McIlrath isn’t coming back. Love extending Ness and tapping him as captain (on AHL only contract).

congrats Captain!

Random note from Puckpedia: Riley Sutter is going to be a Group 6 UFA after the season. (Unless signed to an extension of course.)

Have no idea how much that will matter to the Bears. Long ways away, relatively.

I’m sure Bears/Caps will try to resign him. But at this point, he is probably a call-up at best. If he finds a better path to NHL maybe he goes for it. But don’t think that will bother the caps a whole lot. Finding a 14-16F is easy. And that is what he is.

This is his 6th year in Hershey. I’m sure the player will want to move on next year if he thinks he has a better shot elsewhere. He’s also on track to reach exempt vet status, barring any injuries this year, so that diminishes his value a little bit if he does return.

My guess would be that he moves on next year unless he’s told he has a strong chance at taking over Dowd’s spot next year.

Feels to me like Rybinski would have the inside track on 4C over Sutter. Would you agree or disagree with that?

FWIW, I see a number of Hershey forwards potentially pursuing greener pastures this upcoming offseason including Limoges and Sgarbossa (two-way UFAs) and Vecchione (AHL deal). I also suspect HHA will head back to Europe unless he finds another organization that gets him closer to the NHL.

Absolutely. Rybinski’s rise the last 6-8 months can’t be ignored. He’s showed a lot of promise. Love his game.

Limoges and Sgarbossa are AHL guys at this point. It all depends on how they play the rest of the year and whether or not they want to try to pursue some more money overseas.

Agree with all of this. We had a transition period where there just weren’t a lot of people graduating to the NHL either because the skill was lacking or they couldn’t unseat the incumbent vets. That is changing now but we aren’t going to replace with 25-28 year olds. I think that is part of the rationale in being comfortable letting Beck Malenstyn go at 27.

Frankly, I thought we would be a bit younger in Hershey this year. And we are to some extent because Miro, Rybinski, and Trineyev are early 20’s and on the cusp on NHL. We have college and junior players who look like they can move up the ranks.

Sgarbosa and Vecchione will stay in Hershey as long as we give them contracts. Hershey is a great place to be for those guys. And Sgarbossa got an extended look in NHL last year. McIlrath this year. But a bunch of those other 25-28 year old will likely see writing on the wall.

Veccs seems to have really embraced being a Bear (he invented the Roar, after all), wears a letter, and has been on an AHL deal the past couple years anyway, so I imagine he'll be a Bear as long as he wants to.

Sgarbs has been here forever and has a young family... I imagine he'll be in the same boat as Vecchione, though he's still on an NHL deal this year of course.

Limo has local ties (VA native and Penn State guy) but he's also young enough that he can be making money elsewhere if he wants.

HHA will almost definitely be back in Sweden... I think he would've been this year if not for his coming out party in the playoffs.

I have to imagine this is Shep's last year in Hershey. I'm not sure if he figures into Washington's future plans at all (he's almost 30), but I imagine they'll want to prioritize Stevenson and Gibson (if they decide to keep him around) in Hershey going forward and Shep will probably want a shot somewhere else if not in DC.

Pretty accurate here. Only thing I really see differently is that I think Washington/Hershey will make the younger goaltenders push Shepherd out before they let him go.

So far Shepherd has been the better goalie and hasn’t lost yet. Mud hurt.

Shepherd has been the best goalie in the AHL for a couple of years now, but he just doesn’t look like an NHL goalie. If we see that, so does other scouting staffs.

We have too many goalie prospects to have a long term veteran goalie. Fine at forward and Dee because we lack prospect depth. I suspect those conversations are happening and Caps may try to do him a solid and move him to NHL team for a 7th or future considerations if opportunity presents itself. Otherwise, he probably knows its time to move on for both sides.

Lol I'm pretty sure I spent the last two years trying to convince you that Shepherd wasn't an NHL goalie. I get it, I just don't think and organization like Hershey who expects to win a championship every season let's their star AHL goalie walk unless they have a better option no matter how much Washington wants their young goalies to play. Hershey (and usually Washington) is a earn it type of organization. That's the development philosophy here.

You did and i listened! :)

And i agree with you on Hershey prioritizing a winning culture, but i do think the Bears/Caps will treat this situation differently because the talent is there to backfill and win.

That's fair. I don't want to see him go myself, lol. But I have to imagine he's going to want a real NHL shot next year. I'm not sure what the Caps have planned- I thought this was the year he graduated until they traded for Thompson at the draft.

Bears looked tired today after three in three days but they pulled it out. Goals from Miro and Franky. Tough to go three in three and win them all. Hell of an effort this weekend!

Yeah, I watched this game. They did look tired. Both goals were nice.

Loved seeing Iorio in there at end. Plus nice assist today as well. Good to see him growing and getting important minutes.

Yeah he's really looked like a more mature confident player this year. The assist on the goal yesterday was really slick. Key for him will be staying healthy and playing with confidence all year. If he does I think he's 3RD next season if this progress continues.

Over who? TVR? Or are you assuming JC6 leaves? Everyone else is under contract.

Iorio is maybe the 9th (10th?) d-man right now. I cannot see him moving up to the top 6 unless something major happens to the group above him.

TVR looks good as 3RD. But he is overpaid for that role. I suspect we keep TVR if we are competitive. I think Iorio can certainly be 4 and if we need to move TVR we can. But for now i like him as 4RD for 2025-6.

But this all started because he might be breaking through as someone who is an impact player. He doesn’t need to be top 4 Dee. But 1D might be open soon.

He goes in over TVR who will be 34 going into camp next season in his final year making 3m as a #6. Iorio is 9th the same way Miro is the 15th(16th?) forward. It doesn't do him any good to sit in DC. We all know Miro is superior to Vrana, Milano and Sgarbossa just like we all(should, if we've been watching him play?) know Iorio is superior to McIlrath and Alexeyev.

Not liking the 3 goalie kind of rotation with Shep, Stevenson and Gibson. I know Shep is now a career AHL'er and they want to keep him for the Calder Cup runs, but at the same time Gibson/Stevenson need to develop at the AHL level. With an 82 game schedule a 3 goalie rotation can work at the AHL level, but now that it's 72 games, I don't think it's such a good idea going forward.

I'm pretty sure Stevenson is injured. They started the year with a Shepard/Stevenson rotation. Clay has not played since October 19.
