Is Jimmy Vesey Completely Useless?

Maple Leafs Notebook: Gut-check time for Jimmy Vesey - Sportsnet.ca

Jimmy Vesey finally snuffed out his 13-game point drought Saturday night, but it certainly feels like a case of too little, too late.

For his first time as a Toronto Maple Leaf, the 27-year-old winger could be a healthy scratch Monday — and it’ll be up to the player to claw his way back into the lineup he’s gradually descended.

Among the lessons rookie general manager Kyle Dubas learned the hard way in 2020 — proven defensive defencemen are worth the cap hit; better to have too many leaders in the room; depth in net is essential — was this:

When introducing new faces to your roster, put them in a place to succeed.

Memorably, that didn’t happen with 2019-20’s prized acquisition, Tyson Barrie, who suffered a confidence crisis early, and Dubas owned some of that.

So, in assembling this 2020-21 Leafs team, Dubas’s new free agent signings — Joe Thornton, Wayne Simmonds, T.J. Brodie, Zach Bogosian, and Vesey — were handed important and specific roles. Expectations were outlined in detail by coach Sheldon Keefe.

On his third franchise in three seasons, Vesey took a pay cut ($900,000) knowing his future as an NHLer could depend on how he performed in Toronto. Dubas and Keefe did their best to give the Boston native a running start, placing him to the left of John Tavares and William Nylander in the top six.

Vesey scored on a wild opening night versus Montreal, and things looked promising. For a minute.

Despite Toronto’s injury woes, Vesey has played his way down the bench… to the point where he may not be on it.

Vesey’s glaring mistakes may be minimal but so are his impact shifts.

On the league’s No. 2-ranked offensive squad, Vesey’s two goals and two assists over 22 games rank him 16th in Leafs scoring. On nine of his past 11 outings, Vesey has registered one shot or zero shots on net. Four times in February his ice time was chopped to less than 10 minutes. And prior to assisting on Jason Spezza’s vintage goal Saturday, Vesey was mired in a 13-game point drought in which he was minus-6.

Vesey is solid on the PK and defensively but I think at this point a player like Engvall offers more value sad to say. I really like how Barbonov has been progressing.

I think it may be time to give others a shot to play in Vesey's spot. I have been asking for Agostino since they acquired him. Would like to see him on the 4th line next to Boyd and Spezza for a few games.

When I saw Vesey's giveaway (to McDavid!) last game, this was my reaction:

I simply don't see him playing another game this season when we're healthy. He's brought nothing to the table other than being a decent pker. If he only made smart, safe decisions, I think I could live with him on the 4th in years when we didn't have depth. But he doesn't, and we do have depth.

I still like the approach that Dubas took this offseason, throw a bunch of affordable contracts against the wall and see what sticks. Vesey could have bloomed late, every now and again someone does. If he does this every year, signs a post-hype sleeper kind of guy and promises him some ice time to get him to sign an affordable deal, I'm good with that. Most will do what Vesey has finally done here, but if we get one affordable Hyman level player out of it the approach will have worked.

Thank god it finally happened ... Vesey has size and can skate but that's about it ... would rather try some other guys who have not had a shot yet to see what they can bring to team ... even petan can make da odd pass to create something good

I dunno I still sort of believe in the guy. I really appreciate the fact that he doesn’t take unnecessary risks or make bonhehead plays that give away chances.

I admit he’s a much more valuable asset when playing with the lead then when down a goal or tied, but we’ve got a good team so it makes sense to me that he has a role.

Wont break my heart if the team moves on, but i still have some hope left that he’s a bit above a replacement level player and his contract is as good as it gets.

If he was a plus player and could eat minutes yes but he is worst minus on team (even lower than Spezz) even though team is a plus team ... bottom line when he is on da ice da team gives up more goals against than goals for ... that is not a defensive specialist ... and he does not contribute to our offense ... his time is up ... he has been warned and he can't make it happen

When we’re 100% heathy, I don’t think he plays. Matthews, Marner, Tavares, Nylander, Thornton, Hyman, Kerfoot, Mikheyev, Simmonds, Engvall, Spezza, Boyd as the top 12 forwards. Vesey, Barabanov, Petan, Anderson, Brooks and Robertson vying for injury replacement spots. Nice depth - 18 guys who are serviceable in an NHL forwards spot.

If I had to guess at lines, I’d go:

Thornton - Matthews - Marner
Hyman - Tavares - Nylander
Mikheyev - Kerfoot - Simmonds
Boyd - Engvall - Spezza

Though you could mix and match those 12 in all sorts of ways.

I'd just like to say Robertson is playing himself out of a spot in the AHL. Not saying he isn't a good player and it isn't even just his play Robertson immaturity really shows when he takes dumb penalties

Think something has to be said for the value of the 'meh' factor. Personally I don't necessarily want someone 'exciting' when defending a lead.
Vesey has provided plenty of 'meh', and maybe a little too much. The Leafs aren't going places because their offense is improving, it's because
the team isn't taking shortcuts, they're playing better defense. (Think Tavares and Nylander have constantly cheated for offense and they look
out of place on a team that's starting to systematically be able to shut down the opposition and get the puck out of their own zone.) The question
going forward, who can make an impact offensively, defensively, and physically when required? Think Vesey and his competition have to hit
at least two of those marks pretty good in order to win a job. The fact Vesey is only credited with 3 takeaways kind of shows his passive nature.
It's too back because I was really hoping he'd channel his inner Zack Hyman.

If anything he shows how far weve come, when the worst player on the team is steadily moving down the lineup to a negligible role, rather than being stubbornly forced into a large role due to babcock (Marleau, Zaitsev, Gardiner) or lack of other options (Ceci, Barrie).

As far as completely useless players go, could do alot worse than Jimmy Vesey

Well at least he looked like he was willing to drop the gloves at the end of that Oilers game.

So there's something

Vesey is an ok 4th liner but should not be in once we are healthy. He is good defensively but he brings less offence than any other forward on the team. Well maybe other than engvall
