I don't even think fitness is a problem with Kopitar. He simply didn't shoot the puck this year, at all pretty much.

If Kopitar had put about 50 more shots on net over the year he probably would have had about Seven/Ten more goals.

Not sure I can agree with you when it looks like Kopitar is skating in cement for about half the games this season. That, and Lombardi has criticized his level of fitness in the past.

Kopitar definitely needs to find a quicker 1st step this off season.

It is time for some new blood on the roster though. Dean does a critical self evaluation at the end of every season. These players are going to be treated more like commodities from now on.

I'll believe it when I see it. I am still almost 10 months later shocked by what didn't happen last off-season, so it wouldn't surprise me to see any of these guys everyone wants gone brought back.

You know I had my doubts and I ate crow and DL deserves a ton of credit for what he has built but he also deserves a ton of blame for where the team sits right now, especially in regards to the cap.

Just some thoughts.

The fact is the team is barely missing the playoffs, if they do. A lot of monkey wrenches popped up this year:
- Voynov's drama
- Pearson missing half the season
- Minor injuries to Gabby, Kopi, Toffoli, AMart
- Losing a buttload of shootouts
- And of course, referee Ian Walsh bonehead early whistle

If any of those, or some other things I'm forgetting, don't happen then we'd be playoff bound right now. Hell, if even just Voynov's situation didn't happen our D would've been better most of the season, Doughty wouldn't be so tired, and we'd have at least a couple more points.

So the team, for all its problems, is still a good team and a few tweaks and a bit of good fortune away from being a SC contender again.

There are two things that alarm me
#1 Dean's kept some serious baggage he should've let lose like Greene and Richards.
#2 The team overall really does seem to give inconsistent effort. Losing doesn't bother me nearly as much as lack of effort does. Some other teams have hit adversity this year and answered the call better than our team has. Maybe the team has bought too much into the idea they can turn it on whenever they feel like and it's finally come back to bite them?

I agree with everything you said except for the bold. Your #6 defensmen is never "serious" baggage, and the only reason he has been a problem at all this year is because Voynov's a twunt.

Ok forget St. Louis. Was just throwing teams out that play a physical style like LA. Chicago has played just as many playoff games than the Kings. Blame it on their core being changed but like I said, no one put a knife to Lombardi's throat and told him to keep Richards this summer or to re-sign Greene

Chicago botched their offer sheets, lost core pieces of their team and had to fire their GM before they won their second cup. Jesus Christ, perspective people.

I don't even have a problem with Greene being back, My problem was the four year contract.

Greene had just come off a two season injury riddled suck fest. He played well for the playoffs, But that shouldn't have netted him a four year contract.

A one year ? Sure. if he didn't take it, then best of luck to him. O well, if Lombardi wants to move him, he can. Greene is not a serious problem for the Kings, far from it.

Bottom line is the Kings are tired and parts of their core have been used up. Richards, Williams, & Brown specifically. That's the price of success people. Now, it's Dean's time of the year. Let's see what magic he can concoct to re-vitalize this championship machine.

It's hard to blame Greene, he should be watching most games from the pressbox but it's understandable for fans to be bitter, especially when McNabb finally comes around after 60 or so games and is scratched so Matt Greene stays in the lineup.

The fact is, the Kings should have moved on from #2 and #10 last offseason and instead Dean basically committed 10 years and $45m to them for sentimental reasons.

DL re-signed Greene because he couldn't re-sign Mitchell. If Mitchell re-signed, I guarantee Greene would have been gone.

IF we do indeed get in (still a HUGE if), it would be an honor to do you guys a favor and take out Anaheim. I want Byfuglien to clock Getzlaf and Perry on every god damn shift.

I'm okay with this.

Fair enough. But would you agree with Greene being a carry-on at least? :D

Herby, you know I agree with you on this one. The problem is we don't look at some of these guys like they are our sons.

A buy out for Richards was a no brainer when you consider the risk/reward of that situation. Richards had been trending in the wrong direction for well over a year.

If I was Dean, Williams, Stoll, and Richards would all be gone and I would think about shopping Greene and bringing Regehr back on a 2 year deal max. I would give Weal a shot on the RW, and go out and get a #3 center even if it means trading some depth from the defense. Also, gotta re-sign Sekera. That guy would be a solid addition and he plays the kind of game where he could easily play well for 5 more seasons.

No contract extension for Kopitar this off season until we know which direction he is trending.

Ugh, is Karlsson winning another Norris Trophy a thing? Jeez, I won't hear the end of it. Karlsson being better than Doughty will be a discussion again, especially with the Kings missing the playoffs.

Kopitar's agent will advise Kopitar to not sign one anyway. Too many factors going against him this off-season.

Ha. The guy should be playing 8-9 minutes against 3rd and 4th liners and blocking shots with his face on the PK. That's what he was signed for, and that's what he's good at. Unfortunately circumstances dictated he play above his pay grade and he was exposed this year. So unless you're saying Lombardi should have been clairvoyant about Voynov, it's hard to be upset about Matt Greene and anything to do with him.

It's the direction the league is heading. More offense and excitement. They are going to reward players who are risky.

I actually think Weber will win the Norris this year. My Dark horse is Roman Josi (what a stud).

You know why the Kings are in this position? Because last post season they won so many OT games and had so many improbable comebacks. Just like time travel, the odds take what they are owed and that caught up to L.A. this season.

People is a plural term, there is more than one poster on this board who feel that way. I did not include everyone in that group, I know that 90% of this board hopes they never see Richards take another shift with the Kings but you always see those posts from a few different people and it's beyond comical.

For anyone who has been around the Kings online communties for long enough it has almost reached the "Call up Flynn" level.

Flynn is available? WTH Dean!!

Well if you want to look at the bigger picture DL should have had $5.75m in added cap space to better construct his roster last season and the Kings could have had a better defense from Day 1, rather than waiting until March to be able to add the defenseman they needed. Oh and he also could have improved the center spot.

The fact is, the Kings are paying over 8M this season for arguably the worst forward and worst d-man on the roster, I don't care how good the rest of your team is, that is tough to overcome, and was completely avoidable.

I have no problem with how Lombardi kept as much of the team together as he could. They won the Cup. Twice. 3 consecutive trips to the conference final. That's as good of a result as you can get. Rewarding that based on emotion rather than cold hard logic? I can accept it.

If they go out in the 1st round this year, or miss the playoffs completely, then perception changes. Which also makes sense. Then it can't be about emotional attachment. Then the results aren't there.

Win, and you let stuff go. Lose, and then every detail is looked at. Every missed point during the season gets remembered. Like any aspect of life.
