Spot on. I said it in the past, MDC reminds me of Steve Bernier.

Another guy who seemingly never developed his skills after being drafted and simply benefited from playing against kids early on.

Bernier was just lucky that he made it to the NHL prior to the shift to more speed and skating ability. But once the NHL made the switch, Bernier was relegated to the minors.

The fact that MDC played with Bernier in Bridgeport, and didn't refine his skills, especially his skating, edgework and release, is telling.
To be honest, though, by the time Bernier was relegated to the minors he was an older player (over 30, from what I recall without checking). Bernier was a terrible 1st round pick, but he was a serviceable NHL player, albeit as a 4th liner.

Bernier was very lucky that he broke into the NHL when he did. A few years later and he probably doesn't get as long of a look and spends far more time in the AHL.

To me, the takeaway that MDC should have gotten after seeing Bernier in Bridgeport is, wow, I need to better my game or I am going to be forever relegated to the minors.

Instead MDC seemed to lack any sense of urgency or motivation to up his game beyond whatever he developed in juniors.

There was a brief, and I mean very brief, glimpse when MDC worked a little harder and played smarter under Trotz initially, but since he didn't improve his skating, release or strength, it didn't last long.

Just in the first 10 minutes I think we’re all going to be surprised

He’s defensively responsible and keeps it simple and plays center and wing

Announcers are praising his IQ

We might have lucked into a Joel Otto type

He’s a great prospect. Just like big right handed defenseman are premium assets, big goal scorers who can skate are similar.

It’s been the best ‘value’ pick NYI has made in the Lamoriello era in my opinion. They need to draft more guys who have at least one NHL tool already present and let the development dictate if they fill in the rest.

Guys like Ljungkrantz and Iskhakov as examples never checked off any boxes on draft day and they need to move away from that.

Ljungkrantz was a name and its absolutely baffling to think he was our 1st selection in 2020

You mean DuFour as an Otto type? That's interesting, and the first I've heard that comparison. Not that what I've heard means much, or that I'm questioning your opinion. I don't follow prospects, and just go off of the observations of the many here. But it's the first time I've hear him described positively on defense.

I doubt too many of us have actually watched a full game of his, I certainly haven't.

And as I type this, he SCORES!

For those who hope he improves his skating . . . LOL

Dufour 3 - Shawn-whatever 3

The 3rd goal was impressive, can't wait for the video highlight. Gets it off the faceoff and shields the puck on his backhand to the net, pots the rebound. Complete individual effort.

Dufour causes a delay of game penalty. The kid has taken over the game.

11 SOGs for Dufour (3 goals) at a little past half the game. The kid is a shoot first and ask questions later type.
With 60 assists though . . .

I wonder what Button is going to say between periods since he didn't think to mention Dufour in pregame

William Dufour with a monster first 10 minutes in the second period single handily wiping out a 3 goal deficit. St John’s takes the lead on a ppg now 4-3 he’s a shooter for sure. Not afraid to bull rush the net.
