Islanders fire Lane Lambert, hire Patrick Roy as head coach

Colorado finished bottom ten twice in three years with Roy as HC, that's pretty good in your opinion?

The year before Roy was hired, they were the second-worst team in the league. The year after he quit, they were the worst team in the league, by far. During his stint, the team had a .577 point percentage, good for 16th in the league.

Everything considered, he did all right, with a pretty poor roster.

Lamoreillo is senile if he thinks the Isles should be any higher in the standings based on their roster.

He built a team with 3 top 6 forwards. Should anyone be surprised the Isles are a bubble team?

He won coach of the year
And what did he do the other two seasons when he wasn't getting Vezina level goaltending from Varlamov?

He quit weeks before training camp, Roy had just as much of a hand in the Avs finishing dead last in '16/'17 as anyone else. Dude quit on the team.

He quit 6 weeks before training camp. Bednar was hired 2 weeks later. This is plenty of time to make the transition. The notion that the Avs had the 3rd worst season any team has had this millenium because Roy didn't resign early enough in the offseason is absurd. Particularly given that the Avs actually started that season decently well: they went 9-9 in their first 18 games.

Funny thing is, I don't remember anyone blaming Roy back then; It was Bednar who was most criticized for that season. Then Bednar won the Cup, so Roy had to be the scapegoat, and you started hearing this retrospective narrative that the Avs were derailed in 16-17 because of Roy's resignation or because he was the secret co-GM who made all the team's bad moves, while Sakic made all the team's good moves.

First order of business for Roy - Teach Sorokin Hand/Eye coordination. The dude can’t track a puck for the life of him.

This is ridiculously wrong.

I started to make an extensive list to tell you how incorrect this statement is but hf being hf, it refreshed and wiped my text.

Suffice it to say, this is 100% false. Roy quit on a bad team, a relative unknown coach was hired, and fans knew they were in for a long season. Roy pouted because he wanted more say in player personnel acquisitions and didn’t get it.

Roy deserves the criticism of how he left the Avs but he also deserves to be given a second chance should a franchise deem him worthy.

I hope he does well on the island and am happy he’s back in the NHL. I am also glad he’s not a part of the Avs organization any longer.

or he is 81 and realizes this is his last chance at winning a cup and couldn't care less about the team in 5 years and is going all in now
