If Slats stays on as an advisor to Dolan, won’t he likely select his replacement?
That is what I figured would happen . Dolan has to lean on somebody . According to Sportsnet last night the Sens have gotten /or are getting direction from the league to help choose a President for them . Many have turned down the offer including Yzerman . Why would anyone want to be in that Ottawa organization unless they had no other avenue to pursue . I hope we can land JD . Maybe that is why Columbus went all in...either win it all or go broke and move on elsewhere ....??? Maybe JD had this already presented to him before he gave his blessing to JK's moves as CLB GM for the trades at the deadline ?

Before Gorton was promoted to GM, Sather was President and GM. Maybe Gorton becomes President and GM. Eventually Gorton passes the GM duties to Drury.

Honestly, that is what I see happening eventually. May take a few years though.

Unless something dramatic happens, I really don't think Gorton is stepping away from a GM role.

He's 50 years old and is four years into a gig he's waited a long time to get. His entire strategy right now is all about the long-game.

The odds of Drury eventually becoming GM of this team are actually pretty slim. I think he'll apprentice here for a while, but it's not like he's doing so under a Sather or Schoenfeld - aka guys who have more road behind them than ahead of them in this sport.

If by some chance the Rangers don't think things are working with Gorton, or want to make a philosophical change, I think the odds are more likely they go for something very different, not necessarily a guy who gained most of his experience assisting the guy they just fired.

No need to rush into a seasoned hockey expert. Let Gorts continue as is and in the time frame of 3 years reevaluate our progress. If it is not acceptable do a clean sweep. Get rid of Gorts Drury and Quinn then hire your president and he hires GM etc.

JD just signed an extension less than a year ago.

Me too, no interest in an outside hire coming in and trying to throw a wrench into Gorton’s plans.

Agreed for the most part, but the next big boss - no matter who that is, is going to need to address the scouting sooner rather than later. Its been quite a while since the Rangers have hit a home run in the draft, and I don't think that's much of an accident.

Can’t fault the scouting staff with so few picks. Pulling Buch and the Duke out of the 3rd is pretty impressive. Lias and Fil are solid for the talent in ‘17, ‘18 looks well above average. I expect even better in June.

I don't even know what is wrong with their prospect scouting. Their average starting pick for a 4 year span was like #60

I never disliked Sather, My main criticism, there never seemed to be a cohesive plan where the whole roster had a good chance to be firing on all cylinders all at the same time, and throwing big contracts at it never should have been seen as the solution. Yet post salary cap the results to a point where there, and it was for the most part pretty entertaining. Pre cap it was pretty poor.

I throw this name out there with tongue partially/largely in cheek, but if Messier is gonna get a mention, then... why not Mike Richter? Besides the deep familiarity with the game and Ranger brand tattooed on his butt, he has a tremendous intellect, charismatic personality, and has been at the helm of his own metro-area business since his playing days ended.

End of an era, thankfully.

When you add up his tenure here it's significantly more negative than positive.

'00-'04, its lasting effects and that feeling that at any moment we might re-embark on Mr. Sathers Wild Ride to crazy town still looms pretty large for some of us (those that are old enough to really remember it, anyway) but I would say "significantly more negative than positive" is probably a stretch. Pre-05 lockout was purely and horrifically negative while post-05 lockout was mostly positive.

"If I had the Rangers payroll, I'd never lose a game"

While this quote pretty neatly sums up Slats cigar chomping arrogance, I am also pretty sure if the mid-80s Oilers had the Rangers payroll they would come as close as possible to winning every game.

What has JD ever done? He is a great guy. He loves the Rangers. His teams haven’t won anything. He helped rebuild the Blues. He left after the new owner didn’t want to pay JD and Armstrong. The Blues haven’t had much success and there are players from the JD era still there. JD has been in Columbus since the fall of 2012. They have not won a playoff series. I am not putting the blame on him but his teams haven’t had much success. Facts are facts. He has been running two teams since 20o6. It’s not an easy job but I don’t why he would be such a great choice.
