How much rope does DJ Smith have? [UPDATE: None]

Andlauer and Staios kind of guy?

They seem to really like DJ, going against the entire fanbase by keeping him on this long.

I am not sure they have a kind of guy. Appropriately for the Senators they have no NHL experience at all, let alone experience in identifying talent.
Staios doesn't have NHL experience?

This biggest factor is coaching and holding those forwards accountable.

Who lost ice last night? No wonder Brady and Timmy like this guy
How to you have forwards lose icetime when they all deserve to lose icetime?

Brady missed a couple shifts after the 4th goal,
JBD had a big gap between shifts in the 2nd, I'm guessing but I suspect it was after he allowed the breakaway.

In the end, I think a new voice is what will drive a change, I just think it's too easy to blame the coach, the players are responsible for their decision making, Chychrun changing when Carolina has two guys behind the next guy and we don't have possession isn't something that any coach is telling guys to do, that's on him and him alone
Fair, some mistakes aren't on the coach.

But it is amazing when everyone is on the same page and the defense is clicking, those mistakes become mitigated.

People are more willing to listen to how to fix their mistakes when the team is winning.

I know I am preaching to the choir but familiarity breeds contempt. The players may not say it but I bet most of them are waiting for a new coach and a chance to feel refreshed and learn more. (We all know what Tkachuk thinks)

It reminds me of when Blake Wheeler would not stop telling the media that Paul Maurice was the only coach he would play for, because he liked him so much. Well, Maurice left on his own and after a year of adjusting and playing they have become the top Canadian team imo.

Staios doesn't have NHL experience?
Staios was a special advisor to the Oiler's hockey operations staff last year but other than that no experience. Also, that job sounds made up.

In 2016, he assumed the role of President and General Manager of the Hamilton Bulldogs, who won the OHL’s Championship in 2018 and 2022. Staios won the Jim Gregory Award, awarded annually to the Ontario Hockey League General Manager of the Year, for the 2021-2022 Season.[9]

So he has good hockey experience but really nothing at the NHL.

Man doesn't StLouis know that a coaching change will cause instability, and that the team might fall into the dark void of a blackhole causing the rest of the planet to fall into this intense gravity, losing all light, all life and spacetime with it?

You could have made a drinking game with the no-look passes during the 2nd period. It was horrible. Zero puck management.
On the other side of the coin there were many players holding onto the puck for too long because they had absolutely no idea where there teammates would be. Zero chemistry. At that level, players should know where to look for their outlets and that was non-existent last night.

All of that is coaching.

I thought it was after he got hit in the head, and came back to the game with a full cage on. Might have gone through concussion protocol, as he looked dazed, and hammer was trying to get him to sit down.

You could be right, I was just looking at icetime logs.

It starts with making an example of someone in the core group of players. If that doesn't send the message then pick someone else in the core the next game. Repeat if necessary.

There have been no shortage of guilty parties among our core over the DJ years yet he has never even tried cutting their ice-time. It's insane.

Many high level athletes have strong sociopath tendencies. If they never get called on their misdeeds/bullshit play they will rationalize their behaviour and just keep doing what they're doing. Or get even worse.

We should've gotten a new coach two years ago, but.....why the hell aren't the players holding themselves accountable here? Why are they continuing to make stupid and lazy decisions over and over and over again? Changing the coach won't magically changes the neural pathways in their brains to make smarter choices on the ice.

We may have talent, but we also have crappy hockey IQ and desire to work hard enough (and smart enough) to win on a consistent basis.

To play devil's advocate, the players have just gone through a change in puck management tactics. They've been told to hold onto the puck longer, not throw it away. I think this is what's caused them to try to pull the puck through defenders' feet, toe drag, and no-look pass to nobody in the corner. I imagine Staios/Martin/Smith look at last night's loss as an adjustment.

Feel bad for DJ. I just don't think he has enough tools to fully coach to his capabilities. He needs more support before the team decides to fire him.

Get him a new goalie coach, new assistants, new players, new gum, new iPads, another senior advisor to watch over Jacques Martin.

I think the angry fans are bringing the team down. It is proven that negative Nellies can create poor defensive play.

Chychrun has been a disaster defensively

Imagine that, a D has been forced to play his offside and somehow seems to have issues, especially defensively. Never fails to amaze (or amuse) me how people say "just move him to the other side" without much of a clue of how it tends to negatively impact a players game, especially D men.

Eventually this logjam at LHD has to be resolved, and that can likely only be done with the loss/trading of two of Chabot, Sanderson, Chychrun, Brannstrom and Kleven, take your pick.

He’s been playing the left side, the most.

Yea DJ is always full of positivity that's why guys will go through the wall for him. Gotta keep those type of guys in the organization. I'd sign DJ long term.

I am not laying last night's loss to Carolina at the feet of DJ .. Its obvious he has been working to make adjustments and some improvements have been noticeable. Carolina, ,much like when Florida came in and out played us. Canes are very good defensively and the Sens beyond their good start could not execute. Certain players were definitely off their best and the Sens need them to be better to win games. Our special teams were not close to good enough.

On the season however there has to be concern focused at our record at this point in the season which is soon to be lost to making the playoffs again. Some of that is roster construction and depth and some has to point to coaching. The changes resulting in improvements we have seen should have been before this year and likely before last year. We should be disappointed. Next 5 games on the road and the Sens can't take any one lightly for shifts or entire periods. I don't know what the answer is or if there is an answer to what can get us on a winning streak to make the playoffs. Maybe we have to settle for improvement and more consistency. It would be nice to see what a change in coaches could do. I think there are quality people available and the process should begin.
