Islanders fire Lane Lambert, hire Patrick Roy as head coach

"Roy would have the final say in all hockey matters. Then-Avalanche General Manager Greg Sherman retained his post, but was considered the general manager "in name only." At the time, Roy was the only coach in the NHL who had the title or powers of General Manager."

Is this the move they need? Might the roster construction be the problem instead?
Its moreso the roster construction but their coaching was abysmal too. When you are getting less out of players there is a serious concern. Today was definitely a game that they got contributions from their D and other unsung players (like Fasching). I think the roster needs an overhaul soon, but less drastic and more of a retool.

I’m excited, Roy is a wild man! He’s going to hate Barzal, Roy hated Duchene and Barzal is somehow even more skilled and even more contact averse

He quit 6 weeks before training camp. Bednar was hired 2 weeks later. This is plenty of time to make the transition. The notion that the Avs had the 3rd worst season any team has had this millenium because Roy didn't resign early enough in the offseason is absurd. Particularly given that the Avs actually started that season decently well: they went 9-9 in their first 18 games.
That's absolutely hysterical you think a team can change head coaches a month before training camp starts and it not have an impact. The cope is strong. But the fact you'll happily wave away him quitting on his team right before the season began just shows the level fans will go to in order to justify anything.

You should also take some time and review his transactions as co-GM in Colorado. I think it would be quite enlightening for you. I'm sure you'll be thrilled when the Islanders acquire players like Reto Berra and Brad Stuart for for premium prices.

He had a 130-92-24 record in Colorado thats over .575 so yeah pretty good
13/14 - .683
14/15 - .549
15/16 - .500

He got worse every year he was in Colorado, made one playoff appearance where they lost in the first round and then quit on the team right before the 16/17 season began. If his name was anything other than Patrick Roy no one would be saying his head coaching record is "pretty good".

The Jack Adams he won largely belongs to Semyon Varlamov having the best season of his entire career.

Now THERE'S a thought!!

now THAT'S funny!!
Roster construction a problem ...yes. But that doesn't equal job security for a coach.
Both can be true at the same time.
Bubble roster that also needed a coaching change?

Maurice quit mid season .How did that work out for the Jets.....and how is Pauls new team doing?

Roy is entertaining. He's also a horrible coach at the NHL level
He has a winning recordat NHL level.
130-92-24

Over time in his playing career Roy always seemed to generate his share of fans and critics.
Say what you will .....
the guy is a proven winner.
Islanders are better today than they were yesterday. imo

Isles arent gonna be looking at a backup goalie unless Varly is hurt again. Isles needs are now a B6 winger, and a proper third pair defenseman like Andy Greene.

What does that have to do with the Avs and Patrick Roy?

As a player sure, not as a head coach in the NHL.
1. The post I replied to insinuated a coach quitting six weeks before training camp hamstringed the team out of the gate. I gave an example where coach quit mid season and it turned out to be right move for the team (and coach)

2. Three seasons coaching in NHL......barely started.

I get it, you don't like Roy. You don't think he is a good hire. You would prefer he failed and validate your bashing of his hiring one game into the deal. Cool.

I'm of the opposite opinion.

Cheers

The 21/22 Jets missed the playoffs. Once again, no idea what this has to do with Roy being a good coach or how that justifies Roy quitting on his team.

So how many years does he need to coach before his record actually counts? I mean, if the first three seasons don't count does the same apply to seasons four, five, six, etc.?

I'm an Avs fan, I love Patrick Roy the player. I've not said anything about hating the man or wishing him to fail. Not once. Nor does making factual observations about his head coaching record make me a hater. You're simply projecting. I'm sorry stating simple facts upsets you, but the world isn't divided into simple binaries.

Cheers

Facts ? Yes. Like I said
Fact - Roy has a winning record as a head coach in the NHL.
Fact - Roy is a winner in his playing career and GM / Coaching in Junior.

Good hire in my opinion.

One playoff appearance in three attempts and a playoff record of 3-4. Congrats.

You're a dyed-in-the-wool fan, of course that's what you'll say.
Facts and stats are on my side

One play off appearance in 3 .

Cassidy did that in Washington in his first NHL coaching stint .......went back to Junior.
Hows is he doing now ?

A lot of hot takes here. How about we give the guy a chance before confidently making any projections?

The Isles had a boring, formulaic, uninspiring coach who brought no gravitas to the table. Roy is the exact opposite and is just what this team needs. Whether that’s a formula for success with this squad is anyone’s guess. I’m betting he succeeds.

Well, that philosophy works a bit when Barzal & Horvat are on. Not so much with Palmieri stumbling around, or Clutterbuck who is as nimble as an overloaded grocery bagger.
Ninety percent of the league has a grocery bagger on their fourth line
32 teams and a hard cap practically demands it.
