Isles Prospect Talk 2020-21 Pt. III

I've never ever ever understood this.

I can't play without my strong hand on the bottom. I generate all my power with it. All my sense of puchhandling control is allowed and controlled by that hand. The weaker hand is ideal for just "holding" the stick steady, both for shots and stickhandling.

For the kids we work with, we just give them sticks without curves and let them figure it out for themselves. I think everyone tends to find a more natural way of holding the stick.

On the other hand, I've worked with a ton of guys over time who just aren't good stickhandlers and passers and shooters. Their strong hand is on top. I tell them that my theory is that they were taught to have that hand there, whether it was natural for them or not. They're now used to it and it is engrained in their play, but they should have had that strong hand on the bottom the whole time.

I've never been able to do squat with my strong hand on the top.
That's funny because I have exactly the opposite opinion. Anything you do with the stick in your hands is basically a lever, and the lower hand is the fulcrum. It's the top hand that generates the power (by snapping back, which moves the blade of the stick forward). It's like swinging a baseball bat or a golf club - it's getting speed at the end of the bat or the club that generates power. With a hockey stick, you'll never be able to do that with your lower hand as the stick can only move as fast as your arm can move. It's the top hand pulling back that creates the snap that accelerates the blade end of the stick.

I've given this a lot of thought. ;)

Fascinating. Although the right hand is my dominant hand, I've been shooting/swinging righty in hockey, baseball, golf, and tennis every step of the way.

All attempts to do it "the other way" have floundered. I couldn't make it happen. Power and aim were completely out of the equation.

I've given this a lot of thought too.:naughty:

Same with my son, who is just 4. Put a straight-blade stick in his hand and all shooting has been done from the left side. It was never really a question for him.

It’s so habitual with time. I’ve forced myself into the opposite, feels so weird.

You train him well; straight-blade.

The Sher-Wood 85 flex for me.

I think your earlier point was ultimately correct - about how it's really just how you pick the thing up the first time.

BTW, when you swing a baseball bat or golf club righty, your right (strong) hand is the one that creates the snap by rolling over and the left hand is the fulcrum.

I can shoot the puck from both sides. 50 goals would be easy for me. Also I drain 25 ft birdie puts like there is no tomorrow.

Despite the twigs, the kid can really fire the biscuit...

Let's not forget he'll be in the Memorial Cup since St. John's is hosting. Those of us who watch the games on the NHL Network remember how much Dobson dominated for two championships, showcasing what we were getting. Now we have another chance to see another prospect on the biggest stage in Canadian Junior.

Dobson's 1st Memorial Cup was laced with envy as I thought we had no chance at getting him. The 2nd one was pure ecstacy as we knew he was Isles property.

Looking forward to seeing Dufour. Remember that this kid was a former #6 overall pick in the QMJHL Draft so he was recognized early as a premium talent.

TWELVE Game winners - I deleted the column but also 60% in the shootout

295 shots on goal! 17.6% shooting percentage.

When you look at that highlight video of his goals, there's a few things that stand out:

He has a knack for timing his off-puck movement
Quick release
Doesn't favor a particular location. Plenty of goals low and high.
Seems like he has a hard shot since some of these got through places you don't normally score through.
Goes to the dirty areas
I don't think I saw ONE slap shot

I'll get hit for this, but stylistically he's very similar to Jarome Iginla.

Saw Dufour’s 50 goal video, that Lawrence kid is small but I really liked his game. Would be a good add for BPT.

This is not a general, wide open statement of any sort, but my goodness, several times in recent games, I saw a player with the puck and thought it was Nelson.

Upon closer look, it was Koivula.

Has that happened to anyone over the last few games?

Only on his scoring chance in the 1st period yesterday, otherwise he looks like an AHL version of Brock out there to me.

Out of the handful of games I saw at Bridgeport, I truly saw it. However in the NHL, he just can't get it going I feel.

1:55, goal no 9 is a nice slapshot.
