Can Sykora please be released for the WC if they are not going to play him, just a waste when he could be playing top 9 ice time for 2 weeks straight
Keep him here. If he gets in games then great. If not, he’s still practicing, building chemistry, and going through a playoff run with his likely teammates for next year. It’s a great environment for him now and should pay dividends in his comfort level next year.

It’s very unlikely he gets into games without multiple injuries occurring. Playing a top 9 role with PK time in a tournament environment with a trusted coach in Craig Ramsey is better than practicing, and again there is no guarantee he plays in the AHL next season, could be sent down to the WHL.

Listened to the game. Possibility of a suspension to Lockwood who drilled Bruin defender Michael Callahan at the beginning of the 3rd. The Pack's announcer Alex Thomas thought it an awkward hit but Callahan was down for quite a while and was stretchered off. If Lockwood is suspended then it's likely that either Edstrom or Sykora return to the lineup.

Knoblauch deserves a promotion if Gallant is sacked...
I wouldn't go that far. I think Coach K had done an okay job in his time here but certainly nothing special that would warrant a promotion to the NHL. Really before the last dozen or so games in the regular season Hartford was a disappointment yet again. Knoblauch has earned the right to stick around another year for sure but I wouldn't want him near my NHL squad at this point.

I'm with nyr2k2. The 4 year record is pretty mediocre.

Year 1 the Pack were in first place when Shesterkin called up and the wheels fall off the wagon. But before Hartford could fall out of a playoff spot covid ended the season.

Year 2 is the covid year. I watched every game but 1. Several player usage decisions I strongly disagreed with and the Pack couldn't win the three team division.

Year 3 the Pack collapse when Brodzinski called up and miss the playoffs.

Year 4 was very mediocre until the last 14 games when the Pack go on a 12-2 streak. Yes Knoubloch gets credit but if the AHL doesn't expand the Atlantic division playoffs to 6 teams instead of 4 the Pack don't even make the playoffs.

So the team hasn't had much success and it's not like the Pack have been developing lots of prospects to help the Rangers.

I'm not in the room and maybe the players love him and he is a good teacher but the four year record doesn't scream certain success.

I agree. I’d like a coach who gets more out of the sum of the team than being reliant on parts.

Yeah I'm not trying to be super critical of Knoblauch or whatever but I haven't seen anything that says "I'm ready to coach an NHL team!" from him. If the Pack didn't load up and get hot with juuuust enough games left it's 0/4 on the playoffs for Knoblauch.

And while Hartford hasn't had star-studded rosters for him, I'm pretty comfortable saying they played below expectations the past few years.

Garand was great, but honestly thought Bussi had more tough saves to make. Team d was very good for the pack.

Garand has stopped 144 of 151 shots. Has a .117 GAA and a .954 save % and two shutouts. Apart from the one game where we gave up 4 (there were 2 empty netters against) he's been a brick wall and those are fantastic stats. Bussi was fantastic in the first two games of the series but only very good in the next two. Hartford's defending has been great. +/- might not be a favorite stat but Emberson is a +13 in 6 games. That's a ridiculous number for that stat. Hillman is a +7 in 5 games. Keep in mind that this guy has been going back and forth between the AHL and the ECHL for like five years. Jones and Kalynuk are +6. Clendening is a very good two way AHL level guy and Scanlin is big and very good defensively. Hajek's played the last two games and he fits right in at this level. It's a good group.

Hershey should be a real challenge. They have some great offensive weapons in Sgarbossa, Vecchione, first year player Ethen Frank, Anas and Snively and our old friend McIlrath is on their D. Hunter Shepard's an excellent goalie.

only hfd is these clips so haven't seen garand since world juniors other than these clips, but i'm pretty blown away by what i see here versus what i remember. not that he was bad then, but he didn't look anything like what i see in these clips.

i'm not trying to predict anything crazy, just a thought on his play. i have no idea how or if goalie play translates to the nhl. seeing him in these though, those numbers don't look like a fluke. at that level at least, he really does remind me a lot of igor - at least in how he moves around in the crease. stays very put together like igor and over the puck...but the biggest thing is how quiet and smooth his movement is. not comparing him directly or suggesting that's my projection for him. just really, really impressed at the difference between world juniors and now. would be nice if he could look like igor playing the puck too, but i don't remember seeing much of that.

