We aren't getting a new coach until a new GM.

This has basically turned into another wasted or "developmental" year. Doubt they are expecting playoffs from this bunch. But at least we now have Martin and Alfredsson.

If DJ being fired was solely based on his performance and results, he would already have been kicked out some weeks into the season.
They are clearly waiting for a new GM and they want him to be a part of the coaching decision simply in order to prevent any internal difficulties in the future. This is a logical thing to do and I can fully understand it.

However, there is a point where keeping DJ would arguably do more damage to the organization than firing him without a new GM being hired. If the number of visitors goes down and the team is getting booed by Sens fans while core players seem to not evolve into the right direction, management simply has to act in order to prevent further and long lasting damage.

I think people really need to align their expectations and views with that of ownership/management. Otherwise, they'll drive themselves crazy every game:

1. This team is not on the cusp of anything
2. The Pierre Dorion rebuild can be deemed a failure
3. There's no urgency to make any changes right now because nobody in hockey outside of the people on this forum thinks this team is one or two changes away from being any good

Heading into the offseason, I expect everyone to start hearing things like "reset," "patience," and "sustainability" from Staios and whoever the new GM and coach are.

The diehards on Twitter will be up and arms (and you can't blame them; it's been years), but the casuals have all already tuned out, so I doubt there'll be a huge hit at the box office beyond where we're at now.

The players can say whatever about them "believing in this group", but it's clear as day that this group, as a whole, sucks.

9-13-1 through 23 games last year for 19 points.
11-12-0 through 23 games this year for 22 points.

It is what it is.

Agree
A rebuild is inevitable imo too
They are simply not good
All the metrics in the world don't win Cups
All that matters is the 2 points
That's it
They are just not good at getting points that's it

You guys should listen to Doug Armstrong’s presser. When he explained why he made the change he said he didn’t like what he was seeing and it sounded like he was describing the Sens.

Wow, our performance in the 2nd period at home is really our only consistently negative score differential accrual.

If Andlauer still wants a chance at that sweet playoff revenue he needs to force Staios to fire DJ and go after Berube, worry about GM hiring later,

I keep reading people say that org wants to have a GM in place before they hire the next coach… but the timeline for that to happen doesn’t work.

Many of the candidates that we'll want to interview are, more likely than not, currently employed by other teams (Darche, Tulsky, etc). Some of those teams will win a round or two in the playoffs, which means that the interview process, in a best-case scenario, won't wrap up until late May.

But even if it happens sooner, if we choose to hire someone who’s under contract with another org (let’s say Darche), that person wouldn’t be able to start with the Sens until after the draft (standard practice).

Which is where the trouble arises.

In the off-season, coaches are typically hired and fired in June, before the draft.

I mean, you almost certainly want a coach in place before the trade and free-agency season begins, since the philosophy and style you want to play needs to be a major input in deciding how to construct your roster.

It'd be one thing if DJ was under contract going into next year and the new GM had him as the status quo and could take time into the season to make a decision... but that won't be the case. His contract ends after this season.

So the reality is, whether it's tomorrow or June, Staios will be the one who decides on the next coach. Not the new GM.

I think DJ is still around because they honestly like DJ. I don't, but they do. I won't be shocked if we woke up one day to the words "DJ," "signs," and "extension" all in one sentence.

Go get Dean Evason. Him with Jacques Martin and we'll be the best defensive team in the league.

And the last time we had a Terminator looking mother f***er as a coach, we went to the ECF.
