Well who cares anyway. Different times, different hockey.
But I'd dare say it's maybe the biggest upset in World Championship history. A miracle if you will :sarcasm:
Yes this and Slovakia in 2002. The Slovaks had more star power but their national program was only 6-7 years old at the time.

doooo noooot caaare about what you think miracle is
It’s not about not caring. It’s about not understanding. Wouldn’t it have been an even bigger miracle if the Finns won this tournament eutntheyr U20 team?

Even that wouldn’t be as shocking as 1980 was.

Caring or not doesn’t change that.

My fellow Finns, think of all the bitter finals we've had to witness, the agonizing defeats. Now we got one of the most beautiful stories in modern hockey history; a ragtag team beat the worlds best, MÖRKÖ put the puck in everytime it mattered. This is beautiful and we did it as a TEAM!

HYVÄ SUOMI, HYVÄ LEIJONAT!

ok bro, see ya after 2 weeks

it seems "miracle" is copyrighted by americans, sorry, you aren't allowed to enjoy the victory or compare.

In reality no one gives a **** what they say - WE WON AGAINST ALL ODDS
Well, while miracles are called nonsense in most parts of the world it's still a very real thing in America :sarcasm:

Likely total salary of all finnish players is much less than 1 star of canada or russia player.
Yes and this where one could say that the Slovaks in 2002 were ahead of these 2019 Finns. They had a few star players. Where it was shocking then was that their program was in its infancy and far less cohesive and organized as the Finnish national program is today.

Hell yes, just ignore those who try to downplay this achievement. This is something very special.

@jj cale (Dear)

This is the comment in HFB I'm most proud of. Made before Mörkö did make/mace/mage/cast his spell to the history:

Yes. Mörkö shall save us!

Dear Canadians. Listen here how Mörkö is pronounced correctly by nice female voice: mörkö pronunciation: How to pronounce mörkö in Finnish

Click that play- button. :)

I'm often wrong. I often live by heart. I'm often insecure. I often just spam comments worth of nil. I often get consequences for that. I always lose my bets.

Just once, just once happened that when my rational (and always not so rational) mind said "No", my heart said yes.

This comment is dedicated to you, Dear fellow hockey fan far side of the world. :)

I think this win should motivate all the smaller hockey countries. Anything is possible, if you work hard.

Hard AND smart :thumbu:

It wasn't pretty, both teams seemed gassed from playing the previous day. Finland looked pretty lost in the first period, and seemed well on their way to a decisive loss, but they got their wind back in the 2nd while Canada seemed to lose some of theirs.

Some huge saves by Lankinen and timely goals by "Mörkö" sealed the win. Even so, Canada looked pretty dangerous to the end, but couldn't get past the goalie. Finns were just falling over on the ice at that point.

This schedule thing I've been wondering for somw years now. Why on earth do they play the last two games back-to-back? Wouldn't it be more likely to be and entertaining high energy final (or bronze medal game for that matter) if both teams had one day off before that? It's been a long season and the tournament itself takes it's toll on players.

It has nothing to do with that. This Finnish win us arguably the biggest surprise result in this tournament since Slovakia in 2002 and even if they compared it to the miracle on ice it would only be for not understanding the difference. That Slovak team was very similar in terms of unheralded players and in the teams they beat to win gold, but they too were full time pro athletes and not amateur part time students.

Do you think I’m not happy for Finland winning or something? Thst has nothing to do with understanding the difference between 1980 and this.

Miracle on ice ? Hardly. I will repeat my comments that I wrote after Finland beat Canada in the preliminary round:

The Finnish team that played Canada today had mobility, adequate size and skill to compete with anyone. When you add timely goaltending and a touch of puck luck, you have a 3 to 1 victory. The greater surprise to this observer, is that a quickly assembled Team Canada, with limited high end skill, actually played the Finnish side so evenly.
Perhaps today the Finnish team needed a little more than just 'timely goaltending' to prevail. But any team that can beat Sweden, the Russians and Canada is to be respected. They played with passion and honour and set an example for all of us as to how we should approach all facets of life: never give up. And for those who suggest that playing on the bigger ice surface would result in boring play, I would only suggest that the nine minute segment of the game in the second period that was played without a whistle, provided all of us with the finest example of what the game of hockey can and should be.

Congratulations Finland, you deserve the gold.