He was also a 4th round pick.

ha would be nice but i have no idea how to read that translating. i'm no goalie expert, i've shot on a couple nhl'ers and a bunch of pretty high end goalies in the past. was surprised sometimes by who ended up where and that was with seeing them up close, so i can't begin to guess where he ultimately ends up. the movement in the crease though and posture just look very familiar, hopefully he's an nhl'er and stops somewhere close to as many pucks.

Apart from his WJC performance (where he won gold), he also won the WHL and CHL goalie of the year awards last season, beating out Sebastian Cossa (drafted 19th overall in 2021). That's no mean feat.

Going into this season, I said I wanted to see how he does in the AHL, as I feel like that is a much better rubric for goalies in terms of how they will fare at the NHL level. We've seen guys like Huska and Wall have solid careers at lower levels and then falter when they got to the AHL. We also saw how dominant Shesty was in the AHL and how much better he was than any other goalie on the team.

Garand's regular season numbers are nothing to cheer about, but he did get better/more consistent as the season progressed, and I think playing on a more regular basis is really helping him right now. Give him another year in the AHL where he is the #1 guy and let him run with it.

yea i think that's all more than fair, i was just trying not to say anything extreme when comparing his style to igor - completely unfair and way too early to make that statement as an expectation.

and to be clear i wasn't putting down anything he'd done or his work at the wjc, my intention was just to say he looked like a very different goaltender from there to now. at that point he looked fine, and obviously won the number 1 job over a celebrated prospect as well as gold. didn't get the best read on his play being behind a team that didn't ask all that much of him, aside from maybe the gold medal game though.

what i did see didn't wasn't anything necessarily negative, i'm not sure i can describe it well....he just looked more vulnerable there, a little more flat? not sure if thats the best word but at times looked like he gave up more net that he needed to because of how he dropped. like his upper body was lower and his pads/glove and blocker were wider pre-shot, left more holes for pucks to squeeze through. now he looks so square and keeps his hands tighter pres-shot. makes him look a lot bigger and looks much smoother moving from pt a to b to c. hope that makes sense, like i said not a goalie guy, just observed a ton of them over the years. there's a few things i've noticed, just don't know if i can explain them in a way anyone not in my brain would understand.

certainly still young and has a ton of time to continue improving. but another reason i stay away from any predictions...goalies are impossible to predict. aside from the rare prodigies there seems to be ups and downs that can continue years into their pro career before you know what you have.

I agree. Kid isn't even 21 yet. Goalies tend to develop their potential slower then skaters. Let him be the #1 going into next season and carry the momentum he's had late in the regular season/playoffs.

After next season, if he continues to play as he has, slot him in a the backup in 2024-25 and play him 25-30 games.

From there you can see what you have with him right when Shesh contract is up.

Swimming against a strong tide here but I believe Knoblaugh has been working with a shallow talent pool since he took over as the HC of Hartford.
Kris had Shesterkin for 25 to 30 games and Lindgren for 9 games his first year and Schneider for a handful of games as well.
Other then that most high Ranger prospect have gone to the big club. Schneider, Jones and Lundkvist for parts of seasons and of course the Andersson, Kravtsov and Rykov debacles.
Miller
Lindgren
Schneider
Lafrenier
Kakko
Chytil
All were with the big club either right from turning pro or shortly after.
I noticed, (being able to watch this year’s Wolf Pack games) that even at the beginning of the season the Pack was playing well in the offensive zone. Always a man at the top of the paint, another battling in the corner or behind the net and the third forward staying slightly back to support the puck battles.
The Wolf Pack’s troubles most of the year were in their own zone.
Welinski was abysmal, Robertson was trying to add offensive to his game which was affecting him with his defensive game.
The team’s fortunes seemed to turn around after Jones, Hajek Carpenter were sent down and player were added via trades .
Clendening, Blidh and Lockwood, etc…
Kris Knoblaugh has certainly paid his dues and has a knowledge of the players which might be important being only 11 million in cap space and UFA’s and RFA’s to sign which still might leave the big club with 4 starting roster spots to fill.
