Islanders fire Lane Lambert, hire Patrick Roy as head coach

It’s still wild to me the Isles fired a coach only a year and a half into his first head coaching gig despite making the playoffs last year and being in the playoff race this year with an okayish roster that was expected be wildcard at best. It’s also wild that the fanbase clamored for this and celebrated the hiring of a pretty universally panned NHL coach with regards to their previous stint. All around, I feel like I’m in bizarro world haha.

Imagine how Pens fan feel. Begging , screaming , demanding a coaching change after 6 years without winning a single play off round.
Missing the play offs by losing game 81 at home to a Hawks team that was in tank mode all season.
But it's the Islanders that fire the coach ?!

Hey the Bruins fired Cassidy. Made the play offs every season.
Boudreau replaced by Tochett.
Panthers fired their coach after winning the President trophy and going out in second round.

NHL some tome operates in the " bizzaro world"

Lou once fired Julien weeks away from the playoffs with a winning record I can’t recall the exact stats but NJ was playing near.600 that season. It’s not strange when it is Lou. Overall he has had a good record of coaching moves. Hard not to like going to Roy. Heard there was interest in him from multiple teams. Lou didn’t hesitate.

Their play has been deeply horrendous this year; it’s a miracle they’re not totally eliminated already.

I think he fired Ftorek with 8 games to go in season . Devils were in first place. Replaced him with Robinson. Won the Cup.

This seems a little abrupt and desperate.

Weren't they right in the thick of the wildcard race still?

Also, wasn't Roy an complete and absolute trainwreck last time he tried NHL coaching?
Won the Jack Adams Trophy once with the Avs.

His team was always competitive. He resigned because Colorado wanted to rebuild and he wanted no part of it.

No.
and many coaches have been let go after decent to good seasons.
Brunette
Cassidy
Boudreau
Babcock ( leafs)
Woodcock
Julien
Keefe ( soon to be)

Several things come onto play Expectations, where the bar is set, what coaches are available.

It's very few teams thst lower the bar and keep coaches no matter how poor the results.
Montreal
Pittsburg

If you watched the team play every game it wouldn’t be wild to you. Lane Lambert is a great guy but he wasn’t getting the job done. There are things that are clearly coaching issues and things that can be corrected that doesn’t matter what the roster looks like. Trotz came in and did it day one. Look at the oilers now under Knoblach.

Well it’s all based on expectations and performance, right? The Isles are performing and have performed as expected.

Well I’ve watched like two Islander games this year, can you highlight what made him particularly horrendous this year? Because on paper, this Isles team is performing as anticipated.

Virtually the same roster under Trotz, probably better with the addition of Horvat and development of Dobson.

He made absolutely no in game adjustments. The teams defensive structure was an absolute train wreck. If you don’t believe me look at everything Roy is saying on him needing to correct these things. Lou saying the team wasn’t responding and the things weren’t being corrected.

Blown leads. Lambert just doesn’t seem
To have a grasp on how to play in different situations Trotz knew when we go into the third period with a lead that it’s time to lock it down and play more disciplined defensively. Not turtling just with more structure to win the game. The isles were almost unbeatable for most of Trotz tenure with a third period lead.

Lambert is a great guy but the team and it’s play was clearly not up to the standard it should have been.

You have, constantly, implying Roy is the reincarnation of Bruce Cassidy.

Funny you now change subjects to suit your agenda when I provide you examples of other amateur coaches with similar backgrounds that flamed out as NHL coaches, though.

You changed the subject immediately after being given counter examples claiming you didn't say exactly what you did. It's called covering your ass.

Try to keep up.
You started your own fight by jumping 15 steps and arguing something someone never said

Oh i know stay out of it blah blah blah.. he sucked years ago which is somehow critically relevant

I don't have the exact current stats, but here's an older one that's exemplary. In their 23rd game of the year, the Isles were up 2-0 against the Sharks in the 3rd period and went on to lose 3-2, capping off their TWELFTH blown 3rd period of the season at that time. At that time, the Isles had a lead in the 3rd period and lost in over half of their games. That's not half their games in which they had a lead -- literally half of their total games.

That trend continued, culminating in another blown lead against Chicago without Bedard, Athanasiou, Beauvillier, Hall, Tyler Johnson, Connor Murphy, and Zaitsev. That was the final straw.

If the Isles blew leads in the 3rd period anywhere close to league average going back decades, they would be firmly in the playoffs. You have to turn to coaching at that point (among other issues like tons of lazy penalties, an abysmal PK, getting caved in with shots, etc.).

The Sharks game was worse than that. It was 4-1 in the third, and they lost 5-4 in OT.

Interest must have been strong. I suppose it took the league 9 years to locate him. Guy's like Waldo.
