Is Jimmy Vesey Completely Useless?

O
Why isn't Robertson in the lineup in place of him?

Robertson has played 1 game in the AHL (yesterday), and, he's fully healthy.
Call him up, lets see how he looks with JT and Nylander.
Obviously Keefe doesn’t want to play him so Dubas sent him to the Marlies rather then sit all year

And this is the problem with Dubus. Why would we pick up Vesey, when we have an abundance of 3-4th line guys. Seriously, this guys skill set is that of Gauthier, but with a bit more skill. Big guy, but plays the softest game. Dude failed at playing on the Sabres, yet we sign him and put him on the 2nd line?

Team still has no grit. We have 1 guy and he's hurt.

Because we could, and it didn't really cost us anything to do it.

Leafs had/have 5 bonafide top 6 forwards; plus:
-Mikheyev who had played 5 games in the past year, coming off a very small 39 game sample size, and major injury.
-Simmonds coming off a couple of rough years and battling injuries.
-Thornton at 41 years old
-Robertson with 1 professional game experience.

They took the approach of "throw a bunch of #### against the wall, and see what sticks". It's not like they could have taken Vesey's $900k, Thornton's $750k, Mikheyev's $1.6m and gone out and spent $3.25m on a winger.

Maybe you could have taken $2m and spent it on somebody else plus a replacement-contract, dropping Mikheyev & Vesey.... but of course it was hard to walk away from the potential that Mikheyev showed.

Yes, he's the same player as another Jimmy that used to be in the Leafs system and went to college, Jimmy Hayes.

He is like lots of guys EXCEPT he gets getting chances based on his University results.
Should be a 13th forward type. In and out of the lineup. Does not have the shift to shift motivation to succeed.
Almost like he is all hockey'd out. He was a big deal and now he isn't. Two ways to go. All in or part in. He so far has chosen part way in.

on a team that needs to be heavier up front you can't be 6'3 and soft....was same issue with gauthier for me

Vesey is basically a spare part who is making league minimum. He will never initiate anything and doesn't use his size or speed. At best he could finish a few plays around the net. I suspect he will be replaced by a Galchenyuk like player.

The bigger concern would be Alex Kerfoot who somehow forgot to play hockey after leaving Colorado. The random icings and bad penalties are just continuous with him. He's a good skater but beyond that doesn't give you much.

The leafs "4th line" with Spezza and Boyd has been better than the "3rd line" on most nights.

I’m sure he’s a great person.

seems like a spare part on our team. He hasn’t added much spark yet. Hopefully he will.

Has not found a way to make a case for himself in NHL ... really not a great skater, not a great shooter, not a great passer, not a forechecker, not a backchecker, not a fighter, not great on defense, ok on offense, does not pay price on walls/net front ... essentially he does nothing really well ... but he can keep up and linger around ... it is only a matter of time before he exits team to Marlies to finish up his Leaf career ... Simmonds Robertson both take is spot easy ... Engval already has

Not really. Dubas did send him to the Marlies

It's not a permanent thing though. They just want Robertson to play more than a couple of games before bringing him back to the Leafs. He played 2 minutes before getting hurt. We don't need to rush him back.

Stick a fork in him, hes done.
Make Galchenyuk the new reclamation project. At least hes produced at a high level at some point in his career.

I agree it’s not permanent but I do think he deserves a shot.
Make Nylander a healthy scratch and put him in

Just outscoring at a better rate then $11 million/year Tavares and killing penalties, no big deal.

TO's PKing is near bottom of the league so being a PKer and being good at it are 2 different things.

Before the beginning of last year TO signed 3 players, Kappy, Johnsson and Kerfoot, for around $3.5 mil per, 2 are gone for very little in return and the other is rumored to be a part in any trade that might upgrade the lineup because he's overpaid for what he contributes.

What has he done in his career for you to believe he'll create a spark. This is who he is, a meh player

There are plenty of Vessey's to go around. Would he make the Tempa team last year? or St.Louis the year before?
The answer is no. So if we want to compete, we have to get rid of players like him
