Players just don't fight for the hell of it anymore. There has to be a reason. I don't know if Dylan would murder him but it's really not a good matchup for Will. Dylan's one of the toughest fighters in pro hockey and he is not only big and strong and can hit hard but he's also calm when he fights and very technical. He watches his opponents....he watches what he's doing. He knows what he's doing and he doesn't put himself in vulnerable positions. He likes to string out his opponents with one hand and lock them out and belt them with the other but he's also capable of switching hands. He's been doing it for a long long time. He's also okay with just beating a guy not necessarily destroying him and it's the kind of mindset that doesn't lose very often because he uses his strengths and he takes what he's given.

Who are you playing Jones over?
Jones with Schneider? Also Jones should be on pp2 over Trouba. I don't think Robertson is ready and I think at worst Jones can at least be in and out with anyone they sign to play over Harpur
There wasn't really much doubt he'd be a first round pick, so... He was a bad pick for sure, but it's not like he was expected to go in the fifth and they took him where they did.

A first round pick maybe, but I think he was end of the first maybe a 2nd rounder. Nowhere near where the NYR took him, I even remember the announcers laughing at the pick when NYR made it. It was horrible from day one

A reason why at least veteran coaches like someone like Harpur as a 6/7 D is he makes the safe play. Mikkola was a bit more risky but he skated a lot better. That said Harpur plays within his own limitations and then the size, strength, willingness to defend his teammates are other factors.

Jones is no Fox. I think if he maxes out production say in three/four years from now you're looking at maybe a 45 point defenseman. He's very good at the AHL level already but it's not like his production is tearing up the league and as far as his ability to run a power play I have no doubt he'd be a significant upgrade on Trouba but Hartford had one of the worst power plays in the AHL this year and it's not like all the pieces are so much worse than he is.

Jones certainly has the ability to push the offense.....he is riskier than Harpur and not so much into the safe play. When he is defending he is not as good in puck battles but quick in moving the puck when he gets control. He does not defend all that well in the combat areas in the corners or the front of the net. An issue for Jones is getting caught out on the ice and getting knocked around on long shifts and it happens. IMO if he's with the Rangers next year he needs a strong, steady partner and Schneider wasn't enough of that for him last year. He too is still somewhat a work in progress. They might team up better in 2023-2024 and a lot may depend on the new coaching staff to see how that plays out. Jones also needs to play so if he can't lock down the 6D it's probably back to Hartford or moving him because for one thing I think he's running out of patience with the Rangers. Harpur OTOH can handle being the 7D if necessary.

Anyway as far as Hartford's D this year Jones for the sure is the flashiest and probably the closest but Hartford's best defenseman this year IMO was Ty Emberson. He played a steady consistently good two way game from the start to finish and he's even carried it into the playoffs. The issue for him right now is being an RD with Fox, Trouba and Schneider effectively blocking him. He needs to play too and not a guy I'd want on the Rangers as a 7D. He has one more year of waiver eligibility but if he had to come up as an injury replacement I think some might be surprised at how good a player he's becoming.

Still listed on Pack roster at AHL app.
However (sorry if already noted) on Wed 5/10, BMB and Barbashev were released from their ATOs, per Transactions page at AHL app (and no longer listed on roster in the app/site)

Shame they blew game 1, tough road to get back into the series. Stinks series are still only five games this round.

Another tough loss. Hershey is big and physical and defend well in their end. Hartford is having a hard time generating shots. The Pack picked it up in the third period but they were chasing the game since early in the first when the Bears scored on the power play. Cuylle tied it but the Bears got the lead back a minute later.

Looking at the shot chart over the first two periods almost every shot Hershey took was from the circles down and between the face off dots. The Pack's shots were pretty much the same just not nearly as many. I listened to the game on the radio and Garand had to make numerous quality saves.....the first three Bears goals within 10 feet of his net.

McIlrath and Gabriel Carlsson--two veteran former 1st rounders are a really effective AHL defense pair. McIlrath was throwing heavy hits and blocking shots all game long.
