What an awesome game. I have to admit that after Kaski failed that penalty shot and Canada went up 1-0 I was 90% certain we'd lose. Shame on me.

I have to say this: huge kudos to Canadians for being good losers. I mean both the posters in this forum as well as the players. For 90% of Finnish squad this was their only chance to win WHC gold, and after a helluva fight the CAN players acknowledged their defeat fair and square.

This means so much for Finland. I estimate that at least 60% of the nation watched the game. Today was also a big election day for EU parliament, and still top 15 news in both big tabloids include nothing but WHC gold related stuff. Not even a word about election results, because no one cares anymore.

Also, Jalonen is a God. I demand a statue for him.

Do you have any unused Pekkanens? Being sick is another option (you probably will be, really) :D. Or just call to your boss and explain it all already (there cannot be too many bosses in Finland that couldn't give some siima now).
No work, because I can't work atm. I have other plans for tomorrow. I need to be 9.30 at hospital.

It’s not about not caring. It’s about not understanding. Wouldn’t it have been an even bigger miracle if the Finns won this tournament eutntheyr U20 team?

Even that wouldn’t be as shocking as 1980 was.

Caring or not doesn’t change that.

Ain't this hilarious. We are not only arguing about whose prospects, teams and players are better or the best but also whose are in comparison the absolute worst!:help::laugh: HFBoards, you beautiful beast.

So, here we are arguing who have thus name rights to the usage of the term "miracle". Or which national team was blessed with the biggest miracle... Okay, fair enough, maybe we can rephrase it as to who has overachieved the most as a team and individuals.

But still, we want to
refer to a miracle, not just to something plain and ordinary like overachieving (and/or underachieving). And that is the very point. We want something to be so very exceptional it is clearly above and qualitatively/categorically different from an ordinary even if very or relatively rare event. It must be unique, incomparable, touched by god, or at least "generational" - and come from the promised land of America. We, not all of us. But some NA posters here. ;)o_O:confused::oops::DD Peace.

The media limelight is where it should be tonight. But come on, don't come pushing any political agenda here. We'll see in the turnout rates if people care and we'll see what they voted and that's that... it's completely off-topic on this forum.

I can assure you that not it wouldn’t be only North American posters who would suggest the 1980 miracle was much bigger. It would be like a university team in Finland winning this tournament. Thst would be more comparable.

None of the teams in this tournament, arguably an all star combination of the best players in this tournament would be on the level that the Soviet national team was in 1980, and conversely, none of the teams in this tournament were as unheralded in comparison to the opponent as the 1980 USA team was.

Even if Germany had won this tournament, it wouldn’t be close to what happened in 1980.

Agreed, they didn't win so who cares really. This is absolutely a miracle in my books.

How many of the rosters in 1980 were better than Team USA?

I have no political agenda to push. I simply stated it as proof of how much this victory means to Finns.

It was Miracle-on-Ice in the Finnish hockey history, and absolutely nobody can that deny if we just call it that.

Nobody believed to this team. Nobody gave good prognosis for the tournament.

And here we are.
Also in IIHF history. Even 2002 doesn't come close, they had NHL players in their team.

I would say the only rosters the USA could definitely claim to be better than in 1980 were Romania, The Netherlands and Japan.

Germany and Poland arguably at the same level. But the USA beat a couple 2-3 teams better than them at them at that tournament. The Czechs and the Finns. They tied Sweden twice and those were upsets, but for that American team to beat that Soviet team was the actual miracle. It would’ve been surprising for them to win silver, but long forgotten. It wouldn’t be a miracle if they placed 2nd in that tournament.

The Soviets won every single gold medal in the Olympics from 1964 to 1988 (beating good teams from Czechoslovokia specifically) except for 1980, and 1980 was probably the peak era of the Soviet national team. You only have to look at what that era of soviets did to a NHL all star team the year before in the challenge cup and what they did to team Canada the year after in the Canada cup to see how dominant they were at the time.

Last time Finland won gold I was in the army and people went AWOL
This time i'm on night-shift and i'm scared that the morning workers are not gonna be here on time. Can't leave work till they are here.

Congratulations to the Finns. Solid Silver for Canada although it probably stings a bit losing to an unheralded Finnish team. Swedes and Russians are shaking their heads too. Great run by these Finns.
