He looked like someone who was forced to do something that he didn't want to do, which is exactly what was happening...

A big complaint about the ASG is that it looks rehearsed, kiddyish, fake. Kucherov goes out there and gives a genuine reaction instead of putting on a facade like a bunch of other players and he's now the most hated man in Canada. Maybe don't force players to show up?

Love or hate Kucherov, he's not going to BS you.
Kiddyish? Hockey is a kid's game and he's paid millions to play it for a living for the fans. The least he can do is be professional about it and not shit on the hand that feeds him.

Guy was just embarassing himself thinking he's doing us all a favor for being alive. Felt like a brat trying to oppose daddy for not buying him what he wants.

Last night I attended a hockey party where they were about 5-6 kids wearing Kucherov jerseys who were excited to see him play and show his skills. A couple of the kids actually took off his jersey and threw it lol

A lot of the parents and kids were quite upset at how he acted in the skills competition and didnt even bother trying, laughed about it and mocked fans.

What do you guys think? Most people at this party were saying even if he didnt want to be there he should have at least sucked it up and gave his fans what they wanted. A few of the kids were extremely upset by his actions and left very disappointed.

Seemed super selfish to me.

Thoughts?
Yeah. If the skills comp was voluntary...he should have just sat out.

I cannot argue with one single thing in this post.

He's always had an edge to him. Not sure he thought this one through though. The optics are really poor now that I've had a night to sit on it.

The Internet will defend anything and everything, yikes.

Kucherov showed he has no humility or gratitude. Fans pay your salary, you don’t have to go balls out but to blatantly blow this off in front of everyone is very disrespectful. If the Hart race is close between MacKinnon and him, I think this will guarantee he doesn’t win. What a total douche.

Kuch clearly enjoys being the bad guy, and that’s his right. Sports need heroes and villains. I love his antics.

Bedard is 18 years old. Such a bizarre criticism of him.
What's so bizarre about finding that interview boring? I'm sure all the players have personalities when the cameras aren't on, which is natural. Obviously it's a criticism of hockey culture in general.

IMO part of the problem is these guys don’t have an opt out option. Their buddies are spending the week off on a beach in the Bahamas while they are compelled to attend a Mickey Mouse event in Toronto.
Some of these guys have to attend every single year. It would be nice if a player could choose to opt out if they’ve already attended 3 all star games or something of that nature.
Awwwwww, tough shit. You're making millions a year. Suck it up and represent your team and the league for a couple days.

He’s done so 5 times now.

The NHL is selling a product. The product will be better if you have guys at the game who actually want to be there. I can’t blame him at all for not wanting to be, these events are generally terrible.

He can suck it up. Fans are there to see him. He can sulk in his hotel room.

Kucherov the GOAT.

The ASG should be voluntary.

Why stop there, press interviews can be voluntary, dress code voluntary... etc. etc.

No one gets a job where they generally love 100% of the aspects of it, you think even cushy movie and music stars like every bit of promotion they are forced to do?

If you're being a bigger drama queen than them as an athlete, I think you probably need to check yourself.

Promotion is part of the entertainment business and you are in the entertainment business, you are not doing anything actually important like curing cancer or running into burning buildings to save people, so maybe bring the self importance down a notch.

And yet here you are, throwing a temper tantrum over the skills contest.

I think of the all star game as being similar to the red carpet for movie premiers. Even if you don’t want to be there it is a chance for positive publicity, to show the fans some love, and that type of stuff. It’s a bad choice to act like you don’t want to be there as it reflects poorly. Just suck it up

No we can definitely stop at the ASG being voluntary and review all those other suggestions on their own merits later.

The NHL can promote its league with young stars who want to be there and want the personal exposure.

How about voluntary payment from team owners that don't feel like paying? Oh bring that up and the players rear ends would tighten up real fast.

If you are in the entertainment business, which is all that Kucherov is in (sorry dude, you're not a NASA astronaut or fire fighter, or someone who actually does anything really important, the outcome of NHL games matters about as much as the outcome of a WWE wrestling match in the grand scheme of things) ... then you have promotional responsibilities like any other entertainment business.

All entertainers do some promotional shit they don't want to do, you think Ryan Gosling or Brad Pitt want to do press junket number 30 answering some stupid questions in the 10th city they've been in for the last week? No. They don't like doing that either. Do you think every boxer or MMA fighter likes doing promotion for their fights? Probably a bunch of them don't. They do it anyway.

Pretend you give a crap for the few minutes a camera is on you, it's not a big ask.

Any player can skip the ASG by getting suspended one game. Has been optional for a long time. Something something joke about Tampa already being familiar with faking injuries etc.

I don't think we're on the same page. I'm not saying Kucherov should be able to do everything he wants all the time. I'm saying the ASG should be voluntary.

It's not voluntary, so tough shit if you're a player. Just like press junkets are not voluntary for boxers and MMA fighters, press and premieres are not voluntary for movie stars, promotion is not voluntary for music stars, etc. etc. etc.

It's part of your job in the entertainment business, and that's all you are essentially. An entertainer.

Sorry that you weren’t amply entertained. Let it be a life lesson that you don’t always get what you want.

Totally agree. Spoilt baby syndrome is strong in that one.

He deserved every boo that rained down on him. I hope he was uncomfortable with the ‘adulation’.
