Is Connor McDavid running the Oilers?

Dustin Schwartz must be running it. It’s the only explanation that he’s been able to keep his goalie coaching job through like 4 coaches, a bunch of goalies and the same awful results through all. Jesus, they need to clean house in this organization.

My most memorable moments of McDavid are him giving his team the stink eye. Now this is only observation I could be wrong but from what I've seen he is the most demotivational captain in a very long time.

But Connor always looks like that, more or less. Does he seem like the kind of person that inspires?

I think McDavid really really cares about winning. I think he carries a massive weight on his shoulders.

He can't be everything to everyone. He's the best player on the planet surrounded by mediocrity and has that Canadian humbleness affliction, and he's not going to get rid of that.

But I don't think he's a lifeless robot personality to the extent of say a Phaneuf or Tavares.

Maybe Crosby like?

Not sure. I just think it's hard to rip on the best hockey player who's stuck on a shit team (sorry to say that, but it's true and yes the Leafs also suck)

It’s just sad because you knew in 2015 that this is where we’d end up.

It is one of the biggest joke organizations in sports and their fans deserve so much better. On par with the Knicks except they never had a player like 97.

I knew I wasn't the only one saying exactly this - way back in 2015, we knew. We knew they'd screw it all up.

Any team in any other sport would kill to have the draft lottery luck the Oilers have had, and for them to basically fritter it all away because they think they're smarter than everyone else in the room no doubt stings.

The 30 for 30 on it all once McDrai bounce should be interesting.

Don't see how that's different than any other captain. People tend to forget or are too young, when Crosby came into the league he was touted as the next 99.

And his team had success.

Not just him.

McDavid isn't getting that.

There's a difference there I think.

Yet I think they have similar personalities. But McDavid is probably tired of the situation he's in, and will blame himself for it, but it's probably not his fault.

Crosby elevated some very average players. Leadership is highly underrated in team sport.

I think McDavid is just absolutely sick of the incompetence of Oilers management. I don't think he's a bad leader or ruining the team or anything. But he is rather stoic.

Looking into his career is like staring into the alternative universe where Pittsburgh never got their shit together and we're still a mess after getting Fleury/Malkin/Crosby/Letang

I don't know about that.

A lot of teams suck and perpetually suck and are poorly managed.

Every Canadian based team sucks and will continue to suck.

Heck even the Bruins kinda suck if you think about it. They sucked for a long long time, then they won a cup, and have been scary good since..............

But they haven't won another cup since.

It's like Tampa or Vegas the past 5 years right?

Not exactly historically "sexy" teams if you get what I'm saying.

But I was told it's all Bettman's fault that Canadian based teams suck. How else could all of Canada's teams be poorly managed? :sarcasm:

Frank Seravalli: “Unless the wheels absolutely fall off in Edmonton… I don’t think there’s any way Connor McDavid’s leaving”

Most USA based teams are poorly managed too.

I guess you could say that the NHL isn't exactly thriving right now.

You could say that about most sports teams, period. Most are content to coast because they want to stretch that "butts in seats no matter what we do" dollar as long as possible.

See...that's what happens when you have ownership that includes a guy like Lemieux....not one of their former groupies.

I think Peter Forsberg becoming Peter Forsberg had something to do with that (not to mention the hindsight of Lindros' health.)
That’s kind of the point. Forsberg was a highly touted prospect himself, plus Quebec got Ricci, Hextall, Duchesne, Huffman, Simon, two first round picks, and cash. The ‘93 first rounder turned into Jocelyn Thibault who was the main piece used to land Patrick Roy. The ‘94 pick was used in the big Clarke/Sundin trade which later led to the Clarke/Lemieux/Thomas three-way trade. Moral of the story, trading McDavid could be a blessing.

And it could also be Jimmy Carson, Martin Gelinas, Martin Ruccinsky, Jason Miller, and Nick Stajduhar. There is nothing in this team's recent history to suggest that they can turn magic beans into a golden goose.

Would you rather lose him for nothing in a couple years? And if he stays, what part of Oilers management leads you to think that they’ll properly build around him? They’re better off not trying to cater to him. That road only ever leads to disaster.

I don't think that was the question.

And as for catering to star players, I'd say that more often than not, it leads to retaining them.

Did the players want to get the coach changed? Maybe.
Did their play influence the coach change? Yes.

Not sure if McD had anything to do with this, but if he wanted, he could get involved in the coaching and management politics without much issue. He is that influencial that management has to listen to his opinions and players understand that he is the one that brings the food to the table.

Yes he is...Are you looking for employment ? Would you like to submit an application to him for review ?
