For clarification: $9M is Basu/Godin’s projection based on said comparables NOT public/private info released from PLD camp
That change everything !

It's a pretty clear sentiment he wants more money from a rebuilding team.. it might not end up being 9 per, but it's still going to cost us more in acquisition cost and money/term than makes sense right now.

PLD and Brisson have just created an enivornment where they won't get to Montreal.

It's fine, it doesn't make sense if you are paying market value for him in the trade AND on the contract.

Carolina can do it. Minnesota can do it.
He probably read this board and said f*** that

Yeah it really is and it's a been pattern with PLD so maybe it's not such a bad thing to just avoid it all and move on, even if he is a very good player and would be a good add to the Habs. Drama just seems to follow this guy.
And this board
PLD has been debated for 1 year now

if he does not come... HF will explode
I seriously don't care if he doesn't come.
I don't want him to earn more money than Suzuki or Caufield. Dudes a POS and only wants the bigbuck in an op team. Also probably using the habs as leverage.

If you told me what id give ofr him , Mesar our trash florida first and a cap dump , thats it

Ah yes everybody freaking out now not realizing how negotiations work apparently. Asking 9M does not equal receiving 9M. I think you can reasonably expect him to land in the 7.75-8.25M range when it's all said and done. This news doesn't really change anything imo

Can't wait to see where he end up. I'm guessing in the East.

Carolina
Pittsburgh
Montreal
Florida
Boston
Montreal

Yeah I said this earlier this week. He'll probably get between 7.5-8.25 AAV. Habs are mostly paying for his ufa years which are more expensive than Suzuki's and caufield's years in theory but I think they're superior players so it balances out to him getting around the same. A sign and trade then 7.85 x 8 years is fair. The guy should know that since he's a francophone star, he'll be getting all the sponsors and endorsements in Quebec

...Well. He didn't even ask for 9 at this point, it's just Basu projecting he will ask for that.

So it's just two randos who threw some numbers outhere and now it's known as a truth... I was always surprise how could reading comprehension but a test subject in school. Now I understand.

A better tool to project salary.

With Suzuki's contract, 8,3M seems to be a logical amount to pay for PLD since you're buying more UFA years.

I guess we'll just see what happens, I have no problem going up to 8 and I wouldn't quibble over 250k with a big cap jump on the way, but if it's going to be a bidding war with 5-6 other teams there's a good chance someone is willing to pay a price that doesn't make sense for us (both in $ and asset cost). The whole time my position has been that this makes sense if we get a deal on his market value, and that's still where I'm at.

I'm honestly more concerned about the asset cost than the contract though given the cap is about to jump by 5-6M next summer and is projected to jump another ~3M the year after. If we get a good deal on the trade itself and the AAV number ends up being 8.5 that's not the end of the world when Suzuki & Caufield are both locked in long-term now and we still have a couple years until we have any other real cap pressures.

...Beck is a dealbreaker, imo...that kid has phenomenal middle-six C written all over him...
Ok, but you have to give to get and there will be other teams making offers.

Sure I'd replace Beck with Farrell, Mesar, AND Kidney. But I'd be much happier with PLD for 8 years at 7.5M than with Anderson, Dvo, Beck, and Florida 1st (dang that is a big offer).

Caufield - Suzuki - Slaf
5th overall - PLD - Roy
RHP - Dach - Heineman/Ylonen

To MTL: PLD (with 8 year extension at an AAV in between Suzuki and Caufield)

To WPG: Anderson + Dvo + Beck + FLA 1st
Um maybe Florida 1st and Dvorak .If they want more than that he can go somewhere else .Anderson has almost as much value on the trade market by himself and throwing in Beck too

The more this plays out, the more it seems he's using MTL for $$ leverage.

The new Basu article basically just says his contract ask for Montreal will be higher than other locations. Arpon says "the sense we get" which sounds like he's been told that.

"For example, he could accept slightly less money to go to a Stanley Cup contender than he would to a rebuilding team like the Canadiens."

Stay strong HuGo. No need to move heaven and earth for him, and no need to pay 9m for him.

I think a lot of people are forgetting that he has asked to be traded on every team he has been on.I think he even asked for a trade in junior. His value as a player is one thing .The baggage that goes along with him is another. He could very well pull the same stunt here

Could also easily be Cheveldayoff trying to fake a nonexistent bidding war.
