Him leaving concerns me because he has Dolan’s ear. He always deferred to Glen, for right or wrong, on anything hockey related. Who knows how the next person in his role gets along with Jim and how it impacts hockey ops.

Sather will always be looked at with a lot of negativity for things he did during his tenure here but I can’t help but think of the saying that the devil you know is better than the devil you don’t.

Sather is powerful because the James Dolan of the Knicks and the James Dolan of the Rangers are two completely different owners.

I prefer this Dolan lol

I'm not concerned with Dolan b/c he doesn't think he's knowledgeable about hockey enough to run the Rangers, whereas he legitimately thinks he's smart enough about basketball to try and run the Knicks.

Sather will still be around to be in Dolan's ear, but I'm not concerned with this.

I expect the new President will either be a) a PR/figurehead type like Graves or b) Gorton will be promoted to Exec VP hockey and Drury will become GM. A two headed hockey structure similar to the Chicago Cubs. They would then have an Exec VP Business.

Sather, who will work closely with Garden chairman Jim Dolan on the search for the Rangers’ president that will begin immediately, said that he hoped to have a successor in place “by July 1, but if we could do it by the [June 21-22] draft, that would be great.

“I can recommend the guy, but it’s Jim’s choice in the end.”

Sather also told The Post that Jeff Gorton’s job is safe as general manager.

“I wouldn’t be doing this if our management was in chaos,” said the 75-year-old Sather, who has had a steady full-time job in hockey since turning pro in 1964-65 with the CPHL Memphis Wings. “I think Jeff has done a hell of a job. Look at some of the deals he’s made. Jeff is not the kind of guy who misses very much. He built that team in Boston that went on to win the Cup.

“Our coaching staff communicates well and teaches, David [Quinn] has done an outstanding job bringing these young kids along. Chris [Drury, assistant GM] has been outstanding. We’ve got a group that works hard, communicates well. It was a very difficult decision for me, but I made it knowing that we’re in good hands.”

Brooks doesn't like Gorton.

That said, the new sheriff in town will ultimately be the judge of that. When, for instance, Brendan Shanahan became president of the Maple Leafs in April of 2014, he retained general manager Dave Nonis and coach Randy Carlyle for one season before replacing them with Lou Lamoriello and Mike Babcock, respectively.

Things will change, perhaps even dramatically, if not immediately.

Gorton should be the successor.

Or Leetch. Or Mark Hardy.

If these guys didn't play for the Rangers, what exact qualifications would they have for the job?

Well JD has actual experience in a FO role, including the role that they'd be looking to fill so yeah there is that. Graves has been a part of the organization forever and already knows whats going on, what they have and where they're at.

Messier and Richter? Yeah those guys don't really fit the bill. Messier in particular should be kept far, far away.

A lot of these teams have business guys as their team president. It’s not a hockey guy. The business guy represents team at the BOG meetings.

I'm a St. John's graduate and already have to deal with the Chris Mullin nostalgia hire. I don't need that for the Rangers.

These guys were beloved players and people want to walk them down a plank for a job that have zero qualifications for.

I meant to mention that I was omitting JD.

Graves has been in the org, but in a much different role.

This is a job that Messier is even less qualified for than Head Coach.

JD is someone at least to me looks like he'd be completely on board with what has been going on here and wont push his own ideas. Also Idk why people think Gorton would give up GM duties at this time, or in the near future as he's relatively young and is still pretty fresh in his role.

For a guy outside the organization, JD is probably the best case.

Already knows the landscape, well respected and he won't come in guns blazing and try to turn this team into a contender right away.

Kinda want someone new to the Rangers though.

JD is nice, but not new to the franchise.

Get fresh blood in.

And undoubtedly whoever they hire will be based on how on-board they are with rebuilding and where the team is currently.

Ot but Mullin is the worst, I dont even wanna imagine how bad this team is gonna be without ponds next year

Who are respected longtime NHL execs who should be considered? I have no interest in hiring JD, nostalgia hires should be last thing Rangers should be doing.
