I mean I haven't watched him play in Europe, but his stats look pretty good considering he was just 20 and 21 years old:

Last year: 38 points in 54 games
This year: 22 points in 25 games

He’s a fine player, PPG in the DEL for a decent stretch he just had a bad injury that he had a hard time with (high ankle sprain I think).

How is his skating - has it developed? My recollection is that he had good agility but not straight ahead speed, but I could be wrong.

Why? Must Lou sign everyone he drafts?
Because he has talent. He played very well as a 20 year old in Liiga in 20-21 and pretty well in the German Del in the recently completed 2021-2022 season as a 21 year old. The Islanders would have been foolish not to sign him to a two way contract and let his rights expire. Look at the caliber of prospect that teams are signing before June 1st and many are not even close to being as good as Ishkakov and yet their NHL teams are still signing them to ELC's!

Iskhakov seems like a prospect who will get his fair share of points (and maybe even highlights) at the AHL level but doesn’t seem like someone who will translate to the NHL well in my opinion.

In order to be effective as an undersized forward at the NHL level you need to either have strength on your skates or speed. From the little I remember from Iskhakov’s scouting report, he has neither of those.

Having good east/west edgework will only get you so far if you’re getting knocked off the puck easily or can’t evade checkers with speed.

He has to date!

In fact, he's signed ALL Islander draft picks. Or at least added them to the system via his son in BPort (3 were signed to AHL deals).

But every single one who was on deck for a signing has been signed.

Cockerill and Migreas would be the next guys up to bat. Maybe Krygier if he can't transfer. Would need to be signed by August 15th.

I'd add Cockerill and Krygier but I can do without Migreas. Krygier seems tough, could carve out a role in the A. Cockerill at least has a skill set to add in PKing and speed.

Did you see Ishkakov play when he was at UConn?

A remember a few highlights from UConn but I still can’t get that clip out of my head when he was knocked unconscious. I almost just re-posted it but then thought better.

I suppose he won’t skate with his head down anymore but I can’t help but think that’s bound to happen again in some way, shape or form. He’s just too small for a league that’s gotten bigger, faster and stronger.

If I had to guess, the team will look to get Cockerill and Krygier under contract with BPort. Cockerill would have the better shot at an actual ELC, but I couldn't for the life of me see why this team would use a contract on him at this point.

In light of Mirageas leaving Providence basically midseason and never showing up anywhere since leads me to believe there were some, well, let's say problems, that he needs time to take care of. He was actually having his best season since his freshman year, but was looking like a non-prospect.

As such, I think he'll be the first exception to this all.

BUT it wouldn't surprise me to see him show up with the club's ECHL team when and if he decides to continue things on the hockey front. Doesn't really matter, one way or the other.

He is small and not a great skater from what I remember. Guys like that don’t usually translate to being good NHL players. Hopefully Lou includes him in a deal. IMO he will never play a game with the Isles.

Not all ELC signings are for NHL players, though, AHL teams need players and it's generally better to have some younger guys with some chance of surprising and becoming NHLers. I agree his odds of being an impact NHLer are rather slim, but they are still better than your typical AHL journeyman that would take the contract spot otherwise. And he's shown he can play pretty well at the pro level in Europe, so I think he'd make a pretty solid AHLer.

It's not a major move, but I don't see any real reason not to do it either.
