Is Jimmy Vesey Completely Useless?

Meaning does he bring anything that a random replacement level player can't bring? Maybe a slightly above average scoring touch around the net (that he hasn't made much use of this season)?

He made a really good defensive play tonight and other than his two goals, it's the only thing he's done all year that I can recall.

That you can attempt, pathetically, to excuse your question of value "is he completely useless" ... you have exceeded every real appreciation of a player who has laced up the skates in the NHL.

May I ask, what level of competency have you achieved while lacing up the skates?

Oh, oh...oh, despicable comment.

To fit into the starting 12 forwards on a team with (arguably) legit Cup aspirations, you have to bring something. Goals, strong playmaking, special teams skill, energy, physicality, whatever.

So far Vesey hasn't really showed that he excels in any area, he's just sort of there. Or, to put in another way, on a given night if you were asked to put together a highlight reel of his play, hits, goals, strong breakout, solid forecheck, takeaways, blocked shots, anything noteworthy ... You'd probably have your work cut out for you.

I'd put him on the fourth line for now and give someone else a shot on the 3rd line. Nothing really to lose as it would be difficult for his replacement to contribute less, right?

Hopefully Manny told him ... look here Jimmy this is da end of your tryout here ... your next game is your last one here if this keeps up ... we need you to drill a few defensemen and turn over a few pucks tonight and take puck hard to net at risk to yourself ... then be first guy back on back check on every shift ... otherwise you can pack up your stuff from your locker after game ... it is time for a come to Jesus discussion

Jimmy's not a liability at least, but he doesn't do much with the puck that's for sure.

He was always an extra for me coming in, an insurance policy, but with all of Thornton simmonds Spezza Boyd playing well (and Robertson looking good in the ahl) vesey seems to be the obvious loser of the Bubble Battle.

At least he was better than Barabanov, I guess.

lmao...

Jesus, calm the f*** down. This is a discussion board about NHL players. That comment upsets you that much? Have you read other people's comments on here? Players are ripped to shreds, denigrated and demeaned constantly.

I have never claimed to be a professional hockey player, nor do I need to be one to know that Vesey isn't very good at the NHL level.

Please don’t compare the body of work and consistent point producer with a bad start to a 3rd line center that should be 4th line centre
Please
Don't forget constant being on the ice for more goals against then for. Yes he can mail in a performance and still come up point per game. He's skilled, we all know that. But scoring isn't winning when the other team outscores you. Keefe isn't letting him cheat this year and forcing him to be defensively responsible and he clearly looks lost doing so. Kind of reminds me when Russ Courtnall went to Montreal after being in Toronto, he didn't have a clue about this defense thing. Keefe is clearly pushing this team be a better two-way team. There is so much devotion to offense, but without defense you can't win. When we're judging Vesey, we have to look at both his offense and defense. He's 21st on the team in rate of Giveaways, 14th on Takeaways. He's in the top 8 for hits and blocked-shots among the forwards... yeah he could do more and be better. When you see someone like Malhotra talking to him, it might be more about how to play even better defensively and none of the coaching staff is too concerned about the scoring.

Only 5:30 of 5v5 time for him tonight. If he wasn't on the PK (second most minutes), he probably would be sitting by now.

And I mean he's been demoted, coaches have talked to him.....and he still provides very little

He provides very little offensively... the rest of his game is decent.. but at the end of the day, you want guys who can contribute at putting the puck in the net.

Jimmy Vesey doesn't need to score. Right now, his 6'3" frame is hitting at a rate between Matthews and Tavares.
If he showed some hell bent for leather passion, he has a job. He can fall off the roster for doing nothing and not be missed.
Or he can possibly even get hurt, but have the team wanting him back. Any concept of him being a top-6 are long gone.
3rd line by the skin of his teeth. Most likely spot a rotating forgettable 4th line forward. If he takes 1/2 a tablet of
a Darcy Tucker-pill, he's put on a pedestal. There's no reason he can't out compete and out compassion-play Pierre Engvall.

Not completely useless imo.

Would I take him over Petan? Sure. Would I take him over Engvall? For the money he makes, absolutely.

He has size, he’s not bad defensively, if he can find a little scoring touch and chemistry on the 4th line I can see him hanging around. If not, he’ll be gone in a trade or the taxi squad soon

Playing with Nylander and Tavares, he had decent advanced stats, even if he wasn’t producing goals himself, but now he is only above Spezza in expected +-, and is middle of the pack in corsi/fenwick and dropping.

He is constantly flubbing passes/shots and doesn’t even really use his big body to be useful. He’s basically shoveling a path for Galchenyuk to take over his spot.

he definitely has a career in the NHL, but I don't know if he has a long-term fit on this team - by long-term, I mean the rest of this season let alone next season. Who sits when Simmonds and Hyman come back? It isn't clear cut that Vesey makes it above Engvall.

also goes to show how ridiculous some of the previous comments were - that Vesey was going to be better than Nylander and that signing him would have made Hyman obsolete.

Raw hit totals don’t accurately represent how effective a player is physically. Let’s not forget that Gauthier was among the hit leaders here. Vesey is a warm body.

The only case for Vesey is that he doesn’t get manhandled/outmuscled and provides decent defensive play without hurting you. So, essentially Par Lindholm, who I compared him to pre-signing.

That’s a waiver caliber player. Agostino, for instance, can bring that or close to it. I’d like to see one of Vesey/Barabanov flipped for a mid-late round pick (or waived/out-clause if no interest), but not both. Keep one on the outside looking in for injury insurance.

Wasn't Vesey the guy that would make Nylander expendable a couple years ago?
Was that button? Are the posters who supported that idea still of that mind now?

He'd be fine on the 4th line tbh. Can kill penalties and isnt a liability on D. We just need an upgrade on him, which we'll hopefully get once Simmonds returns and see someone like Boyd force the coaches hand. People are thinking a bit too hard here over a league minimum winger.
