Post-Game Talk: Hot Garbage, Leafs Lose 3-2 In OT

Now that I've gotten my gripes out of the way, it was really nice to see Tavares have another really solid game. I'm glad his efforts have been rewarded in points. It'll be nice to have Nylander back with him and maybe even see Foligno with them as well.

Rittich is an upgrade over Hutchinson. He kept it to two goals against and allowed the Leafs the chance to get a point and even win it in overtime. He's not responsible for what transpired in overtime, goal certainly wasn't his fault.

I'm so used to the Leafs winning every game, it's weird seeing them lose back to back games. I don't use fatigue as an excuse for their loss, but damn, they've played a lot of hockey recently.

I really hope their powerplay funk is shaken off soon. They dominated on it the first two months, it's so strange to see how it went from 40% in January, 25% in February (which is still good) to like 2-3% over the last two months almost. Is it Malhotra's fault? It'd be understandable if there were one or two players that have been stagnant on the powerplay, but no player has been good for the last 36 opportunities.

They have to get that together soon.

Anyway, an OT loss isn't really that big of a deal. Winnipeg lost last night, we still gained a point on them and Edmonton.

Get it together, Leafs. I know they will.

Matthews should have stayed with Johnny. He made a similar lazy play against McDavid few weeks ago

He can't be so non chalant there
The forward is supposed to attack the puck carrier in Keefe's system whereas Rielly should have been covering Gaudreau. One guy is caught being lazy whereas the other simply not understanding his duties... which is worse? Even if they run something different 3v3 like man to man, Rielly should be all over Gaudreau and the bulk of the fault would be on Matthews.

He doesn't take back ice in the neutral zone to get a decent gap. Because of that's he's flat footed and out of position. He's out of position for a 2on2 and a 2on1. He can't pressure the puck carrier, can't contain him or take away a dangerous lane - and that's just with the puck carrier. It doesn't even include the wide open lane he leaves for Gaudreau and the fact he can't even back pressure when he's beat because he's flat footed once it turns into a 2on1.

It's not all on him, but he doesn't do anything right on that play.
Perhaps if a certain center had taken his man instead of coasting and doing what, a lazy stick check?

No, I am not acting like we we're blown out. the team didn't gel all night like they have always done... fumbling the puck, stupid turnover passes... flames we're clogging the neutral zone all night, you think Keefe would have resorted to dump and chase, but no no... Keefe is to blame the last two games... but the team as a whole is also to blame. I am ok with an off night, but two in a row? come on. Unacceptable with the amount of talent we have on this team.

This team has looked like the Toronto Maple Leafs in Game 5 vs CBJ.

There are some micro problems (PP, lack of rush chances, Rielly gaffes) but the biggest problem is that we are easy to scout and predict what we do.
It allies opposing coaches to easily dissect us and put in game plans.

This is the biggest factor that does not bode well for the playoffs.

After the failed gamble by Matthews/Marner, Rielly moves to pressure the puck carrier (Lindholm), which is the right call - Matthews should still have been able to stick with Gaudreau. When Matthews inexplicably doesn't stick with Gaudreau, Rielly is forced to back off Lindholm and try to stop the pass, because there's no way he catches Gaudreau at that point.

It's already a bad situation the moment both Matthews and Marner gamble in the neutral zone, but it was saveable by Rielly taking Lindholm and Matthews taking Gaudreau. Only one of those happened. That's not on Rielly. He makes plenty of mistakes, but this wasn't one of them, the OT gaffes were all Matthews/Marner.

Another game where the Leafs were outplayed and deserved to lose.

Looking around the league though, lots of shitty teams are beating up on top teams. Carolina losing to Detroit, Tampa getting blown out by Nashville.

Calgary still believes they can make it so obviously you get their best.

The loss doesn't really bother me though as we know what they are. All I want before the playoffs is for them to figure out the god damn terrible PP and be healthy.

At least the team was able to garner one point from Rittich's debut in the blue and white. Done with Calgary for the season now.

The PP and OT was obviously terrible, but let’s not forget Simmond’s multiple 2-on-1s where he just skated forward past the goal line
I only saw the 4 minute PP .... Marner threw an obvious pass that was blocked.. he then picked up the puck cocked it back like he was gonna fire a wrist shot and drifted into the slot until everyone got back into position and the play was broken up.

Does Marner ever just make a simple pass? Not every play needs to be made off his own stick.

Punch Imlach once started a practice with a question, he said you guys stunk the joint out last night, and by all rights I should bag skate you, but I feel pretty generous today. So I'm gonna ask you men one question and if anyone can answer it they get excused today. You men play in the NHL which is an honour and a priviledge, so I expect at least some of you should know the answer. Everyone ready, there are 6 spots you never ever make a drop pass. After a bunch of shit's and groans, Eddie Shack turns and starts skating back to the gate. Imlach yells across the ice, "Shack where the hell do you think you're going? Eddie grins and say's "well Coach, I know where those spots are" You do, do you, Ok smartass where are they?

Shack lets out a bellow and say's Montreal, Toronto, New York, Boston Detroit and Chicago, enjoy the practice
I don't actually mind the drop pass because they're consistently entering the zone and retaining possession but their decisions there are baffling and their execution awful. Little to no player movement, or usage of space behind the net, shooters passing up shots, passers hogging up shots, just a mess all around that seems to have been influenced by Matthews not having his usual shot for a prolonged period of time.

It's saveable if Rielly has a proper gap to step up, he doesn't. It's saveable if his gap allows him to play it like a 2on1, he's too flat footed. If he's in the right spot, he can jam up the pass, but doesn't. Instead he's behind and isn't best by the puck carrier because of Matthews (bad) back pressure that takes away the middle

He shouldn't be in that spot. When he is, he should have played it better. Matthews shouldn't have been forced to backcheck there, but he was and needed to do it better. Marner wasn't directly involved in the defensive lapses, just made a horrific decision to shoot giving up possession and leading to the goal against.

None of these mistakes excuse the other.

They all screw it up, that was my first comment on the play.

Every single one of them botched it.
And I disagree. That was Auston's guy. Rielly played his man. Auston went for a skate.
I dont think Rielly had a super strong game and clearly his confidence is shaken but that goal was on Auston.
This was 3 on 3 hockey, you leave your guy open and its game over.

LOL wut? WTF should he have been doing then? Playing Parcheesi?

Rielly, Matthews and Marner all made terrible plays in OT

Worst game by Matthews in awhile in whats been a great season for him

PP is unspeakably awful, I don't want to think about it anymore. I just want to crawl in a closet when we get a man advantage. It's hurting me emotionally.

I miss Willy
You can find your Willy anytime you know .
