If it's not Jack Campbell who should be the Leafs new #1 goalie?

The f*** are you on about? We made him and offer, apparently his agent didn’t like that it was heavily front loaded making jack highly tradeable in the later years, jacked the price way up. If anything, we’re sorry your joke of agent got bent out of shape over something stupid and basically stopped negotiating with us costing everyone the opportunity to find common ground for a deal.

Long and the short of it though, Campbell isn’t worth what he’s about to be paid.
The long and short of it is that Campbell is the best goalie available to us right now and all the other options we are looking at currently are a downgrade, we didnt make it over the hump last season, we really think we're going to this season if we downgrade in goal?

Dubas was way to cocky and confident he could find another goalie to replace Campbell and just left him in the dust, there was one initial offer and nothing until last week when he said he would speak again.

He low balled him (yes its how negotiations work) but still starting offer lower than Mrazek? Thats just rude offered 2.75 when one of the worst goalies around was getting paid higher than you last season to sit on the shelf.

Either way time will tell neither of us have a time machine but i see us kicking ourselves in the a** for not signing Campbell and making that a priority, the market is terrible and even Gibson said he has no interest coming here so its looking pretty bad for the Leafs right now.

Rumours are that Edmonton is signing Campbell but again, lets see wednesday, regardless we look like we're about to be caught with our pants down.

Naw we definitely told Campbell goodbye by offering 2.75M or whatever it was

Petr Mrazek got 3.8M from us despite being terrible this year.

We should have given a 4M x 3 or 4 year offer if we were actually looking to keep Campbell.

He's a 4M or so goalie. 2.75M is asking him to take a discount for no real reason

Up until his final 2 starts (where he was playing injured), his save percentage was .920 behind a tire fire D. He gave up 13 goals on 53 shots in his last 2 games of the season.

So no, there is more logic to it than that.
So are you thinking Murray is going to be the #1?

Mrazek had also played very few games the year before. It's not like he was an all star. So yeah it was a slap in the face

It’s pretty debatable that Campbell was any more than a 3M goalie when the season began last year. And Mrazek, unlike Campbell had a lengthy career of respectable results going into his UFA

I think our biggest issue RE: Goaltending is that the current organizational philosophy is that we want a tandem but we also don't want to spend a lot on it.

That's why we were offering Jack 2.75 mil..

In the 4 years of dubas we've gone

Freddy and trash (5.8)
Freddy and hutch/half szn of jack (6.2ish high end)
Freddy and jack 6.8
Petr and Jack 5.6
And tried to go 6.5 when we offered jack 2.7

We're obviously capping ourselves at a number which is why you can't go with a tandem because that number is so low you're ending up with 2 mediocre goalies unless you strike gold

My reading of the Leafs situation is they don’t value or particularly care to get in the weeds re: goaltending, and see available options like the draft board, that is interchangeable plug and play ranked in superficial tiers tied to contract value and general ballpark track record.

They went from a classic $5 million workhorse starter they weren’t happy with, downgraded to a $1.6 million journeyman backup and saw regular season drop and nearly took out Vasilevskiy. Then saw validation in what Colorado did by winning with Kuemper (ignore for a second that Colorado is a better high octane defense and Kuemper is at least at Campbell’s level).

Feels like a real Moneyball gambit. Which by extension feels unnecessary because we’re inefficient in other positions. Do we really need Brodie at $5 million instead of a real starting goalie? Or Muzzin at $5.6 million? Kerfoot at $3.5 million? I’ll leave Tavares alone since that one is pretty obvious.

I just know we're gonna end up with a decent tandem. And all this whining will go away haha Dubas just needs to grab a guy like Halak on day #1, and then he has a reliable vet backup. Then go chasing whoever you want. Varlamov, Samsonov, Murray, Allen, Hill, Blackwood.. whoever. I have faith whoever our new starter is, will at least give us the same quality goaltending we got from Jack. Murray bounces back to form and Dubas is going to look like a genius. But I'm excited to see what our crease looks like come October

Would you stay for 1/2 million less and 2 fewer years?

He'd most likely give us.a discount but it sounds like we're not valuing him

Loyalty goes both ways. We offered him 2.75 with a horseshit 3rd year. There's a real possibility our cap hit for Murray is over 3. How does that make sense
Oh for sure the whole evaluation of Soup and Mrazek - just way off. And that's why we're here

This article is from Maple Leafs Hot Stove. It appears that acquiring Murray could be the worst Leafs move since they signed Eddie Balfour to replace Curtis Joseph.

This is very interesting, thanks for sharing. I know most people here are calling Murray a joke and so on but I have to say, I'm feeling a lot better about him having read this.

Lou has to be willing to trade him, and apparently that's not the case at the moment.
Lou will trade him if he gets the right offer , he’s not going to give him away and he sees how thin the ufa goalie market is so he’s playing it smart by saying he’ll keep him with the hopes someone gets desperate and overpays .

Is Halak even available?

I do not want Samsonov at all. His high danger underlyings are garbage. Caps could have easily upset Florida in round 1 if they trusted Vanecek instead.

I'd ask San Jose if they wanna move Adin Hill instead of Reimer, maybe pair him with Murray. Worst case Halak shouldn't make more than 1M.

Caps defence was spotty all year. If you can get him as 1a/1b, it's worth the risk, especially since he is young enough to make significant gains in development.
