I don't even care for defending Kucherov, I'm just very pro- anything that makes the NHL look bad. No one likes the all star weekend, maybe if someone has the balls to show it, they'll make it better.

People unironically screaming “won’t somebody please think of the children!” about some all star game thing, when the post directly below this is about (another) scandal involving hockey people committing and then covering up sexual assault is quite a trip.

People can't think of both things?

The pearl clutching is hilarious.

The mocking of anybody mentioning how bad of a look it is and how it's bad for kids to see is wild to me. Nobody is saying that their retinas are forever burned with the imagery of Kucherov lazily skating around the rink like some of you want to make it seem.

This was a missed opportunity for the kids to have a little more fun, at an even designed to be fun for them, and this guy was actively trying to detract from that.

Imagine being forced to go to a little kid's birthday party, being upset you're there, so you try to make it shittier on purpose. That's what happened and he's an asshole for doing that.

Pretty sure the only thing Kucherov cares about right now is trying to help his team get home ice in the playoffs. And winning his 2nd Art Ross and smashing his previous career high would be nice too. He's not going to risk injury in a weekend that he sees as time off.
That event DID have a pretty high potential for injury…..

Really surprised WorkSafe didn’t intervene.

I am sensing a pattern with players from Russia not being fans of all star weekend.
I don't see that. I know Ovi is the example that people will cite, but younger Ovi was amazing for All Star Weekend. Probably the most fun player All Star Weekend has ever had. Between his one campaign to be selected last in the draft, his various antics in the breakaway challenges, and his competitiveness every year in hardest shot, he always had a good time and it was always fun for the fans. I certainly have fond memories watching him at the ASG as a kid. Of course, now that he's gotten older, and he's married and has a kid, his priorities have shifted. He. thinks he can use the week off, and I don't blame him. He was one of the few guys who always put in an effort to make ASG fun for the fans whenever he went.

It was more embarrassing to see McDavid going all out like this is game 7 of the Stanley Cup.
You know what is more embarrasing? Having your mascot being the only representative of your team at the Allstar game

I loved that most of the players were trying really hard this time to win. Made it way more entertaining. Maybe you're just not used to watching effort and skill on your team...

Yeah, I'm sure little kids were on the edge of their seats for that 2+ hour bore fest and Kuch half assing it ruined their night.

His base salary is only 5 million this year. That 5 million salary requires hundreds of hours of work to get paid out. This All-Star event was a 1 in 12 freeroll at 1 million (20%) more. The fact that he didn't even care enough to try and earn an extra 20% bonus for 2 hours of work is incredibly baller.

Kucherov made a mockery of the game last night. Imagine being one of the families who spent thousands on tickets so their kid can see their idol, and he shows up drunk and is barely even doing the events he’s in. Just gliding around being bad on purpose. Those kids are going to remember this for the rest of their lives. The kids with Kucherov jerseys were throwing them on the ice and booing him. If I were Bettman, first of all Kucherov is getting a drug test and if he has alcohol in his system he’ll be suspended for that too and maybe have to enter the player assistance program. I’d tell Kucherov he’s publically apologizing at center ice with a mic in hand to all of the fans for the spectical he made last night. If he doesn’t want to do that, he’s a healthy scratch for the ASG and will face the same suspension as if he refused to go. Maybe make the suspension a little longer because it would be an embarrassment for him to win the Art Ross after what he’s done.

The leagues leading scorer can’t pass to a large target? The leagues leading scorer can’t stick handle without the puck sliding all the way to the boards away from him? Can’t skate around those pylons? There are many players who would’ve loved to go participate in these festivities, and we have the leading scorer, the guy who was drafted FIRST OVERALL for this, treat the whole thing like a joke. To top it all off he waved and mocked the children in the crowd after he got boo’d, like the Grinch making fun of children after stealing their presents.

No one is freaking out. They're saying he's a dick.

Do you really think the All-Star game generates more money for the NHL than if they played a full slate of regular season games during that time?

He's an entertainer. No matter how important he may think his job is, he's not curing cancer or anything. Entertaining fans is his job.
He’s an NHL hockey player, not an entertainer. His job is to win games for the Tampa Bay Lightning, not entertain.

It’s a ‘game’ that generates a ton of money for the NHL, and takes more time, energy, and focus than a regular season game, yet for a fraction of the pay. You want Kucherov to try? Give him incentive to want to be there, rather than sitting on an island in The Keys like his buddy Stamkos.

Once again, nobody said it ruined their night.

So kids were at a boring event for 2+ hours that was supposed to be fun and Kucherov intentionally made it more boring. What a guy!

Great argument.

I think he's a genius.

I don't watch one second of this weekend. After seeing a few things I actually looked it up and watched.

So he turned me into a casual viewer of the all star weekend... Genius. Didn't think it was possible.

That’s the issue though, is people are putting it on Kucherov, when really it’s this joke All Star money grab NHL tournament setting up expectations and deflecting blame of low quality product onto the players.

It’s like customers getting mad at their Uber Driver instead of Uber over an issue that occurs by design.

You realize sports is literally about entertaining?
Yeah, that’s the NHL’s job, to put an entertaining product out there. It’s not the job of the players to be entertaining by default.

It occurred by choice not design.

It is wild how much players truly hate being selected as an All-Star

they want it for their resume in negotiating contracts.

but when they are told by their GM that they are selected as an All-Star, they react like they've been put on waivers

IMO part of the problem is these guys don’t have an opt out option. Their buddies are spending the week off on a beach in the Bahamas while they are compelled to attend a Mickey Mouse event in Toronto.
Some of these guys have to attend every single year. It would be nice if a player could choose to opt out if they’ve already attended 3 all star games or something of that nature.

If you're Crosby you get to just skip the draft night at least.
