I doubt they’ll promote him over Gorton. That would be awkward on a number of levels and Drury hasn’t necessarily built up that kind of cache in his career to this point.

Not sure Graves is that guy either.

From an internal standpoint, I think Gorton has good odds.

I also wouldn’t totally rule out Schoenfeld as a candidate either.

I guess, but they just gave him control of Hartford recently though (past year or so), no?

Meaning Gorton becomes president and Drury becomes GM

Or Gorton becomes president and stays GM but Drury gets more GM responsibilities

Listen as long as Dolan doesn’t start getting involved if Slats leaves, I’m good

One of the THN guys had a long interview with Gorton for a whole big thing about their rebuild and according to Gorton the decision to rebuild was reached by meeting with Sather and Dolan multiple times throughout last season where they’d sit down and go “do we have the pieces it takes to win?” And every time they all came up with a “no.” So while not an every day decision maker, he (and Dolan for that matter) are part of setting the course still

In talking to a few friends with knowledge of the situation, they give a lot of credit to Sather as a facilitator the last few seasons.

I don’t want to say he was training everyone to communicate with one another, but I get the sense he was asking good questions and really setting a tone where people laid out their thought process. “Why aren’t we considering this guy?”, “What’s the disconnect here?” and questions of that nature.

I think that’s one of the big reasons they get unprecedented buy-in to not just pursue this course of action, but to do so in such a public fashion.

I think Drury could see increasing responsibility, but I also think the Rangers want to see him get Hartford firing on all cylinders first.

When push comes to shove, neither Gorton nor Drury have a ton of time served in their current roles, and both have a lot of unfinished business in said roles. While Gorton could become president, I don’t see him relinquishing GM duties.

That's how I'm going to start responding to traditional holiday greetings, non-traditional holiday pleasantries and happy birthday wishes. "Merry Christmas!" "This is not news, Christmas has been scheduled for December 25th, 2019 A.D, first reported by Jesus thousands of years ago"

I hope they make a minor hire from the outside, someone with a different background. Sather wasn't doing much of the day to day so this shouldn't have much impact going forward. Give Drury some more responsibilities and keep him happy for the time being.

I'd like to see Gorton get the dual role with Bobrov getting increased responsiblities. Gordie loves to scout. Let him focus on that.

It does not has to be anyone with a hockey background. There are plenty of presidents of NHL teams without a hockey background. They could just as well give it to Steve Mills or bring in someone from the outside.

Not sure how to feel about this one. If he leaves I’d rather they promote from within

Maybe Gorton gets a promotion and Drury gets more responsibility?

If Sather got Dolan to buy into this course of action, the I have to think that any replacement will have to also be on board with this course of action.

I would venture a guess that this would be a significant part of the conversation with any candidate for the job.

Slats is unique from a bygone era. He lent 1 million in bail money while he was GM President of NYR to the ex owner of the Oilers. Dolan probably loved him unconditionally after that!! My guess it stays in house.

What does a team president even do? What has Sather done the last 4 years as just president? Trevor Linden and Brian Burke were president of their teams. Both of them are no longer in those positions. The Canucks and Flames didn't replace them. Brian Benning and Brad Treliving run the hockey operations.

Sather was thinking about stepping down last summer. He agreed to stay for more one year through 18-19. The Rangers issued the letter. The Rangers rebuild is on course. Full steam ahead. Sather's work is done.

Gorton needs to be the ultimate power broker running the hockey operation. Nobody else above him. He is the architect of the rebuild. It's his baby.

You can't bring in someone from the outside who wasn't part of the decision to rebuild to oversee Gorton and the hockey department.

There was actually a LeBrun article in the Athletic a couple days ago about Ralph Krueger potentially being willing to return to hockey as a team president (he's currently chairman of the Southampton Football Club in the English Premier League). Could be a decent hire

The return of Messier. Or at least he's the one guy no one's mentioned who might be interested.

What experience does Messier have? None.

In 2011, Sather elevated Gorton to AGM. Not Messier.

in 2014, Messier left the organization after the Rangers didn't want to hire as head coach.

In 2015, the Bruins wanted to hire Gorton as their GM. The Rangers said no. Later that summer, Sather stepped down as GM and elevated Gorton to GM. Sather didn't pick Messier to replace him.

Messier is going to be hired as team president to oversee and evaluate Gorton's job? No.

Listen--I'm not saying it would be a great idea because I don't but almost every time there is an opening his name gets mentioned and FWIW Chris Drury doesn't have a whole lot of experience either.

Sather’s looked considerably older these last couple of years.

While 76 isn’t what it used to be, and most people Sather’s age look like 60-something year olds from 30 years ago, this kind of work is still a tall order when you hit those higher numbered birthdays.

Slats also had the surgeey to manage prostate cancer like 5 years ago now. Let him focus on his health and family at this point. He’s already in the Hall of Fame. Slats has had a great life, and I’ll miss that cigar-chewing fossil
