Apart from his WJC performance (where he won gold), he also won the WHL and CHL goalie of the year awards last season, beating out Sebastian Cossa (drafted 19th overall in 2021). That's no mean feat.

Going into this season, I said I wanted to see how he does in the AHL, as I feel like that is a much better rubric for goalies in terms of how they will fare at the NHL level. We've seen guys like Huska and Wall have solid careers at lower levels and then falter when they got to the AHL. We also saw how dominant Shesty was in the AHL and how much better he was than any other goalie on the team.

Garand's regular season numbers are nothing to cheer about, but he did get better/more consistent as the season progressed, and I think playing on a more regular basis is really helping him right now. Give him another year in the AHL where he is the #1 guy and let him run with it.

When Igor came over to Hartford he was already 23. He'd had several years in the KHL and was often either the backup or a guy who split time with a goalie partner. Partly that was because he was on a powerhouse KHL team.

Garand starts his rookie AHL year as a 20 year old. So there is an age and a competition level difference between Igor and Dylan when they started North American pro. I also think that the Rangers calling up Domingue for the playoffs put Dylan in a sink or swim situation and he decided to swim so kudos to him for that. That decision the Rangers made looks like it's turned into a major confidence boost for Garand and we'll see where he goes with that. If his game takes off next year I can see him getting an NHL look sometime over the course of the year. I kind of agree though he'd be better in Hartford at least for the balance of the season just so he'll get enough games.

For those watching…

Is Garand passing the eye test?

I've been listing to Wolfpack radio this year whenever I can. The Pack were getting killed by Springfield all year long. Garand was great against Springfield in both games only giving up a goal in each but the Pack dominated both games especially in the first two periods or each. Providence was a bit different. We dominated the Bruins through the first two periods of the first game but Bussi the Bruins goalie was almost unbelievable in that one. Garand pitched a shutout but he only faced 14 shots. The Pack won it 1-0 with Trivigno scoring on a pass to Pajuniemi that deflected off a Bruins skater. Garand was outstanding in the next game stopping 29 of 30 in a 2-1 win. A real goalie battle. The third game the Bruins won 6-3 with two empty netters. Garand was good but.......not good enough there. The series clincher he pitches another shutout stopping 32. Bruins had a lot of in close great chances in that one. They came very hard at him. Pack won 4-0 but that was a pretty even back and forth game.

I didn't mean to suggest that I expected Garand to have similar numbers to Shesty, just suggesting that it was very obvious that Shesty was ready for the NHL based on his play in the AHL, and we need to see more from Garand before he'll be ready. Guys like Huska and Wall never took that next step, while Garand seems to be doing just that.

Next year, his defense might look very different. We'll see how he handles it.

Hadnt noticed Gahagen sent back to Jax on thursday
He's in net tonight, Jax trail 1-2 after 1st

I would expect Emberson, Scanlin and Robertson to be back. Emberson had a really good year but being an RD he's got Fox, Trouba and Schneider in front of him. Jones is a possibility too though I think he's close and I get the feeling he's running out of patience. They'll all have that extra year of development, something of a playoff run and being one year more experienced one would think they'll all be better for it.

Rangers are thin on defense prospects though.

Jax had game tying goals in each period.
But Fla took the lead again with barely 3 mins left.
Fla wins 4-3, leads series 2-0, w 2 road wins at Jax

So do the Rangers make Garand the 3rd goalie in the system and give him the Hartford net next year or does the team bring in another veteran? Or perhaps bring in a veteran but give Garand more games? Domingue would get 2 of 3 games in a 3 game week.

Watching ahltv, scary situation here. Something very bad happened to a pack player on the bench. They ended the 1st period with about 2:40 left. Players freaking out, doctors sprinting to locker room. Hoping for the best.

I think its blidh

I saw the clock stop at 2:39 for a while, then suddenly it was the end of the period. Hope he's okay.

They cant confirm who it was but it was scary watching this live. Jake L hurried to hershey bench and whole team got on ice waving to doctors. Stretcher sprinted onto the ice and then into the hallway.

Blidh got hit hard on the boards (legal hit) but went down and got up real slow and bent over whole way to bench. I think he collapsed. Just looked like it to me
