Is Connor McDavid running the Oilers?

Short answer : Yes
Long answer : Ownership and management are trying to do whatever they can with him in mind to ease the upcoming contract negotiations. He ultimately gets a say in anything that happens

its not the question of "IF" its the question of "When"

He was a Penguins fan.

So yea, when Dubas brings in McDavid you're gonna feel real burned.

I don't get the sense that he had anything to do with these hirings. He seemed legitimately pissed off that Woodcroft got the axe. I don't think he asked for any of these things and I would go as far as saying it's patronizing if they're doing it to keep him.

He clearly just wants to win, and Holland/Chiarelli have failed him. I don't know if you can salvage their situation and retool at this point. I feel bad for him and Oilers fans. Just a shitty situation all around.

Within the last several months, the Oilers have made some interesting moves.

1. Hiring Connor's agent as CEO of the Oilers

2. Signing Connor's Junior linemate in free agency

3. Hiring Connor's Junior coach as head coach

With these things in mind, do you think McDavid is actually the one currently running the Oilers? Or do you think these moves are all desperate attempts to get Connor to re sign with the team in a few years?
If he is running the Oilers he is doing a horrible job

I keep saying this.

I don't get the hate from, what I assume, are Oilers fans for this guy? He's a generational talent that's put up 53 points overall in the last 2 playoffs.

53.

Unless you're simply sticking with the narrative that he's pulling all the strings, all the trades are run by him, that he signed off on both Nurse's and Campbell's contracts and he's the one designing systems and plays for the team.

Otherwise, FIFTY-THREE points! Honestly, unless he was capable of playing goal as well what possibly more can anyone ask for? Oh, the "play better defensively" argument? He was also +14 the past two post-seasons.

His playoff career at ES, goals for vs goals against:
12-10
6-5
4-6
34-21
11-12

He’s had one year where he clearly won his ES match-ups, the rest of the time he’s getting 60+% offensive zone starts to go even against the other team’s shutdown 2/3C. That means the bulk of the rest of the shifts are the other team’s top line starting in the Oiler’s zone against whichever of McDavid’s Jr buddies are playing in their bottom 6 that year.

If McDavid’s going even against shutdown units and the rest of the team has to deal with the top lines, the only way they win is if they win the special teams battle by a big margin.

He needs to start backchecking, and cut the diving and tantrums out. You can't hold the rest of the team accountable when the guy wearing the C refuses to play like a man. The team sorely needs a coach with the balls to tell him that he either embraces a team game or he can sit in the press box. No one is questioning his talent, but he clearly has some serious character issues that need to be addressed.

I've been thinking for a while that McDavid is gonna be the NHL's first modern NBA-style superstar. He's gonna pick his own adventure—for now, I think it's basically taking over the Oilers and getting what he wants out of them until his contract's up. Once it is, I think his agent will get him a nice one-year gig with her other client, that dude in Toronto. And the next summer when both of their contracts are up...

I think stuff like this is gonna start to happen.

"I could feel that a little bit. It’s fun. It’s fun to play in Toronto. You know, obviously, I’m a little bit biased. I’m a Toronto kid. But I strongly consider Toronto to be kind of the Mecca of hockey. I really do. Just with all the media and the fans and, obviously, the history of the Leafs...And I’m probably going to get in trouble for saying this (chuckles) but I like watching the Leafs just with all the talent they have..."

:sarcasm:

In all seriousness, McDavid will probably head to NY or LA if he doesn't stay.

At the very least he’s probably consulted and maybe adds more influence than usual. At the end of the day he’s not the one making the decisions or running the team.

There may be some big names purposely trying not to win, to force changes. Seen that with other teams late in the season to improve draft position, but rarely this early. Even if this is the case, they have other big problems whose origins started well before this skid.

If McDavid ever happy about anything?

Didn't he pose for a photo with some random people at an airport and they were absolutely beaming with smiles and McDavid was.......wait.

I'm sure he's a good guy. He really needs to get the hell out of there though. I'm not even hating on the Oilers, it just doesn't seem like it's gonna work out. I think he's had one foot out the door for a while.

He probably will go to a US market. "grow the game" it's in everyone's best interest type of thing.

My most memorable moments of McDavid are him giving his team the stink eye. Now this is only observation I could be wrong but from what I've seen he is the most demotivational captain in a very long time.
He wasn't on draft (lottery) day. Remember when that picture of him looking so glum became a meme?
But Connor always looks like that, more or less. Does he seem like the kind of person that inspires?
