Is Mitch Marner the 2nd best RW in the game, right behind Kucherov?

I have him 4th after Kucherov, Pastrnak, and Rantanen. He's a better player than Panarin. Marner is an outstanding defensive player and pks along with being a top offensive player.

The 3 above him have done way more in the playoffs, while also performing at a similar high standard during the regular season. All 3 currently have more points than Marner.

So, yeah, 4th.

Is playoff production people's only reason for Pastrnak over Marner? Some posters even have Pastrnak "clearly" above Marner. Would be fun if people motivated their answers a little bit more in these kinds of threads when it's as close as this.

As a Leafs fan I have him tied in #4 with Panarin.

Pastrnak, Kucherov and Rantanen are better. I think any sensible Leafs fan would have any of those 3 guys before Marner.

I say this as someone who has watched Marner play for over 8 years, dating back to his days on the London Knights and winning the memorial cup. I knew Marner would be Elite then. But he has a ways to go (and very well could do it) before he is more valuable than those 3 players.

He also has the worst contract of these top 5 right wingers.

Pasta is also the better goal scorer by far.

But when you have this level of Rw’s in the league playoffs performance should carry a ton of value.

I don't disagree. Still though.

Marner's got 47 more assists since the start of 20/21 while Pastrnak got 12 more goals. Pastrnak has only played 9 less games. It's a pretty big difference in total production between the two.

The reason for Pastas down numbers have been explained already in this thread.

All these teams Toronto/Tampa/Colorado/Boston have one goal and that’s to win the Cup.
3/4 players have shown they can take over a series so it’s tough to put the one ahead of the bunch right now.

You guys keep bringing up this timeframe when Pasta was having a down year (by his standards but still scored 40) but ignoring that the man lost a child and was a bit distracted by it.

A month ago on Lesfs board I’m reading how he’s a spoiled brat, disappears in heavy/tight checking big games and now he’s the best RW in hockey

I pity shop owners in downtown Toronto if the Leafs win a round in the next 2 years before Matthews bolts for Western US

I can't see how he's not, the kid is pretty elite. Easily the second best forward on the Leafs.
No.

Pastrnak superior. Rantanen as well

Leafs fans are delusional about many things, just throw the Marner is better than Pasta view into that pile.

Kuch
Ranta

Kapri/Marner/Pastra

The latter 3 depending on what you personally value in a winger, and whether contracts are considered.

I know Leafs fans tend to not include play-off performances when evaluating players since they don't have much to go on but Marner is a complete no show while Pasta is over a PPG.

Marner > Pasta is downright laughable.

pasta belongs in the first tier. Not grouped in with KK and Marner.

List of RWs who have won the Conn Smythe Trophy since it was introduced in 1965:

Yvan Cournoyer
Reggie Leach
Guy Lafleur
Mike Bossy
Claude Lemieux
Patrick Kane
Tim Thomas (very famous right winger)
Justin Williams
Alex Ovechkin (plays either wing)

Marner is right up there with those guys, for sure.

Or, we could make a list of RWs who have scored more than 7 goals in 6 playoff seasons, but I think HF Boards has two character limits. First, there are only so many characters you could type in a single post. Second, if I were to even try do that, I could get a warning for bad character. So I won't. :naughty:

All you need to know about Marner he’s the only player in the league who’s fathers first name is household to hockey fans

Pastrnak is superior to Marner. Until Marner shows up in the playoffs this is a non-starter.

I’m biased by my love for Pasta but yeah, I think he probably is.

i‘m a latecomer to hockey and never latched onto one team for my fandom so I lurk on many team‘s boards. I always enjoy the Leafs board because of the insanity when things aren’t going well.

Many people there were ready to ride Marner out of town a few weeks ago. His innoccuous “grown men” quote got turned into such a cudgel!

I think he’s Incredibly talented and I think he’s incredibly passionate about winning for his Leafs

Not that everything will be straight forward from here on but it’ll be funny to think about the “Marner’s a baby! Trade that loser!” posts as he shows his worth.

There should be an app filter that allows people to screen when people come up with arguments that others are delusional or qualify their opinion as unbiased.
Would prefer to not even read such tripe.
Kucherov, Marner and Pasternk (and even Panarin) are fine hockey players. People prefering one or another is not delusional and I can say that with pure bias.
That said, there are aspects to each of their games that some people will see and notice and weigh differently while others will just weigh consensus to make such decisions.
At the end of the day, it doesn't matter. I'm a fan of Marner and there are days where I admire the crap out of the consistency of a guy like Mark Stone....a player who can have many better games than any of the RW's mentioned here. It isn't so clear cut.

Marner has scored more than 67 points in a season twice and 5X5 in playoffs turns into a perimeter player

But I’m reading he’s the second coming of Rick Middleton

With guys like Rantanen and Pastrnak out there I find it hard to understand how you couldn't even fathom the idea that Marner isn't 2nd best. I mean out of Kuch Rantanen Pasta and Marner... there's 1 name there that just doesn't quite have the same weight as the other 3.

Agree, Kucherov is firmly above the others ;)

Anyway I would rank him 3rd after Kuch, Rantanen but Pastrnak is also debatable of course.

It’s surprising Leafs fans are still in that Charlie Brown falling for Lucy’s football prank mode

As someone who’s second favorite team as a kid was Toronto and grew up watching Keon, Ellis, Henderson, Ullman, Pulford, Horton, Bower I am wondering can they win a round ?

I actually think and would bet yes - this is their year but they play Boston it’s ending there
