Is Keefe really the problem?

Coming off a brutal 6-4 loss to Buffalo with many parts of the team underperforming, today's practice will need to be one that gets through to the players. Perhaps that's part of Doan's presence, to lend credibility to the efforts of the coaching staff.

With the team in turmoil during games recently, there has been a welcome sight at Leafs practices. It may not always be a good thing when the front office is attending practice, but when the executive is Shane Doan on the ice, it doesn't feel like a bad thing. Doan joined the team as a Special Advisor to GM Brad Treliving this summer and happens to have an excellent relationship with both Auston Matthews and Matthew Knies, due to the Arizona connection.

I have to say, it's cool to see the Leafs' Special Advisor to the GM be so in-touch with the players, and still able to rip around the ice taking shots.

Keefe had these same issues when he didn't have this 4th line so how is that on Brad? In fact, the same exact issues that we had under Dubas are still happening and Dubas is now gone so I wonder who the issue possibly could be.

Bert, Domi, Reaves, Klingberg, Gregor are known commodities. Tre brought them in to add a different dimension to the team. They have failed to do so. Either (a) Keefe has not adapted his strategy to take advantage of their historical strengths, or (b) they have failed to adapt their play to Keefe's strategy. Good coaches adapt their strategy to make best use of their players. We have seen time and again that Keefe fails to adapt his strategy to his players and to the other team's play. We call this being out-coached. Lafferty is a good example. High expectations when he came here because of play in Chi. Did not meet expectations here. Different story in Van.

I'm not sure if he's the problem. What i am sure of is that, like the core 4, he's not the answer for this team. Keefe could be the answer with a team that is built to play hardnose grind them down hockey. We won't know that unless he ends up on a team with that identity. Just like the core 4 who could individually be absorbed into a similarly structured team and possibly become playoff heroes there.
I honestly hope we find out soon how all these guys fare on other teams.

Seeing kampf go out there to start overtime reminds me of Babcock sending out Komarov while Matthews sat on the bench.
Do people even pay attention? Keefe was using Matthews and Marner first up and we kept losing. Our record in OT started to improve when he started playing Kampf first.
I see we are at the point of blaming the coach for everything.

Keefe keeps proving he's not up to the job. I have to believe Shanahan overruled Treliving to keep him around, or Treliving is more of an idiot than I thought.

His dad’s buddy got him an easy make-work job, I doubt there’s any overruling involved when the pitch for the position was to avoid rocking the boat and just trim around the edges for a few seasons.

He is one of the problems but it is deeper than that. A major part is the poor cap distribution that Dubas set up. Dubas tried for 5 years to make it work with very little success. Now comes Tre with a lot of pressure to try and fix it and he has totally blown it.
I put most of the responsibility on Shanny. If they can’t turn this year around and go deep in the playoff Shanny, Tre and Keef should be gone and an “on the fly rebuild should take place but the problem is Will most likely will get signed and Marner/Tavares cannot be traded so we either have to resign them thus continue the nightmare or lick our wounds and let them walk for nothing. Either way we are looking at best a retool and at worst a rebuild.
Tre was in a tough spot - but at least he was smart enough to only committ to one year deals on the fix ... You have to remember there wasnt much out there available to sign ... The mess lies on Dubas shoes

I'm definitely not a stats guy so you could very well be right but doesn't Matthews have a higher FO% this year and they were pretty close to even last year? Maybe I'm looking in the wrong place. It seems like a gamble to me having your franchise center who is also an awesome defensive player on the bench when they're both at least relatively close in faceoffs.

Everything trickles down from the ownership and Shanahan. The culture completely eroded when Lou was fired. Dumbass, Keefe, and the core were ultimately enabled by the top. Failed rebuild.

The sad thing is that the nightmare won’t end because we all know that MLSE needs to create the next generation of season ticketholders. Of course winning is the best thing for business, but why not just settle for the flashy approach. Anyone can throw the check book around. They did it once in 2018, it’s already started again with Matthews. It’s too bad that the core love money so much because MLSE doesn’t have the courage to lead themselves so this pathetic process will continue until they retire.

Hiring an apprentice GM put them in this spot.

They have some good players that keep them competitive but the roster makeup makes it impossible to be a legit Cup contender. What makes it worse it‘s the same holes every year.
Coaching is one of those holes.
Dubas deserves a bunch of blame but he is far from the only one.
Lou drafted terribly with his picks outside the first round and left us saddled with a few terrible contracts to non core players.
Dubas’s roster was much too top heavy at the worst possible time with the flat cap. And though I think he drafted well overall his picks lacked some diversity and he traded too many futures for rentals and short term fixes.
Treliving is still very early in his tenure but so far he leaves a lot to be desired. His moves have shown no tendency for an understanding of team building or that he understands the modern game and where it is headed.
And Shanahan himself is the architect of the whole thing. They were all his hires and while we don’t know exactly how much influence he has over individual roster moves he absolutely dictates the direction they move in.

Didn't we have Spezza in almost the same role who was more in touch with the team and less removed from the game... not that it really matters.

Our window to win was the last few years and yes I believe Keefe was a big reason we had little success. Dubas a huge reason as well.

But with Matthews getting 13.5 next year. I'd say our window to win will be all but closed.

Matthews at 13.5, needs to be re-upped again in 4 years.
Nylander at 10.5 😂
Marner at God knows what. 8 years will cost more than Matthews.

And we are supposed to believe this will win. It’s not even like they are playoff performers who just win games. It’s Bizarro World.

Keefe has done a few things over the years that bothered me but I really don't know how good of a hockey coach he is. But the easiest major change you can make to a team is replace the coach,. I would have done it over the summer.

Can someone please explain to me what this monocle meme is all about?

So all these people (seems to be a lot of Pittsburgh fans for some reason) use the monocle thing because someone said Tie Domi, Esq(uire)? I actually hope you're right because that's hilarious.

I didn’t know about that, but I had this name since way back then.
