Yes.
Behind only McDavid, Draisaitl and McKinnon and in a group with about 4 other guys who trade positions year to year.
This year he’s top five.
I kind of lean this way but voted in the neighborhood as after McDavid and Mack it's very fluid in time and there is a group of about 8 or 9 guys that have a claim to top 5ish spots and many of them are frankly interchangeable.

That being said there isn't a strong argument to say he isn't top 5 just a stronger one for being in the neighbourhood.

I think that’s fair. The way I look at it is that he’s 3rd in points for centers and is one of the better ones defensively. He’s done that with by far the weakest linemates at ES with some combination of Kuzmenko, Lafferty and Mikheyev most of the year. That said, he does play on an elite PP.
On balance I think he’s top 5 this year.
But it’s also hard to ignore some of the major hardware that players like Matthews and Draisaitl have from 2 or 3 years ago.
I think there’s a strong case for voting top 5 and also for voting in the neighborhood, depending on how many years you use.
The people who voted No, don’t really have a case imo based on his play the last two years.

Nice math. Lol.
In the neighborhood means maybe.
The actual poll results are 74 Yes and 23 No.

In the Neighborhood means that he isn't a top 5 but is close. Now lets look at the poll question.

"Is Pettersson a top 5 C in the league?"

Hmmm sounds like that options a negative then.

Voted yes but am cool with the "in the neighborhood" option too. The reality is that there is a clear top 3 In McJesus, MacK, and Drai. The next 2 are more debatable IMO.

Why would anyone care what a player did 3 years ago in a poll about who is currently a top 5 center? Especially for young centers like EP, Jack Hughes etc. Weird post.
It is not a weird post, consistency matters. It is way more probable for someone to have a career year and the drop off over someone who can produce at the highest levels year after year.

The best are the best because every season they perform.

Sure. For more mature players like McDavid and McKinnon. Not so much for the younger guys like Jack Hughes and Pettersson though. What they did 3 years ago is irrelevant at this point.

Perhaps next time you shouldn't make a flawed poll that has 1 positive and two negatives as it causes vote splitting.
I think basically everyone besides you interpret "in the neighbourhood" more something like "could be but not 100% certain" or "probably" or "maybe" that is very far from a negative answer. It's the in between answer which most posters here complain if it's not there and for a good reason.

That's not what in the neighbourhood means to me.

To me there's clearly a top 3 with McDavid, Draisaitl, and MacKinnon. Over the last few years they're #1, #2, #3 in overall scoring and #1, #3, #4 in pts/game amongst all players. There's a huge jump between their pts/game and the rest of the league and they're in a tier of their own.

In the next tier you've got Matthews, Barkov, Pettersson, Crosby, Hughes. What order you rank them is pretty arbitrary and I'm not going to get up in arms if someone has any of those players 4th or 8th. Pettersson is clearly in the conversation for top-5 C in the league, but it's a fluctuating list with a lot of great players and what order you list them in is pretty arbitrary.

McDavid
MacKinnon
Draisatl / Matthews
EP
Eichel / Crosby
Barkov / Hughes

So that’s a yea for me

I won’t be surprised if Eichel & EP ascend past Drai & Matthews because they have better all-around games but it’s hard to ignore the latter two’s sustained reg season dominance

mcdavid, matthews, mackinnon, draisaitl i would take over pettersson.

at any given time, eichel, barkov, hughes, maybe still crosby are in the same territory. hell, sometimes pettersson is outshined by jt miller as center.

so "in the neighbourhood" is a very fair tier to place him in. these things are never as definitive as people around here like to think.

Great post, i would pick Barkov at 5 over Pettersson but im also biased. It's really hard to argue with the top 4 you said but after that i think its more of a preference thing than an objective fact.
