If Gagner was the Leaf prospect and Marner was the Oiler I wonder what you would say. Leaf fans are a joke. Marner was good today but looks nothing like an elite prospect in this tournament (not to say he won't be but he hasn't so far in this tournament). There are a number of 17 yr olds dominating this tournament so the age and other excuses are just excuses. Imagine if he actually was playing great the amount of bs that would be on this board. He hasn't been trash like some say but he has not played great considering all the opportunities Lowry has given him. Timashov looked far better for the first two periods then Marner i'm surprised Leaf fans didn't leave the Marner hype train and jump on his during the game that I would at least respect.

recency bias.

I was speaking as a knights fan but maybe that doesn't have any significance to the conversation.

Marner is much better than Gagner ever was. Ask any Knights fan.

This is why people need to stop putting so much weight in one tournament. People just conveniently forget about Marner's back to back 2ppg seasons and his 2ppg playoffs. Not to mention, he dominates in other tournaments as well. Appreciate the tournament for what it is and don't draw major conclusions from it.

Anyway, this whole team has been a disappointment and coaching has a large part to do with that.

Canada haven't really found their way, but they could still be really scary in a best of 1 game with everything on line. Some scary talented players still on that roster.

I don't think anyone is saying we're not scary, I'm not a fan of our results so far but even after a loss like this Finland better be ready or we'll stomp them. We're talented, but we're extremely inexperienced.

I've been saying this all tournament, last year's team was nearly perfect, they were mostly all 19-year olds, on home ice. We were really impressive. This year we have a very young team, you can tell that a vet team like Sweden were pretty comfortable in handling whatever we could muster out there. We'll see how the medal round goes. The terrible coaching is no excuse though, and the goaltending has been suspect once again.

You can't just blame the coach.

Konecny showed that you can still stand out by working your ass off.

True, but coaches are responsible for putting all players, regardless of player type, in a position to succeed.

Konecny had success because his tenacity brought chaos, and he did well creating something out of that chaos. He didn't really stand out because he performed well in the more structured play.

they are just so so so so so non cohesive tho :(

do they even practice????

at least canadian team hasn't peaked yet...just gotta play their best hockey now

or have they lol

I find it funny how so many people are ******** on Marner saying he doesn't look elite and comparing him to much lesser prospects from years past. The thing is though no he hasn't looked elite but what Canada player has, none and just because a prospect steps up in one tournament doesn't mean they are the better prospect, same as the other side of the coin. Just because a player has one bad tournament doesn't mean they are all of a sudden a bust especially at 18?

Perlini, Chartier and Quennville have been far worse

Yup. Virtanen has no points but has been involved. Those 3 have yet to do anything noticeable in a positive light.

I will acknowledge that Virtanen getting PP1 time has helped, but he's done alright at 5v5. Perlini has a fair amount (lots in first few games) of PP2 time and did nothing.

nobody is just blaming the coach... but it is a major issue. Do you realize Lowry could be the first Canadian coach to not at least make the Semi-Finals in almost 10 years. He's been atrocious, it's one thing to make line changes, it's another to completely mess up the team. He's making changes every damn period

Sweden are the favorites. Look at their depth. Have no idea why Canada sucks (bigger ice surface?) But they look disorganized and not content. Lowry seems like an incompetent coach too.

Marner has tons of skill that is obvious, I'm not gonna write him off based on a 2 week tournament with changing linemates every few games. What is more telling is the 2ppg seasons with players he plays with continuously.

He's not a superstar because they stand out no matter what is going on around them. No-one is standing out from this junior team, and I'll be surprised if they even medal to be honest. Swedes USA Russia and Finland all seem better. Of course if Canada had Mcdavid Fabbri Mccan etc they would dominate so not worried about U20 talent in the country.

Gotta hand it to the Canadian fans; Sweden is ranked #7 in attendance just behind Canada... haha. Swedes just don't care about the best sport in the world, sad really.

funny TSN and guys over here are basically kissing the Swedes feet for loving the game, for loving the WJHC lol.

Marner is not a problem on this team, should he be producing a bit more...possibly (he's also 18 and representing in his first WJHC.) Guys like Virtanen have been killing this team. Overall this team is really young. Do you realize how many 18 year olds we have on this team? This is a 19-year old tournament. Prime example last year (Canada) this year Sweden.

Canada got screwed multiple times on penalties this game. Some were warranted but so many other calls that shouldnt have been called.

Swedes play a nice disciplined game though gotta give them that.

Who said he was a superstar? He's a very good player who needs to add strength and needs maturing. This kid gets more flack than Strome, it's ridiculous.

The whole team ain't meshing, perhaps the bigger ice surface is screwing their game. Or maybe, just maybe, other teams are that much better. I knew Swedes would dominate with returning players.

stop turning this into marner thread, ya marner hasn't been amazing...yet i would say hes still been a top 5 canadian player...a ton of the boys has been horrible, how many pointless players we have, probably too many
