If he's back by this weekend I think he'll get there. That gives him four games, one of which is vs. Detroit, who are happy to assist anyone this season when it comes to breaking records or generating highlights. He’s listed as day to day. Would be a real bummer if he stays out and misses out on 60 goals.
I hope he gets it this season, but it will likely be his only one.
This is only the 2nd season he's going to play more than 70 games in his 6 seasons, and 60 goals is hard enough when you play a full 82.
And that's not a slight on Matthews. The guy may be the best forward in the NHL right now.
Is it really "barely" when he's on a 68 goal pace over 82 games? His inability to play 82 games is probably one of his main obstacles however. The answer to this question is, it depends on if this scoring increase lasts.
Not to diminish what he’s doing, but he’s on pace to barely break 60 and this is the highest scoring year in long time.
It would be outstanding to have a player hit 60 or even 70 goals in this era and Matthews is likely the only one who could do it. But yes, dealing with Leaf fans after that would be worse than it already is.Really, really, don't like the Leafs... but still want him to hit 60.
As a Leafs fan I think Matthews scoring 60 is way more memorable and important than the playoffs this year. With our goaltending we're not winning the cup anyway this year, but if Matthews scores 60, nobody can take that away from us!If there is any kind of lingering injury do the Leafs risk matthews in a meaningless late season game or hold him out until the real tournament starts?
