from 2x teams, is he a problem ?

Could also easily be Cheveldayoff trying to fake a nonexistent bidding war.

Yeah. I feel like those are the only two possibilities. He knows how to get to the Habs if that's his real preference.

Except he acknowledges the contract ask this is just a projection. Saying he would ask more from the Habs is too out of the blue. In my opinion someone told him that, whether it's true or not.

Ok, but you have to give to get and there will be other teams making offers.

Sure I'd replace Beck with Farrell, Mesar, AND Kidney. But I'd be much happier with PLD for 8 years at 7.5M than with Anderson, Dvo, Beck, and Florida 1st (dang that is a big offer).

Caufield - Suzuki - Slaf
5th overall - PLD - Roy
RHP - Dach - Heineman/Ylonen

...it's far too big an offer, imo...the 'Peg doesn't have that kind of leverage for a PLD trade...

Oh ok so the only 2 NHL teams he has played for and he's only 24 years old
He's a free agent in a year. Would it somehow be better in your mind if he just took Winnipeg to arbitration and walked as a UFA? Don't really understand how being upfront about what you want and giving the team a way to navigate that is supposed to be some horrific character flaw. It's not a red flag that a guy wanted to leave Columbus and is now telling a smaller Canadian Columbus that he doesn't want to extend with them.

Did Shea Weber have horrible character red flags because he signed a predatory offer sheet? The offer sheet he signed included 80M over the first 6 years with 68M in signing bonuses, and was specifically designed to make it as painful as possible for Nashville to match. Is Matt Tkachuk a bad character guy with red flags for doing the exact same thing with Calgary?

The article reads like they've been told info off of the record. They're not just pulling things out of their ass and saying "we have no idea but."

If you're a reporter, you don't just start shooting off things like "we were just told by Pat Brisson" if you ever want another scoop again.

Carolina actually makes a lot of sense. They can move KK, Teravainen, a 1st & a good D prospect like Morrow for him, and a 2024 2nd.

Their center core is then Aho, PLD, Staal. They'd have to replace Teravainen on the wing, but may be able to do that by resigning Pacioretty to a bonus laden contract, signing a UFA or through another trade.

Winnipeg gets a young player signed long term in KK, and can flip Teravainen if he doesn't want to sign with them, and probably get decent assets for him if they retain.

It was never said he would ask more from the Habs, it's only said he could ask for more from a rebuilding team, it doesn't imply that "all" the rebuilding team would be treated equally to begin with. And it's still guesswork from the author.

So it's just two randos who threw some numbers outhere and now it's known as a truth... I was always surprise how could reading comprehension but a test subject in school. Now I understand.

A better tool to project salary.

With Suzuki's contract, 8,3M seems to be a logical amount to pay for PLD since you're buying more UFA years.

Hey @Mudz you want to take back what you said about my reading comprehension (despite butchering the shit out of your spelling)? Basu himself said he actually heard this so.

You were saying?

It does actually. Or at least it says that's the sense he gets. Which is exactly what I wrote.

The exact quote I posted above. Specifically mentions the Canadiens as a team he would ask more from.

TT have a 10 teams on his no trade list, Winnipeg must be on it but yeah Carolina could make sense I think if PLD agree to go there.

Did you miss the "For example, he could" by any chance in that exact quote?

I thought he said years ago that Josh Anderson and David Savard was his great buddies, did he forget that they play in MTL?

He’s working you like a fiddle. He’s an RFA using the team who owns his rights like a puppeteer while also trying to use the Habs as leverage to get paid.

No lol. If he was targeting the most money, he wouldn't make it seem like he's only interested in a couple of teams. That's how you get paid less, not more. The more teams there are in the running, the higher the offers are.
