McD SHOULD shut up. We don't want anyone in the league knowing Staal has an eye injury. He could be targeted; and we don't want that.

See this guy gets it. Let the players have at it with the press, no reason to be quiet about what's going on with the team. Maybe McD can confirm or deny that Nash is injured too.

do people really think every hockey player in league doesn't know Staal has an eye injury?

Seriously. Horrific accidents like what happened to Staal (and even Fraser last night as well) tend to circulate around the league because it affects everybody. That can happen to anyone not wearing a visor any given night. Staal's eye injury and how it was caused is not a secret to anybody, so the whole "shuuuushh, no injury talk!" thing is a little overblown in this case.

If it's a guy like Clowe who went down for largely unclear reasons and Mac said something about his condition, that's way different.

If Staal has such little confidence in his ability after his injury that he has to pull himself out of the game, is that really something he wants to be advertised in the media? I'm sure that was not easy for him.

If Staal wants to open up to the media about it, that's fine, but it's not up to another player to do it for him.

Link? I heard it's an upper-body injury and he's just a little banged up.

He's suffering from Robert De Niro.

I really feel bad for Staal. Anyone who's played sports and been hurt doing it knows the hardest thing for an athlete to do is say "I can't go tonight".

I think that's the issue Torts probably had with Mac's comment. Let Staal be the one who says how he feels and why he makes the decisions he does.

This nails it far more than the "don't let people know about his eye injury" reasoning. You don't talk about a player's own decision to play or not play when it was made behind closed doors. Obviously McD didn't have nefarious intentions, nor was it egregious enough to make a big deal out of it, and Torts didn't.

McD goofed by talking about another player's injury with the media and was mildly chastised for it. End of story, world keeps on spinning.

Sick Clowe on him. Kid's big and nasty, but he's still a kid. Clowe could settle him down a bit, methinks.

Exactly what I said in the main boards thread. Clowe had a talking to Oleksy last night, and he was very quiet for the rest of the game. Clowe would settle Wilson down real quick.

I didn't see the opening or around it, anyone have video? Would love to see Clowe do this. He's a big scary man

Is Torts in the CIA now? Or is he waiting for his coaching career to end? I can't tell.

Yup. It's awful. That's what really has me concerned.

Must be worse than it's made out to be, especially since it's during a playoff round... Don't know how exactly to put it into words but knowing some of the pain I've played through and some of the pain I know professional athletes play through it really takes a lot to say you can't play, especially when it comes to the playoffs. I mean, some people play through torn labrums/muscles... (Yes I know it's not exactly the same thing as an eye injury but it just shows how far these guys go to be out there if they can.)

Just thinking out loud here but what if it was not the eye that he was uncomfortable with. He took a really big hit in the corner in the begining of the game. Dare i say what if he started getting head aches the following day. MCD's comments might be to throw everyone off that he was not comfortable with his eye and maybe he has another concussion! I mean he did not skate at all today at practice, he could have at least went out for a conditioning skate with the eye issue.

This was what immediately came to mind for me as well.

I've thought about this too, but I immediately rejected the idea just because I don't want it to be true :(

I talked to my dad at about 915 last night. I was on my way home to watch the game on DVR. He told me that Staal pulled himself out. So it was somewhat common knowledge before McD made his comment.
