Is Jimmy Vesey Completely Useless?

Thank god it finally happened ... Vesey has size and can skate but that's about it ... would rather try some other guys who have not had a shot yet to see what they can bring to team ... even petan can make da odd pass to create something good

what happened,?????,he played tonight

I think he’s been the definition of “okay” lately. Making some decent plays, not really hurting the team, but can’t expect much offense. He hasn’t bothered me.

I think this is just a case of missed expectations. He’s shown flashes of goal scoring in the past and people thought maybe the Leafs would bring that back out of him (me included). Looks like that’s not going to happen but that’s okay. That’s why he makes $900k.

The GM and coach of the team constantly tinkering with the makeup of the team is not the same thing as the unseemly tendency of us fans to incessantly pick at the perceived weakest elements of the team.
it's exactly the same thing outside of the small detail that what we say has no bearing on the moves the team makes , lol

And you know what he played his best game I have seen him play ... throwing hits .. making safe plays ... he even got moved up lineup ... well done Vesey ... must have been his last life ... can he sustain that level of play?

Galchenyuk should get a look before Simmonds is back. Vesey was fine last game but if you need to scratch him to get a look at another option you do it.

A forward needs to come out when Matthews re joins the group...Bye Bye Vesey

I’m probably in the minority, but while I agree Vesey has been awful offensively, I feel without the puck he’s been pretty good plus PK’ing as well. To me once Matthews comes back we would need to see him vs Barabanov on that 4th line cause Barabanov cannot be given the mins he appears to be getting now and I’m not sure he’s better then Vesey in that 4 th line role. Once Simmonds comes back though, then to me both Vesey and Barabanov are out. And once Robertson steps in (I’m not sure Leafs will promote him yet but if it happens) then I think Boyd comes out:

So I see something like:

Thornton-Tavares-Marner
Kerfoot-Matthews-Nylander
Hyman-Engvall-Mikehyev
Simmonds-Spezza-Robertson

Galchenyuk or Robertson might have to prove some defensive prowess before they're put in over Vesey.
The Leafs didn't lose to any one individual Columbus player, it was their systematic defensive system that
shut the Leafs down. They can't be playing doing their own thing and have this system work. Once they're
adapt at playing as part of a team that shut down the Oilers two games straight, then and only then should
they brought in.

Completely disagree.

While Columbus was an insanely good defensive team during the regular season(and had the stats to back it up), they were also had some really bad defensive stats in that series.

63.52 Corsi Against/60 (5th worst out of 24 teams)
34.2 shots given up per/60 (5th worst out of 24 teams)
32.21 Scoring chances given up/60 (2nd worst out of 24 teams)

Bottom 5 certainly isnt that great. The only thing that gives what you outlined some support is that they had:

11.04 High Danger chances/60 (8th worst out of 24 teams)
2.59 xGA/60 (10th worst out of 24 teams)

So instead of bottom 5, they were merely below average when it came up to giving up chances in the highest danger zones.

Theres only one really positive underlying stat in the whole series for Columbus....
Team save %: 94.71 (3rd out of 24 teams)

....and its actually even more impressive when you look at the stats above it.

Series was reasonably close on play front ... we got outgoalied plain and simple ... our guy gave up a housel league goal in game 1 at start of 3rd period ... bingo LOSS

Let’s not forget that our goalies have been spectacular in the last 2 games 0 friken goals against help quite a bit I think

Pretty much.....and Tampa had its hands full with a lesser Jackets team too until their goaltending finally cooled down in the 4th game of their series...but not before Korpisalo set the NHL record for saves in a game.

Thats not a good D that set that record.

to be fair I think they did shut down our PP pretty well.

But we also didn't have Nylander half way down the ice expecting Bog to make a Kaberle-like outlet either. Saves made by a goalie is a worst statistics then +/- sometimes.

the only reason we didn't get blown out in game 1 was because of our goaltending

Yea, they did a decent job as we only had the 14th best Goals/60 on the PP in the Play-ins.....but you know who really shut out PP down?

The refs.

Despite all of our possession, shots and scoring chances, the Leafs had the 22nd fewest TOI/GP out of 24 teams (4:24 per game). Funny how that always seems to happen.

Oh, and the Leafs also never gave up a goal on the PK either.

Got goalied 5 on 5 pretty hard and couldn't draw enough calls to make it up on the PP. Could have used the double the minutes on the PP teams like Edmonton, Vancouver and Colorado were getting.

Dont mean to get into complaining about refs but it is ridiculous how few calls this team gets sometimes. The Matthews drawn penalty stats compared with other star players is almost obscene.

Disagree it was a fairly close game and kill zone chances were slightly in our favour ... and our goalie F***D it up huge
the score was close but the game wasn't and Andy was the player who kept the score close

at the end of the day our goalie played more than good enough that series for us to beat a mediocre team like the Jackets
