This is my concern, we need a coach that get the team to buy in in all situations....I'd prefer we play a little more defensive minded, a Barry Trotz type style with our offence capatalizing on our chances would be nice.

I don't know how Maurice will get the most it can out of this team.
I'm choosing to be optimistic here.... I think Maurice's systems reflect the personnel he has.

Look back at 2017-19 (ish). Buff, Trouba and Myers on the right side. We forechecked like crazy in the other team's zone and forced all kinds of turnovers up the ice. Buff was awesome at those pinches at the other team's blue line. Dominant offensive team and the forwards loved not having to play defense in their own end as much :D They were free to play aggressively up the ice. Kinda like the Habs did to us this year (credit to the Habs for being WAY more relentless at it though).

Contrast that with 2019 - 21 (ish). Buncha nobodies on defense and the system was changed to basically give up the offensive zone and rush everyone back to defend at your own blueline because we couldn't stop a cycle in own own zone if lives depended on it. Forwards had to curl back instead of attacking those 50/50 pucks up the ice.

Now, Schmidt is no Buff, but at least between him and Pionk we have two decent puck-movers back there. I'm guessing we will see a system that plays to the strengths of having one of those two guys on the ice 75% of the time.

Good post.

People shit on Maurice (sometimes justifiably) but he had to change his systems to work with the players he has.

It will be interesting to see how he tweaks thigs with the new personel available to him, both ES and on special teams.

I now wonder if the same thing that kept Heinola out of the line up last year (a system more geared towards less skilled defenders) could possibly keep booloo out of the line up this year - something tweaked more towards puck movers

Gotta admit.... if it was me, I would run a Heinola-DeMelo bottom pair for that exact reason. Puckmover on the ice 100% of the time.

Stanley as the 7th D isn't a tragedy - he'd still probably play 40-50 games a year due to injury.

Who gives a flying flip about how he is perceived?
We want playoff/ success
Pretty sure if players were complaining publicly about Maurice and it was known he is not a liked coach, then you would give a flying flip?

We did have playoff success, we won a round and went further than 23 other teams; with a mediocre defence.

For now, all things considered, probs an A. May drop during the season but there’s no logical reason not to be more optimistic going into next season. A lot of that will depend on your expectations though.

I think it is important in our market to have a players coach that players want to play for and as it turns out even advocate to other players to join on. In Winnipeg with a coach like Torts no one is waiving a NTC to come and likely 1/2 the team is asking Chevy to move them. IMO Maurice doesn’t get enough credit for his ability to treat players like they want to be treated and still have total control of the room.

There is a difference between liking your coach and respecting your coach.

We shall see just how well this team plays for him this season. He should have all the pieces he needs to play a good aggressive brand of hockey.

You don’t think Maurice is respected by his players? Schmidt went out of his way to talk about how highly respected Maurice is by players around the league in his first interview as a Jet. I’d also argue a professional athlete that plays for the team wouldn’t like a coach he didn’t respect. Maurice deserves some criticism but not having the full respect as a leader by the men under him is not one of them.

I don't know that I agree with that. I've seen far too much uninspired and lazy one dimensional play by our leaders over the last two years. If they really respect him they have a funny way of showing it on the ice sometimes.

But that is neither here nor there now. He has the second best roster he's ever had to work with for us and if he can't make it work we need to move on.

I think we can have both.

Maurice IS widely respected by players in the league - we hear this repeatedly. And what we perceive as lazy and uninspired play is quite often that - perceived.

Not here to argue, because ultimately Mo does have to produce with this 21/22 roster regardless of how he's respected in the room or around the league.

we all WANT more...but the reality is that we have a good team that competes most nights and has had playoff success.... wanting more is expected...but, you have to accept that winning the cup is hard and you can't just demand it.

This is very true , and while it is great that most players like him it shouldn’t be the criteria in which we gauge success.
Yes with 32 teams now it just got more difficult.
I believe Chevy had a very good off season and I’ll take the positive view that Maurice will have this team competing EVERY night.

2021/22 season is Maurice's make or break season. After all of Chevy's moves this summer Maurice has to put up or shut up! Maurice knows If you can't beat 'em in the alley, you can't beat 'em on the ice so he has to get the guys to score those dirty goals by putting pucks on net, so good things happen. This means Maurice has to get the players to get more traffic in front of the net while he makes sure you don't want to give up a soft goal while doing it. If Maurice fails to get his players to all give 110% and full 60 minute efforts each game then Maurice's days are numbered. That said if Maurice can get the skill guys and lunch pail crew put in Good team efforts the Jets should be a pretty good team this coming season.

I'm still trying to grapple with the fact that over 85% of HF Boards voters gave Chevy an "A" grade at anything...

Imagine if HFB gave PMO an A at anything, I’m fairly certain some would still give PMO a C or D grade if he won the cup. I’m saying that even when I’ve said many times I think it’s time to replace him…..but I have no problem giving the devil his due when it’s owed……not everyone on HFB would.

Chevy smashed it this summer, time for PMO to get this team to at least a long 2nd rd series or a 3rd rd appearance next year, then after that the team has to be thinking cup finals in the following couple years. Miss the playoffs this year or rd 1 loss you have to think PMO is let go……this team might be the best Jets 2.0 history…..maybe 2nd best after our final four team…..but it’s close.

Svech is a nice moose add with potential - Polanski is also an underrated moose addition
