Not necessarily. Montreal can take cap dump with 3 or less years left on their deal to make the money work - Especially on deals for Price, Petry and Gallagher. That would help facilitate any deal involving high cap players
It’s possible. Bad contracts are swapped for another at times. Especially when terms match up or are within a year of each other.

I don’t foresee any deals for those three where term is short on that contract coming back to Montreal.

I would keep Lehkonen, at first anyway. Home grown, good attitude, works hard, etc. Good to have him around.

Habs will have cap space if they can trade some players.
But they won’t have cap space if they can’t. Trading guys for available cap space is harder than ever. And the cap space is what has more value so the returns are meager for the player that’s moved.

2017 was the old Carey Price.

So what your saying is that Edmonton should pick him up. Not play him because then they will miss the PO, but once in, give every game and win the Cup for sure.

Those little spurts of the old Price should not tempt any GM into acquiring him, unless they are looking to get fired.

No I’m merely responding to your question about what Price did in the past 5 years. I don’t care much whether Edmonton wants him or not anyway I’m not sure why Edmonton would spend assets on a elite goaler, they got too many holes to be considered real contenders. Rather be patient with the young kids

Good now can we stop with Price to Edmonton threads
I hope Montreal don't trade Price this year. I think he needs to re-establish his career first. Next year at trade deadline be optimum time for Montreal to deal Price.

He will be healthy and year less left on his contract. Montreal also maybe in position to retain 50%. Price trade value should be considerable higher.

Allen on other hand, I would offer around league with half retained. He is average NHL starting goalie, but multiply years at 1.4 million should bring solid return.

I also would ask teams like Ottawa what they would give us to take a Murray type contract off their hands? Or Oilers offering to take on Kostinen contract?

Next year Price and Primeau goalies in Montreal.

Oilers aren't paying 1 cent to move Koskinen . He is owed less then 3 million total and each game Edmonton plays that number goes down .

I was talking about who's rumored to be available.. I don't see ANA trading JG unless it's a MASSIVE overpay
He was rumored to be available in the prior off season but the ducks play has been very good and they may be ahead on the rebuild. Yes it would be a massive overpay but wasting more prime years of mcdavid is foolish . Go for it or go home

Who cares about real money?
Only important thing is how he affects your cap hit. At his salary, Koskinen is a terrible cash/talent ratio, and nobody but a tanking team will touch that dude

I think Habs will end up with 4 first round picks in 2022.

Their own, Chiarot will bring them one. Allen 50% will bring another. I think Petry be dealt at 50% retained.

i am not a colorado fan, but i wouldn't want drouin at all. price at 7.5m for 4.5 years is a solid negative value contract.

this proposal is way off. i think you could add max retention to drouin and take out newhook and the first and colorado would still say 'no merci'.

That proposal is nonsense but it seems to me a team like The Avs would be a perfect fit for Drouin. He can play down the lineup and have no pressure. He won't be expected to be THE guy like he is in Montreal.

Just play hockey and disappear when he is off the ice.

in a cap league an overpaid bottom 6er is the opposite of a need for a contender. the avs (and all other contenders) look for cap efficient players to round out their line-up. tampa paid first rounders for coleman and goodrow and let them walk once they hit the open market for new contracts.
when drouin's current contract is up, a contender might tries to sign him on the cheap as reclamation project on a two or three year contract.

montreal is willing to retain for 3 years on the petry contract?

Real money aside, I think they would. 3 years would be the absolute max though as it comes right when they will start needing cap to sign their first round pick this year and so on (if they continue rebuilding). That’s why retaining on Petry, Toffoli, Allen, Chiarot and Drouin could all potentially make sense if the deal is right while Gallagher and Price would not make any sense at all.

Short term retention and taking on cap dump (less than 3 years terms) to facilitate a trade make the $ work cap wise should be Montreal’s goal here
