Canucks & NHL News, Rumours, and & Fantasy GM | 4 Nations Break Edition

I wonder if we get any extensions announced over this break - O’Connor, maybe Boeser if the Canucks finish evaluating him?

Lankinen will be too busy to sign one, but an opportunity for the Canucks’ front office to get some work done.

They are going to evaluate Boeser straight to Columbus if he doesn't come down from 8x8.

I bet O'Connor gets done though, do we have a projected contract for him?

Do we stand a decent chance of catching LAK for 3rd in the pacific?!

Depends. We really need a top six winger to be impactful. Not to mention, Pettersson needs to find his scoring touch again if we're going to chase LA.

OConnor - 3x2.25
Lankinen 4x3.75
Boeser 6x7.25 or traded

Make us proud Allvin/Castonguay and co!

At this point, there is almost zero chance Boeser gets traded regardless of how contract talks go. We're not getting someone back for a rental that will help us make a playoff push now. It's more or less telling the roster we've decided to punt on the season. Which doesn't seem like the M.O given we got Marcus.

The only way I see Boeser taking less than 8M is with an 8 year term to offset the loss. Basically, he helps us with a lower cap hit, but we guarantee him what would essentially be a retirement contract. Even then, I still see that number being closer to (or at) 8M.

So aside from speed what is the appeal with norris right now and his risk?

Do we want 2 centers now with significant injury risk?

Does anyone know if JJ Peterka is effective at centre in this league, or is he purely a winger? I remember him being drafted as a centre, but does he suck there at the NHL level? I think he's the perfect Tocchet player from everything I've seen and read about him.

Either way, I do wonder what the price for him would be. Might be too expensive.

He's also going to need a new contract. Any estimations for the money he'd demand?

I have no issue moving on from Boeser if we have a plan B in the chamber. He’s just not dynamic enough
Managements track record in free agency is pretty good. I'm willing to trade boeser for futures at the TDL and let them weaponize the cap space and use it again in free agency for an upgrade on what boeser would have asked for anyway. Ehlers, mantha and drouin come to mind.

He’d be a big addition to the PP, but the injury risk is an issue, and not a small one considering the fragility of our other top centres.

If the rumours are true that Ottawa has been trying to trade him all season (or longer) , you’d think the cost would be pretty low. If Boeser won’t sign an extension the team can live with and you can swap him for Norris (either directly or through a third team) it’s a consideration I guess.

I’d rather target Evans and just roll the dice that Chytil can elevate his game.

Another thing worth mentioning is management's track record on re-signing players (and contracts as a whole.)

I can't really think of and instance where they've re-signed a player and it's been a bad deal. I think I've often been surprised when the details come out on how good it is. The most recent example, Marcus Pettersson and some of the wild numbers thrown around.

My point is, if they ultimately do re-sign Boeser, it's probably going to follow that trend.

(I'm sure some replies will point out a deal I've forgotten about, like the elephant in the room, expensive Pettersson but at the time of signing i don't think anyone was complaining.)

I’m coming around to the idea that of the buy-low top 6 options out there, Trevor Zegras represents the best fit. I’ve never been a big fan of the player in so far as serving as a core piece that you build a team on. But as a complementary guy on the second line, playing behind a true 1C, he could flourish in such a role. Plus, he adds some much needed skill and creativity to our line up. His defensive shortcomings are also a bit overblown due to his undeserved hype early on and the backlash it inspired. A medium level risk due to his 5.8M salary for the next 2 years and good chance he could be had for a good price - a 1st and a prospect/Hoglander or Raty.

He's also apparently Hughes bestie, but yes I would assume the cost would be low of the basis on the injury risk etc. He's a nice player, but having him and Chytil in the line-up presents issues.

I primarily agree with the last sentence unless something else pops up.

I can live with one player chytil with risk but dont like having 2 centers

I know its a what else is out there type of situation on centers (i dont want zegras) but i also dont thing we would acquire someone with so much term because 'what else is there'

I still think there's the possibility Boeser is traded if they can't come to terms and then is immediately replaced in a somewhat lateral move. Like Boeser out, and then right away they announce a trade for Rakell (or whoever). That's not punting the season. It's directly replacing Boeser's spot with someone who's cost controlled for a few years.

If Carolina wants to trade Rantanen at the deadline, I wonder if Boeser + 1st gets it done...

Why would they trade him when they got him for the playoff run? No way we're trading a first for a rental.

Yeah I agree. I would rather use Boeser's cap space and our own available space and bring in 2 or 3 players, such as the guys you mentioned and gamble that will be a better route than signing Boeser to a big contract. There are a handful of players through UFA or even trade that could easily work out way better and also change the dynamic of the team. Boeser is good at goalscoring but slow and often invisible for long periods.

Oh yeah I also want to say how much I detest the 4 Nations Crap Cup. No real hockey for 2 weeks. Football is over. Basketball left. Uggggg.

These are both debatable but Boeser and Kuzmenko. Kuzmenko’s turned out to be a bad deal while Boeser’s was very divided at the time and looked terrible in his first season.

Man, do I feel for Quinn Hughes right now, I think it says everything that he has not spoken out to media about his decision not to play yet in the 4 Nations yet. He is a "hockey nerd" and wants to play versus the best and with his brother and friends. I am selfish and was hoping he would opt out as he needs rest, as the first 50 games he carried the Canucks to a playoff spot and the emotional turmoil had to weigh on him. A 3 week rest (including the last week when he did not play), he is going to come back refreshed and lead the Canucks to a great last 27 games!!
