“The Boston Red Sox and Houston Astros have expressed interest in free agent shortstop Trevor Story, reports MLB Network’s Jon Heyman in his latest insider piece for Audacy’s “Big Time Baseball” podcast. Heyman reiterates that he’s also heard Seattle convey interest in the shortstop, as MLBTR covered prior to the lockout last week. As is the case with all player-team connections made in the lockout age, no talks can take place between either party until the lockout is lifted.

Interestingly, Boston was recently cited as a team who reached out to free agent shortstop Carlos Correa‘s camp. The path to that connection being anything more than due diligence lies in moving All-Star Xander Bogaerts off the position, an option neither the player nor Boston front office have indicated is on the table. The takeaway from a potential Correa pursuit is in many ways identical to a hypothetical Story one— sign an All-Star shortstop to guard against a Bogaerts departure, improving infield defense in the interim.

Just like Boagaerts, Story has yet to give a firm indication that he’ll be anything but a shortstop heading into the 2022 season. As we saw with Boston’s recent reacquisition of Jackie Bradley Jr. however, the Red Sox clearly aren’t afraid of shuffling players around if it means upgrading their defense. Even on the heels of a modest-for-him campaign, metrics across the board agree that Story would be an improvement with the glove over the incumbent Bogaerts. Of course, with Seattle allegedly showing interest in Story as a third baseman it’s possible Boston can do the same, choosing instead to move Rafael Devers (a subpar defender in his own right) off his position for a presumed upgrade in Story.”

Ramos indicates that Bogey has told the Sox he’s willing to move if the Sox sign a player like Correa or Baez (before Baez signed with Detroit).

Translation:

"Credible sources confirm to me that Boston is seriously interested in the services of Carlos Correa. My sources are telling me that Xander Bogaerts would be open to moving to second base if #DirtyWater signs Correa or another premier shortstop like Javier Baez."

Hell baby
@CDJ

Who’d you want from the Yankees again

hahaha people in the major league phase which will be post lockout, but I saw that they trolled them once again in the minor league phase with a possible MLB bullpen depth arm. Keller is interesting. He lost the zone this year but if we turn him around he’s gonna be a reliever in the bigs IMO. Not too dissimilar from the Ort pick last year

Boston Red Sox select pitchers Austin Lambright, Brian Keller in minor-league Rule 5 draft
Austin Lambright
Lambright, 27, was Kansas City’s 10th-round pick in 2018 out of the University of Central Oklahoma. He made 16 appearances at rookie ball that year, then posted a strong 2.85 ERA and recorded 74 strikeouts in 47 ⅓ innings split between Single-A and High-A in 2019. He did not pitch in 2020 (minor-league season canceled) or 2021 (injury) and is now 27. In May, FanGraphs’ Eric Longenhagen called Lambright one of the Royals’ “sleeper prospects” he reached 95 mph in 2019 and had “relief potential.”

Lambright is especially dangerous against left-handed hitters, as he held them to an .065 average (3-for-46) in 2019. Command seems to be an issue, as he has issued 52 walks in 69 ⅔ minor-league innings.

Lambright is a Washington native who underwent Tommy John surgery while in college at Abilene Christian before transferring. His twin brother, Brandon, was drafted by Colorado in 2017.

Brian Keller
Keller, also 27, reached Triple-A in 2021, posting a 2.77 ERA in 55 ⅓ innings for Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. A 39th-round pick out of the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee in 2016, Keller owns a career 3.16 ERA while striking out 449 batters in 441 ⅓ innings in the Yankees’ system. He has pitched as both a starter and reliever throughout his career.

Notably, the Red Sox have had recent success poaching pitchers from the Yankees in the Rule 5 draft. Garrett Whitlock, who was Boston’s best reliever in 2021, was selected in the big-league portion a year ago. Righties Kaleb Ort (2020) and Raynel Espinal (2019), who both reached the majors last year, were taken from New York in the minor-league phase.
No Sox minor leaguers were selected.
