I am sensing a pattern with players from Russia not being fans of all star weekend.
yup

some weird pride/macho thing, maybe they resent the whole performative dance monkey dance thing. These assholes don't appreciate what they have in the NHL, stay in Russia and play in that criminal league if you hate it here

Easily, more people watch, more sponsors. I didn't give a damn about skills competition and this weekend, but after everyone started complaining about Kucherov, I decided to watch, to find out what the hell happend. I suppose I'm not the only one who did this.
Sounds like a very sustainable model....

If you watch the KHL all star game/skills comp it is way more exciting, creative and they try way harder than in the NHL

IMO part of the problem is these guys don’t have an opt out option. Their buddies are spending the week off on a beach in the Bahamas while they are compelled to attend a Mickey Mouse event in Toronto.
Some of these guys have to attend every single year. It would be nice if a player could choose to opt out if they’ve already attended 3 all star games or something of that nature.
They have a collective bargaining agreement. They are entitled to negotiate it.

Last night I attended a hockey party where they were about 5-6 kids wearing Kucherov jerseys who were excited to see him play and show his skills. A couple of the kids actually took off his jersey and threw it lol

A lot of the parents and kids were quite upset at how he acted in the skills competition and didnt even bother trying, laughed about it and mocked fans.

What do you guys think? Most people at this party were saying even if he didnt want to be there he should have at least sucked it up and gave his fans what they wanted. A few of the kids were extremely upset by his actions and left very disappointed.

Seemed super selfish to me.

Thoughts?
On the contrary his skills comp performance inspired me to buy a Kucherov jersey

We will let McDavid try his hardest and go all out in a skills competition.

When it really matters, in playoffs, Kucherov is one of the best in the world.
Well McDavid also helped design the event, so maybe he just thought whatever, McDavid will win anyways and didn't give a shit. Or wanted to meme McDavid and the NHL.

He's sending a good message to kids that you should only put in effort when needed. Life is too short to always be stressing and worrying about pleasing others.
I mean its a better message than what Hockey Canada has been putting out recently.

Don’t need the speech on the NHL or sports being an entertainment product. The NHL is responsible for the entertainment of the product. Everybody’s role that is associated is different, and players’ roles are outlined in their contracts that are backed by a CBA. It is not Kucherov’s responsibility to entertain. Maybe morally to you, it seems.

I understand you were upset with Kucherov’s Marshawn Lynch approach. Hope the NHL can adopt more incentives so the competitions are a bit more lucrative for the players.

If Hollywood celebrities can suck it up and show up to movie premiere after premiere, press junkets that you know 1000% they hate doing answering the same dumb questions, a hockey player can suck it up and put in 15 minutes of effort at an All-Star weekend. It's not a big ask.

Sports are really nothing more than an entertainment product. Who is the Stanley Cup champion has no larger of a bearing on the universe than who is starring in the Barbie movie or who is the WWE wrestling champion, it's just an entertainment business. It's fans that assign importance to these things, they're otherwise fairly meaningless.

If you're lucky enough to be earning big money in an entertainment industry, it's not unreasonable to be asked to have some professionalism. That shouldn't have to be dictated to you, you should know better than that. No one's asking you to do back flips, just pretend you give a crap for a few minutes, no big deal.

It's amazing to me that the players don't get the concept of maximizing revenues. The Allstars game brings in millions in revenue of which the players get half.

They complain about not getting paid enough but do the bare minimum to grow revenues. They would rather not the exposure in the higher money making markets.

There is a reason other sports make more because the star players in those sports love and thrive in the limelight.

If players want to do something like that if they can’t opt out maybe give them an option of releasing a statement saying they won’t be putting in any effort as a way to opt out. I don’t think many players would want to put out a statement like that and it would minimize chances of something like this happening again

I expect they'll work something out in future CBAs where guys with more time in the league can opt out of the ASG given some conditions. Would make it if you're pre RFA status you cannot opt out. A guy like Kucherov can probably do so every other year maybe,

Why didn't he just go on the IR for a month or two and skip the event? Could bring in a nice complementary piece to the team for that length of time too depending on their salary.
