Post-Game Talk: Hot Garbage, Leafs Lose 3-2 In OT

Bright side is Tavares is looking dangerous again

If we can rolling two top lines and tho stifling, shutdown/checking. lines, we have as good a shot as any to win the Cup. Assuming our D plays to potential.

Foligno is going to add what he does on any line. Nash is going go contribute as well and he shouldn't be overlooked.

A zero sum centre on the 4th line is going to nullify one of the opposition top lines Leafs will face in the postseason. That's a huge advantage.

The PP and OT was obviously terrible, but let’s not forget Simmond’s multiple 2-on-1s where he just skated forward past the goal line

In my healthy playoff lineup, neither he or Thornton make the cut. Sadly, both of them will be in it. Just hoping Keefe can play them like 4th liners instead of higher up.

Only veteran forward on our team that has produced well is Spezza.

Let's talk about our PP

Let's talk about Simmonds, Engvall, Thornton.......... They have been trash

Mikaheyev was garbage tonight with JT

You can't win playoff series with these types of players
But Pierre is so tall and has such a long neck and can skate like no one else and has a long wingspan ..... what are you talking about ..........;)

They have to start resting some guys. Holl, Muzzin and Thornton all look like they've just finished running a marathon out there.

Enough with the excuses... Thornton doesn't belong on this team... Holl is just fine, Muzzin.. well... he might be playing banged up 'he is tough as nails' but if someone is actually that badly hurt, they would have rest days... in this case, nobody isn't resting.. aka, stop with the excuses. ;)

Thornton and Simmonds are a waste of roster spots.

Thornton was his usual useless self but Simmonds was a special kind of bad tonight. Two botched 2 on 1s that didn't register a pass or a shot, turnovers and botched passes (giving and receiving) galore, and wasn't his usual crash and bang self.

Frustrates me to no end to on plays where he has a chance to get the puck deep but he tries to be fancy and ends up turning it over, but that's not exclusive to this game. He better come out flying on Thursday or he can sit with Thornton when the playoffs start.

Well that explains why he sat tonight.....

This game is why a heavy forecheck and taking the body works well late season into the playoffs. Our D are starting to slow down a lot. And it doesn't take skill either but none of the top six do so with frequency.

Both Muzz and Holl were hot garbage in the B2B games.

There are some micro problems (PP, lack of rush chances, Rielly gaffes) but the biggest problem is that we are easy to scout and predict what we do.
It allies opposing coaches to easily dissect us and put in game plans.

This is the biggest factor that does not bode well for the playoffs.
Weird teams stopped scouting us for 10 games then started again.

Sure, and a lot of them are getting called out. Making sure these two dont get missed.
Seems like they fatigue easier than the rest of our team. Wonder if it's skating related, Muzzin is just slow and Holl is a bit of a laboured skater even if speed isn't an issue

It's saveable if Rielly has a proper gap to step up, he doesn't. It's saveable if his gap allows him to play it like a 2on1, he's too flat footed.

He shouldn't be in that spot. When he is, he should have played it better. Matthews shouldn't have been forced to backcheck there, but he was and needed to do it better. Marner wasn't directly involved in the defensive lapses, just made a horrific decision to shoot giving up possession and leading to the goal against.

None of these mistakes excuse the other.
Rielly's job here isn't to have a tight gap though - the forwards are the forecheckers, he's there for insurance if someone gets through.

For Rielly to have a tight gap here, before the forwards both gamble, he would have had to be up with them near centre ice, which is terribly risky, just asking for a breakaway against. One guy has to be back playing it safe, and it's the dman.

Before the forwards both gamble, all 3 Leafs are in good position - this is not a dangerous rush at all if the forwards play it remotely reasonably. In this situation one of Matthews/Marner can pressure the puck carrier, but the other one must stay back - they totally bif that by both pressuring the puck. In that half second the play goes from "the 3 of us are in great position to defend the rush" to "potential 2-on-1". But even then, Matthews still could have saved it by simply back-checking hard, but he was lazy in a crucial moment.

Blaming Rielly here is blaming him for not pulling out some magic to save boneheaded plays by the forwards. The real issue is the boneheaded plays by the forwards. You want him to have a tight gap here ... that means him being up in the neutral zone during the Flames breakout, which is just

playoff lines

Marner - Matthews - Gally
Hyman - Tavares - Nylander
Mik - Foligno - Simmons
Thornton - Kerfoot - Spezza

Nash and Robertson would be next up

Agreed, that has to be the most boring game I have watched all season! brutal... I would hate to be a flames fan, BORRRRING hockey Sutter, BORING!

The Habs were worse. That is the type of team you can't enjoy having to watch every night.
