Is Jimmy Vesey Completely Useless?

He is 27 and a winger ... and outside of a couple hits in game after he was spoken too there has been nothing ... we are wasting $200,000 here in CAP ... this experiment should end when Simmonds get back ... I think Brooks might be better now ... Engval is far and away better then Vesey right now ... Engval is bigger and faster and can lug puck out of our end when we get in trouble

It's too bad. I honestly thought he would raise to the occasion this year.

What I don't get is why did so many people lose their minds over him when he was a free agent? I mean, guys like me can't spot flaws in one's game that easily (like skating style and edge work), but how did the experts not see his issues?

I'm assuming with Matthews hopefully back tomorrow, Vesey will be sitting. I thought that was the plan before it was decided that Matthews wouldn't play last night.

Enough already with this guy , he’s been given more than enough chances up and down the lineup and has shown nothing , time to give someone else a shot and see what f they can add something even if it’s just as an energy player like Barabaniv .

Can't say I didn't have some reservations about adding three ex-Sabres to the Leafs as a way to 'upgrade' but a healthy Simmonds and Bogosian have been great.

Vesey, yeah, you're right about that one.

from a guy who started the year off on the second line he has not been surpassed by pretty much all forwards. He is the first to go when simmonds comes back
if petan knew how to backcheck even a little , vesey would be on the taxi squad

He's one of the best PKers in the league right now. Probably a good thing when you are not noticing him on the PK.

He is not impactful at 5-on-5 right now (meaning he is not doing anything good, but is also not a liability), but the thing is that nobody really deserves to draw in over him right now. Barabanov, outside of his past few games, has been worse than Vesey. Petan has been solid but doesn't provide special teams. Sabourin sucks. Robertson, Brooks, and Anderson benefit more from the Marlies right now. We can re-evaluate once Simmonds and Matthews are fully healthy but as of right now, Vesey has provided enough PK value to keep him in the lineup.

When we’re 100% heathy, I don’t think he plays. Matthews, Marner, Tavares, Nylander, Thornton, Hyman, Kerfoot, Mikheyev, Simmonds, Engvall, Spezza, Boyd as the top 12 forwards. Vesey, Barabanov, Petan, Anderson, Brooks and Robertson vying for injury replacement spots. Nice depth - 18 guys who are serviceable in an NHL forwards spot.

If I had to guess at lines, I’d go:

Thornton - Matthews - Marner
Hyman - Tavares - Nylander
Mikheyev - Kerfoot - Simmonds
Boyd - Engvall - Spezza

Though you could mix and match those 12 in all sorts of ways.
